I don't mean to kill your guys' fun with using the term "Tossing the Salad", but it isn't exactly a loving thing you do with your SO.
Like some other people mentioned in here, it's a prsion term, Big prisoners make small prisoners eat out their ass, because if you make them suck your dick they can pretend it's a banana or something and hold on to that thought untill they finish, but when they toss the salad they know they're eating ass, lol.
Anyway, as for "Why is it a stupid name?" some of the smarter inmates use salad dressing on the guys ass to cover the taste, which is why it's called "tossing the salad".

To be honest humans come up with silly names for things all the time. We do it to make something sound nicer or just so everyone else does not know what your talking about. Take for example 69ing.
