Disappointments

That's a recent development, though. Well... a couple three years, anyway. It used to be that there was more of a mix of chiller and straight horror ( albeit wit sex ) in with the current leading sub-genres.

Stories like my Harvest of Blood and Home by the Sea used to do pretty well in the category back in the day. Those two were on page 1 of the toplist for the longest time. Harvest has slipped about .15 over the years, and if I'm remembering right, Home has fallen about .20 ( not surprising, considering it's an early story when I was still figuring things out ) as the dynamics changed. If released today, Harvest would probably hit at about 4.4 and Home in the low 4s.

I've written horror stories, from subtle to gory. I've written a boat load of porn over the last year or two, but for the life of me can't mix them, it's really bizarre.

I have no problem with sex in mainstream horror novels, but in EH where it is as much focus as the horror itself I can't get into it. reading or writing.

Storm62's Part 2 of "Thoughts and Alcohol" got poor voter reception, and the story was really too good to be true in many ways, but I thought it deserved better.

Sometimes I read a story and don't vote b/c I'd want to give it a 2 or 3. I've read a number of posts from people who say they only vote if they can give it a 4 or 5. Should I give it the 2 or 3 if I think that's what it deserves? Maybe.

In my case I would very much like that vote. What I was trying to do with my stories, was see which ones people took the most interest in before continuing with the other chapters. If the score was poor I would let it die and stop wasting the readers time and the space it took on the server to post it.

But so far everything I've uploaded is running neck and neck at around a 4.4 average. The views are in the 10,000 and more. The people that voted are between 200 to 500 so I'm not sure how to judge the scores.

It also doesn't help when I get people sending me messages to please continue the chapters. So I guess I just might have to continue with all of them. Which I didn't expect to do. So I guess my idea is flaud.

I would love to hear if someone has a better way of dealing with something like this.

If you're getting 200 to 500 votes and a 4.4 average, then there's certainly a readership out there for what you're writing. I wouldn't remotely worry about any score above 4.0 with that many votes, really.

Even scores below 4.0 could be nothing to worry about if you have any political or religious themes, or enemies on the forum, or you're "threatening" the toplist position of a story with a fanbase lacking in scruples.

Or if you post in Loving Wives at all.

If you're getting email and comment feedback to continue with those sort of average stats, then continue them all, because you're more in danger of angering the reader base you've built than anything if you stop.

Or, most important of all, you post because you have to, because you want to write and tell your story your way, and you don't give a raw red rusty fuck whether anybody reads it or likes it. As the old song says, "I'm a rambler, I'm a gambler, I'm a long way from home, and if people don't like me, they can leave me alone."

I agree! I write because I have a story to tell. I do hope the readers enjoy it or at least understand it, but as you know I write because I want to. I like a decent score as much as the next writer but I write to get my story out of my head. LOL

That hardly seems fair. Bad stories create clutter, making it harder for the rest of us to find the stories that are actually worth reading.

What's bad to one person is often fantastic to another. This isn't a quality review process here.

This is what I was going to say:

"Maybe I'm overreacting, but I'm used to hearing 'it doesn't matter if anyone else likes it, so long as I like it' as a justification for garbage like this story."

Then I discovered that said story was rated 4.04. I'll shut up now.

No reason for you to shut up. If you think a story is trash, don't read it, or lay a blast on it in "send feedback" or "public comment", or here on Story Feedback. SA Penn Lady is right; there is no quality control here, nor should there be.

Wow. I just read a little of that. It is reaching Ed-Wood-ian levels of badness.

I agree, there's a lot of crap here. But apparently those who screen the stories have not opted to block such; so you click the mouse and take your chances.

I'd say the rating for this story just points up what a friend said to me -- There are low-quality writers, and there are low-quality readers.

"…it doesn't matter if anyone else likes it…" may be offered as a justification, even though it isn't one. But, it's still a reason.

Or alts are at play. Sadly this is not the worst thing I have ever read here. Want bad? Go find the "Markus steelcock" stories like beavis and butthead writing porn.

Thescore being over a four can also be attributed to a low total of votes and also most people did not read far enough to vote so it did not get hammered.

ah well, voter democracy ftw.

I guess my stories have few votes too.

It amazes me that writers (me included) set so much store by what anonymous voters-commentators, of whose credentials, qualifications, professional standing, and even of whose identities we are totally unaware (and cannot possibly know), say or vote.

It's a cliché that the reader owes the author nothing--not feedback, not a comment, not even a vote. Moreover, even if the reader does vote, or comment, or provide feedback, the reader need not be unprejudiced, unfair or unbiased, or motivated by the slightest goodwill toward the author.

And yet the lamentations go on.

With Much Regret

I understand that Grandmistress Lisa Jones has quitted Literotica, and will post in future at other sites. As I don't wish to be accused of spamming, I will not mention those other sites here. I must say I am sorry that this fine writer has seen fit to leave Literotica, as I much enjoyed GMLJ's work. It was a privilege to copy edit GMLJ's work.

SexiSkye's "Mommy Isn't Kissing Santa This Year" has a funny plotline and some hot writing, but the mechanicals were enough to make me give up. It may be that English is not the writer's first language; some sentence construction seems to be based on another language. Dare I suggest that s/he employ an editor?

I do not believe in a fate that falls on men however they act; but I do believe in a fate that falls on them unless they act.

I'm pretty sure it's a spammer who forgot to add a lame, malware-laden link to his signature line, thus leaving him sounding like a poor-man's self-help guru and making him the laughing stock on the 1337 spam0rz IRC channel :p

Nice Guy by Katmai

I was disappointed with the third chapter. It was almost like a different person wrote it. I didn't understand it at all. All the set up, the anticipation then boom total crap. Sad, it had potential. As a contrast 'People can Change' by Deyaker had a superb finish. The stories played out similarly, one author stepped up and hit a homerun, the other stood there like the house by the side of the road and struck out looking.

I am disappointed to find out that one of the biggest incest authors on this site has had someone ghost writing a good portion of his work. The idiot let it slip in a public comment and even though he went back and deleted it, there were a shit load after it that showed people caught it.

Not being able to write your own story on a free site with no expectations, beyond disappointing. It is pathetic.
