Your favorite lesbian or gay couple in TV / movies

Mary and Charlotte in the movie Ammonite. It was a bit minimal, but I loved it anyway, at least until the end. That just pissed me off.

It was mostly lovely (though the sex scene was awkward). Sadly it has zero basis in any historical record. Except for the trope that any woman who doesn’t marry is therefore a lesbian.

Speaking as someone who has had lesbian relationships, I thought it was done to spice up the story. A great scientist doesn’t need that in my opinion.

If 'history' had its way she'd have been missing entirely
I've never had had a has has relationship. You're one ahead of me

Agreed. The second easiest way to upset me by including a gay or lesbian relationship in your story is when it’s obviously done for shock value and not believable or well written.

The fastest way to upset me? Make the couple in question overly critical of straight relationships. I know it’s realistic, but I just like to think they would understand the old wisdom about glass houses and stones.

Apologies if I struck a chord there. I just like the movie for itself.

A good chunk of what we know paleontology started due to Mary Anning digging fossils for a living. I wish they spent more time on that and less on a forced romance.

Sorry if I appeared to be over-reactive.

I liked a lot about the movie (especially Saorise) but that aspect jarred a bit.

No probs. I completely understand the concern over fudging the truth for sensationalism. At the time I first saw the movie, I was not aware that it was loosely based on a true story, nor was I aware of Mary Anning and her contributions to paleontology.(Just not my thing) I had been flipping through HULU for something to watch, and the synopsis simply piqued my interest.

She was a woman who contributed massively to human knowledge at a time when women were basically barred from doing that. She got little public recognition in her time, but the members of the scientific institutions, ones that would not admit her, knew who to approach if they wanted an expert.

It’s both a sad and uplifting tale, without the need for lesbian sex gratuitously thrown in (I’m rather partial to lesbian sex, but not when it is in a supposedly historical piece and - as far as we know - wholly unfounded).

Why sexualize a woman who did great things for science? It feels like saying she’s only interesting if she has a sex life.

I've not seen the movie, but I like to imagine that Kate and Saoirse were just so hot for each other that they demanded it be included.

Then kissing is beautiful. The sex scene rather less so - in my expert opnion.

Having sold a few lines of prose I am rather dismayed at the process of creating any form of "popular" literature or cinema. Authors have ideas and visions for their creations and fans, those who pay for everything, have their own separate wants and desires. The more popular anything is the more voices are heard and the more the publishers and producers want to...

Well, they aren't really trying to make everyone happy. Because as the fan base gets "too" large, that is an impossibility. They are trying to not make anyone so unhappy they leave the tent. That never works for long, and the idea born with such promise dies of mediocrity and familiarity.
