When I Was a Kid....

Love the Thread . . .

WIWAK I remember being bummed when we broke the needle on the record player because we couldn’t afford to get a replacement for a while. Then I remember when I finally got a RCA tape player waiting hours for the radio to play a song so I could record it with the DJ talking over the beginning of the song.
WIWAK I playing king-of-the-hill at a sandy mound at an abandoned construction site around the corner and never getting questioned by the police about it when they drove by.
WIWAK I remember going to the fair and mom giving us $5.00 and tell us to meet her back at the entrance in 4 hours.
WIWAK my brother and I stayed home by ourselves after school when he was 8 and I was 6 until mom got home from work and no one saw that as child neglect.
WIWAK, we made spaceships out of cardboard boxes and had epic adventures.
WIWAK, if there wasn’t room in the car, the little kid would have to lay down in the back windshield area on car trips (no seatbelts or car seats).
WIWAK I road my bike a mile to the Pigley Wigley to buy candy, kites, soda, etc without parental supervision.
WIWAK you had to go to the movie theater to see a movie or wait until it was old and was shown on TV during the “family hour”.
WIWAK, there was no “time out”, good parenting meant you got a spanking when you did something wrong (no one counted either [1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5] to give you an opportunity to correct yourself before the spanking).

WIWAK I thought the term "gesundheit" was actually "flismtide." It took one very embarrassing incident at the age of 13 to learn otherwise.

WIWAK I tried to crack the code to Gummi Berry Juice...unfortunately I was unsuccessful...:(

WIWAK... You came home when it got dark or your mom screamed out the front door.
WIWAK... You drank out of a garden hose instead of drinking soda all day.
WIWAK... We rode our bikes all day and never checked in because it was safe.
WIWAK... If someone got chicken pocks, you were sent to their house so you could get them too. You were not vaccinated and didn't treat it as the plague.
WiWAK... You got your ass beat when you needed it, were afraid of your parents wrath if you messed up and knew consequences came with bad decisions.
WIWAK... Things were better.

WIWAK my brother and I would play with legos for hours, building towers and huge houses. :)

Nice list -- I could've written the same:)

I just wanted to thank everyone who has been adding awesome memories to this thread! When I was a kid, I didn't have to work crazy weekend hours and miss catching up with all my friends!!! Your contributions are appreciated. Thank you to everyone!!

WIWAK we played in the shade of the woods in summer. We built tree houses and buried our bottles of Coca Cola in the creek sand to keep them cool.

WIWAK bikes had banana seats on our bikes, Hand me downs were commonplace, going to a restaurant was a treat versus commonplace.

WIWAK I looked forward to my folks putting on "Animal Kingdom" because I knew that after the show, I'd get to see the reruns of the Mickey Mouse show....

WIWAK I would start finalizing my christmas list around this time of the year (with visual aids included)

Oooohhh...are we not supposed to still do this?? (hastily hides itemized list with accompanying photographs...)

WIWAK I learned how to ride my bike in bell bottoms and clogs.
WIWAK I got rollerskates for my birthday. Not rollerblades, rollerskates.
WIWAK I did not have cable tv until I was 16. I had 5 channels. Cartoons were only on Saturday mornings.
WIWAK I remember Elton John lost populatity for stating he was gay. People led protests.
WIWAK I remember the big celebration for the year 1976.
WIWAK I remember people burning bras and fighting for equal rights.

I'm right with you on a lot of these! I wore the most ridiculous red, white & blue long dress for a bicentennial celebration at school, because long skirts (like all the way to your ankle skirts) were still in fashion in the oh-so-horrible clothing 70s. :)

wwik, us kids could stand at the bus stop by ourselves. We did not have to have our parents walk us to the bus stop and stand there until the bus came like parents do today (they are justfied now because of all the weirdos trying to talk or pick up kids)

WIWAK "A Christmas Story" was not a Christmas classic...which is a shame because Ralphie's mom has it going on...:D
