2008 News & Views: Discussion and Announcements for the Survivorphile

I'm a non-Survivalist, but I just wanted to pop in and say howdy to all the entrants and good luck to you! I give you all a lot of credit, I don't think I could come up with enough ideas to write enough stories to finish even in the top one thousand.

Sorry to hear it's raining where you are Erin, or at least it was when you posted the message I'm now replying to. We haven't had rain in a few days. Last week was pretty nice weather for autumn. Supposed to have some rain and thunderstorms later tonight though.

Later taters! :D

All it would take to finish in the top hundred would be one story or poem. :D

For all those just joining or those that have been so busy writing - come to the Discussion group. I'm lonely and want someone to talk to :)

Erin

I'm not sure, but I think tomorrow is the last day to sign up. :eek:That would be today, for those on the East Coast or in Europe. :D

Yeah, I'm having one of those years. I planned to try and crack 100 points this year. I'll be lucky to make 50 the way I'm going at the moment. No ideas that hold up under scrutiny.

SamuelX

I heard a rumor that their may be a new contestant signing up before the deadline.

I've been trying to convince him to join. He has plenty of stories already posted on line. Besides, he's a near neighbor of mine, hailing from Massachusetts.

Samuelx has been posting stories nearly every day. I told him that there was free money available. I even told him that I'd love the competition. With all the stories that he already has posted, he will certainly give me a run for the money.

I'd love to see a new competitor join the ranks and shake things up a little.

If you are reading this post, X, I dare you. I double dog dare you to beat me.

C'mon, buddy, you still have 3 months to go. You can write at least 100 stories in three months.

Erin, wooohooo! Sounds like you're doing great!

I need to write a lot more stories, but first I have to persuade my brain to write them... I think I burned myself out during the spring when for a while I was posting a new story every day. I have two that are almost finished, but every time I start working on them I lose interest after a few minutes.

Oh, well, I'll get something done sometime soon. lol

I've noticed a dip in my comments too. I've gotten far worse comments than that, Erin. LOL

I'm hoping that my entry in the Halloween contest at least generates some good comments and feedback. I could use that right now.

Good afternoon all,

I think I have reached a new low with the comments people leave for me. Someone believes my story is not acceptable, not long enough, and should be removed from the site.

I didn't think I could anger someone that much. Oh well.

Anyone else putting in a story for the Halloween competition?

Erin

My story is not yet posted, but it will be in a few hours. I RCVed yours. It was better than what the first poster said, but it did leave some things to be desired. The first few paragraphs were erotic enough, although I would have expanded on the action and included more details. Of course, I am strictly a smut peddler.

The story was long enough, but there were a few loose ends. You could have gone into more details as to what the ceremony was and why it had to be done, and how they could have known the people involved were virgins. Also, there were three peope involved in the sacrifice, but what happened to the third one?

I won't speculate here on who wrote the first PC, but if I did and if you did, I strongly suspect we would both come up with the same person.

ETA: I don't think I have ever gotten as nasty a comment as the one you deleted except, maybe, in LW.

Ooh! I just checked after reading your post and, yes, my submissions list has twice the number of Hs it did yesterday too.

I actually have a couple more Hs than I had before I got bombed. That's extra nice.

So, Erin, should we turn off voting now?

I leave all comments up, unless they're duplicates. I don't watch them closely enough after the first month to catch comments as they go up. Actually went through them all about two months ago and came across several comments I hadn't seen before

And I don't bother about the scores after the first few weeks either. I watch closely in teh first few days and can usually get a fair idea of how good the real readers think the story is. It only takes one or two low votes to wreck an average, but if it's up around 4 it's probably pretty good ;).

I've been watching the last month or so, after our latest little stoush, and yeah, all my stuff got a new vote in one 24-hour period and all my scores dropped.

After you mentioned it, I checked today. All my stories have been swept of one vote and all my scores are back up. There were obviously some extra votes on some of them, because I've gained four Hs over what I had before.

So I really don't mind if he bombs my stuff - it seems it brings in other, kinder readers.

The Hs will reappear sometime in the next day or so - when I got bombed I noticed the Hs were still there for a day or more after the scores plummeted. Then they were gone.

Well, I seriously doubt any one of us knows who bombs our stuff. It's not likely to be another author. Think about it. An author would have to have an IQ of 4 to bother bombing someone's work. (If you were referring to BFW, he may be abrasive at times, but he's definitely not stupid). Authors know that 1-bombs are swept. So, what would be the point?

My work gets bombed all the time, especially when it first appears. I seriously think there are just those people who enjoy giving out 1-bombs to the new stories- no matter who the author is. They don't seem to care who they bomb. It's some kind of game for them.

Sheila - You're probably right. I just think that nothing is a coincidence. Both Starrkers and I have had our scores lowered after being vocal on the boards. Maybe someone else is purposely voting down our stories but there is a "someone" who does that at the exact time as I stood up to bullies on here.

In any case I'm going for a nap. My lovey cute child (and thank god he is cute) decided 1am was a good bed time. I'm tired.

Erin

I agree that sometimes things look suspicious, but don't you realize how many people read these messages? Have you ever gotten PM's from people who have read a message you wrote and wanted to comment directly to you about it? I have.. many times, and often from unfamiliar users who proved not to be alts. Even though they don't post, they lurk on the boards. And, let's face it, we all have fans. If I post something negative, even if I'm just responding to negativity, what's to stop a lurker from "punishing" me by a barrage of 1-bombs? I'm sure it happens. In the meantime, it looks like I'm being attacked by the person who I made a negative comment to.

I'm not saying that my scenario is what happens to you. It is just one of many possibilities. I just don't think that authors are attacking each other with 1-bombs. Authors know they get swept, so it doesn't make sense.

I hope you don't take this as negativity directed toward you or anyone. It's not meant like that. I'm just tired of a lot of negativity between authors and poets here. It's hurtful to all involved and really unnecessary. I've decided to avoid one forum on the boards because of it. I don't need negativity in my life.

It has been so quiet. Either everyone is busy writing their Halloween entries or freaking out over the fast-approaching NaNoWriMo.

Where's kitty?
