Why do negroes and poor whites vote Democrat an middle & upper class vote Republican?

Great thing to point out...many forms here that ask for race say negro on them so the term is more common as you said in other places.
Most other places aren't as obsessed with pigeonholing people by skin color. Every Spanish speaking country calls people of Sub-Saharan African descent "negros," or "morenos" (literally, darkies). It's merely a descriptive, not an insult.

What are people of African descent called in say, Britain, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden , Norway, Latvia, Lithuania....?

Can't all be African American, can they?

10 to 1 they are NEGRO! (Negroid, the taxonomic classification of decendents of central Africans of dark skinned people, as versus Caucasions (as a group) of Central and Norther European areas of "white skin" or Orientals who evolved in the areas East of Africa who probably include Micronesions (dark skinned) and Melonesions (lighter skinned) and Polynesions.

No, in the UK black people are called black people. Some black people may identify as black british.

Of course racists here often use the terms 'coloureds' or negros, the latter because it is almost acceptably close to the word 'nigger'. They pretend it is acceptable to say negro, but they know it isn't.

It is usual for most lower income people in a democracy to vote for the left party and most affluent people to vote for the right party. However, if the population is heterogenous, there is a tendency for ethnicity and race to have more of an influence on voting behavior than income. In 2004, of non-union white blue collar men who voted in the U.S., 80% voted for George Bush.

Of those of all races who attended church more than once a week - as I often do - and who voted, 80% voted for George Bush. In the United States the Republican Party has become the party of the white race, and particularly of white men. Nevertheless, white urban professionals who live on both coasts usually vote Democrat, even if they make high incomes.

When education is held common, those who earn more usually vote Republican. When income is held common, those with more education usually vote Democrat. By a small margin, those with post graduate degrees usually vote Democrat. Also, by a small margin Orientals usually vote Democrat. By a larger margin Hispanics usually vote Democrat. The overwhelming majority of blacks usually vote Democrat.

BTW, I am a white, male, heterosexual, church going Democrat.

GREAT ANSWER The_Trouvere!!

Short, accurate (to my thinking) and to the point and with a complete lack of open bias! WELL DONE!

Rhumb:)

So....you gonna vote for Obama?

I was SO glad to get to the end of this thread and see a reasonable post. Thank you for demonstrating that not only do not "all blacks and poor whites" vote Democratic and "all middle and upper class vote Republican" in the US, but that there are clearly many factors that influence how Americans vote. We can look at the demographics of registered voters from both parties from many angles; ethnicity/race is only one of them.

I am a white, heterosexual, Jewish by conversion, upper-middle class female with a Masters degree. By your simplistic stereotyping, cervidaeartioda, you'd assume I typically vote Republican... but I've been a registered Democrat since the age of 18.

Not to start an arguement O2B, doesn't "Morenos" more or less translate to "those of the Moors"? We called blacks "Darkies" here too, as well as many others...the arguement could be made that "nigger" wasn't "racist" or an insult, just the "name" for "those people.

Discuss, if you wish.

Why do so many Jews vote Democrat?

Not sure of the etymology, but the Moors were from Africa. Maybe it's not just sub-saharan.

I don't think "nigger" has ever been "just a name," but I'm quite positive that in Spanish speaking countries, "negro" is just a description. They have plenty of other words for people they don't like.

maybe I'm getting sensitive. Seems a lot of people on here I quite like have started tossing around lots of racist shit, sometimes under the guise of being 'funny'. maybe I'm just too hormonal.

Sorry stu.

You think I was being racist?

"Negro" means black in Spanish. So no, it's not any more offensive than using the word black in English.

Also, I'm another educated, middle class Christian white person who's always voted Democrat.

Why do so many Jews vote Democrat?

I'm gonna take a wild ass guess O2B.

Jews did not have the most welcome acceptance in this country (better than most, but not the greatest). Many wound up in the gettos of NYC, poor, hard working and victims of predjudice (religious).

The democrat party has been very successful at selling a load of crap to those who perceive themselves as being "downtrodden". You tend to vote as your parents vote...you learn your beliefs from those closest to you. If you stop to think that the R party has for decades been the champion of the State of Isreal, it's amazing that Jews will vote for the continuation of a welfare state over the survival of the land of their ancestors.

To be honest, I'm not sure. It seems counter-intuitive to me in some ways, as many Jews are Zionists, and the Republican party has (I believe - I could be wrong) typically been a stronger supporter of Israel than the Democrat party.

However, I also think that many (not all, by any means, but many) Jews fall into the higher-income-along-with-higher-education bracket, and that group tends (as The_Trouvere pointed out) to vote more Democrat than Republican.

Many Jews (particularly those who identify as Reform and Reconstructionist) are also pretty socially progessive, which means they might identify more with the perspective of the Democrat party. I also think that some Jews might shy away from voting with the Republican party due to the strong backing of the Republican party by conservative Christians, and the ideals and goals of conservative Christian activists that are contrary to the perspectives of many Jews.

I'm just guessing at all of this. If your question was serious and you'd like a better answer, I'm sure there are others here who would be able to do a better job at answering than I am. I'll also be having dinner with my (Orthodox but very progressive) Rabbi tomorrow night, and can get his perspective if you'd like.

Which of your answers, to date, has not been a wild ass guess? I mean, really, is there a stereotype you have not paraded out here yet? Oh, wait, Asians. I'm sure you have an opinion on Asians, too.

Thank you for illustrating the Ugly American stereotype so well.

The thread makers premise is false.

Plenty of poor people vote Republican, and they vote against their economic interests. If that weren't the case, Republicans would never win national office.
