I do believe the moderator made a poor decision, and that the lightest possible hand is best.

But I also think that the dumping on the mod, who is, I presume, an unpaid volunteer doing a thankless job because of their dedication to the site, is getting to be pretty fucking cringey.

Absolutely.

We shouldn't dump on people, period. We can suggest improvements and changes but we should not question the good faith of those who make the decisions unless we have VERY strong evidence for doing so. And the fact is, we're working on skimpy and incomplete evidence, so we should be restrained in our judgments. Let's keep proposing how we can do things better without assuming that those with different choices and perspectives are rotten or stupid.
