Why do negroes and poor whites vote Democrat an middle & upper class vote Republican?

What is really ironic is that the Republican party was started in the Northern states as the anti-slavery party.

Democrats were traditionally Southern.

What is also ironic is that the states that tend to usually vote Democratic pay in more taxes then they recieve through subsidies, while the states who tend to usually vote Republican are actually "welfare states", meaning they get more tax money in the form of subsidies and welfare than they pay into the system.

I think that is blatantly false given the margins that Clinton won by in his two elections. I have found in conversing and listening to people of all backgrounds that quite a few, if not a majority, of lower middle class whites vote Republican and usually most of the higher classes are split more evenly.

There is a decidedly racist assumption in saying that all blacks vote democrat and also saying it is because they expect a bigger handout from the government. You might as well just come out and say that all black folks are lazy and on welfare.

Where? Where has that been shown? Why don't you quit pulling figures out of your ass about a country that you've never even visited and show some stats? You've had great, thoughtful responses here about how there are so many factors that go into political affiliation, like religious belief and education, not to mention the increasing inaccuracy of identifying people in our multicultural society as "black" or "white". Can't speak to why certain racial groups vote Democrat or Republican but as for the monetary disparity that is easy.

The poor see Democrats as the party that will give the most. The part that will increase public welfare programs and how much they can get out of them with the least amount of work. They see Republicans as wanting to take those programs away.

Those with enough money not to need social programs tend to view Democrats as stealing their money (through taxes) to give away to a bunch of lazy people who just leech off the system instead of getting up off their butts and working to improve their lives. They view Republicans as the party that will take the least amount of their money.

**Note, both of these are massive generalizations meant to illustrate a point not necessarily the only way people view these issues.**

Viewed from a strictly fiscal standpoint the more interesting question, imho, would be why there are still poor people that vote Republican and middle/upper class people that vote Democrat?
