Will someone define 'vanilla' for me?

Plus, it's really hard to define levels of kink. Is being handcuffed to the bed in straight metal cuffs more or less kinky than being tied to the bed with rope? Is using the furry cuffs more or less kinky than either straight metal cuffs or rope? Is a leather corset more or less kinky than a vinyl one? Is a riding crop more or less kinky than a cat-of-nine-tails? Are either of these more or less kinky than a belt or a paddle? Is someone who wants to be tied to the bed facedown with rope and spanked with a paddle till they cum more or less kinky than someone who wants their hands cuffed behind their back and be spanked open-hand till while standing in the corner but doesn't want to cum that way?

And so on and so forth. :D

I think it was said above. Kink is how "kinky" you feel. I'm sure my idea of kink is quite different than someone who is seriously into BDSM. Then again, some things I know I like are super-kinky to others.

Really, and how did poor vanilla get this bum rap, anyway? Seems Mel Brooks had it better with plain ole yogurt.

Vanilla has lots of taste, expecially Vanilla Bean. I bet every woman on this site has vanilla in her cupboard and uses to make a bland batter into something fit for a king.

Odd, how words get tagged and then stuck. Like the word awe, which no one uses properly anymore.

I still want to know what strawberry sex would be, though?

I dunno what strawberry sex would be, but I suspect that vanilla got such a bad rap based on the teasing that people do when someone will only get vanilla this-or-that, and won't try other flavors. So people who are into experimenting with restraints and toys and costumes and body paint and everything else use the flavor to describe those who won't experiment outside what they're comfortable with. It's faintly scornful, IMO, but nothing derogatory I don't think.

The association that pops into my head with strawberry would be sex during menses.

And sometimes the toys turn out to be highly overrated and no improvement on the original version, anyway. A little dash of this and that now and again is wonderful but replacing licking and fucking with paddles? That seems . . . just odd, I guess.

There are those to whom Vanilla is to kink as kink is to Vanilla - they don't even wanna go there.

Which leads to the conclusion that the kinkiest thing a kinkster can do is have Vanilla sex.

I would say the bum rap stems from defensiveness, as these things so often do; the BDSM folk were pariahs within their sexual communities (meaning straight, gay, lesbian) for decades.

Many folk in those days never got a chance to taste these flavors that they may have been craving until after years of "regular" tinted with fantasies. For someone like this-- trust me on this one-- it's damn near impossible to think of the unsatisfying diet you were fed without a certain amount of resentment, for a few years or so...

If vanilla sex is missionary position sex, then I agree with you Stella. My Italian ex-Catholic husband's guilt complex left me with many nights of orgasmless intercourse in the missionary position and I resented the hell of out of it for years. Until I met the man who showed me why it was used in the first place and restored my faith. Now I enjoy them all and look forward to new ones, since I have entered the realm of debauchery, only slightly, but significantly.

Coulda been worse, they could have called it Oatmeal. Or Farina.

Vanilla is much better, I'm even maybe a little more fond of French Vanilla - I even like Farina too, although I always had a thing about the lumps.

The ice cream analogy is spot on, but it breaks down quickly. Once you get past missionary-position-in-the-dark-on-Saturday-nights-only, the sex gets too hot and the ice cream melts.

The first to cultivate vanilla were the Totonac people, who inhabit the Mazantla Valley on the Gulf Coast of Mexico in the present-day state of Veracruz. According to Totonac mythology, the tropical orchid was born when Princess Xanat, forbidden by her father from marrying a mortal, fled to the forest with her lover. The lovers were captured and beheaded. Where their blood touched the ground, the vine of the tropical orchid grew.[3]
Wikipedia: Vanilla

Somewhat romantic.

Icing. Vanilla icing. That's beginning to sound slightly kinky. Or whipped cream with warm fudge drizzled all over it.

That is totally romantic. I knew Vanilla did not deserve this bland fate that Americans have forced on her. Revolt, Vanilla. Make them use the better word.

BEIGE!

They're basically pee-holes.

Were you out sick when your biology class covered human anatomy?

I mean, I can totally understand how that could happen. My daughter was home with the father and mother of cases of poison ivy when her elementary school class went through weights and measures. When she started cooking she asked me how many teaspoons went in a tablespoon and stuff like that for years

Taupe has too much pink and that leads back to the strawberry. Poor ignored strawberry.

As pointed out, it's not about ice cream, it's about the flavor. And it's a bum rap because vanilla was once the most common flavor. A favorite flavor, yes, a good flavor even, but common. Chocolate and the rest used to be "rare" and exotic.

Hence, vanilla sex is what the vast majority do or have. What is common, not exotic, rare or strange. And let's face it, it still is common to add a dash of vanilla to almost any baked goods. But you rarely add a dash of other flavors like hazelnut or lemon, right? So the metaphor still stands.

What can be easily, commonly, most often done. Nothing strange or exotic or rare. Doesn't mean it's no good, just that it's not unique.

Sex with a redskin, I like that thought. But strawberry buttocks has a nice allure to it, as well. Hard to choose. Better yet, I could get soundly spanked by a redskin and have both at once.
