What whiskey or scotch is your favorite? I’m looking for one I had years ago that I can’t remember the name of… but it was SO smooth

In my mouth those taste awful. But a good vodka I can drink even raw - and have, as it is used as a shot at dinner table sometimes.

My mouth separates the taste of some alcohols as a mixture of several chemicals - which they actually are - instead of a single taste. Especially cognac, whiskey, brandy. And those chemicals are indeed some that if you were offered to drink them separately, you wouldn't even dream of tasting. Even if they were just listed as ingredients, you would refuse. (Traditionally they come up in the process of making the alcohol, but nowadays they are sometimes also added.)
