I can see that but why was she not liking what you posted when she was posting with you and sarcastically (toward the thread not you) also?
Sometimes this place makes my head hurt dolly.
Because although she says she "gets it", she doesn't.

another who just doesn't understand sarcasm and sardonic humor. I can't teach them this. LOL

And she said she was posting in "jest." I guess that's not the same thing to her as posting sarcasm.

They are extremely young.

I find that sarcasm is sometimes wasted on some of the very young. Come to think of it, it is lost on some of the older folk too.

No matter. It will sort itself out at the end of the day.

Don't despair!

You mean we spent all of that time in school for nothing?

Ebonyfire, don't despair! You didn't spend all that time in school for nothing. It simply means, though most of the public doesn't understand this, that there is indeed a difference between Harvard and Bob's School of the Written Word. One is accredited and legitimate, the other only makes that claim. Because you got the right kinda schooling, I'm sure you know which is which!

Spew-

When someone reads a comment made in an online community, whilst drinking a beverage, and nearly (or literally) spits said beverage at the keyboard/computer screen, because the comment made them laugh, or caught them off gaurd. Also known as "spew alert".

It was much easier to understand your last post, Torreyjs, thank you for taking the time to write it. ;)

While I was aware that the forum was a place for people to voice their thoughts, ideas, and opinions, I had no clue that the required undertone was built on animosity toward new members.
Actually...you might be onto something there. I am active in at least two discussion groups where new members are looked on with great suspicion. They are tormented mercilessly, snarked at, and brushed off. If they make it through, they are welcomed into the fold. Some don't make it, and they disappear.

So what you're describing is not unheard of, actually.

Erm. Well, I'm glad they made sure you had the appropriate training for teaching CPR, at least. But, um...yeah. No further comment.

I've always felt "entering" an online community is a rather delicate affair. Watch the dynamics for a little while; start quietly posting things that are benificial to the boards (personal knowledge that helps others, etc); be on your "best behaviour" language/grammar/presentation wise, and don't splurge soul sucking neediness all over the place, until people realize that you are willing ot be a part of the community for the long haul/help others through times of soul sucking neediness. ;)

I can honestly say out of roughly 8 years of participating in online communities, I've never been tormented or attacked when "joining" in the manner I just described... or if I was, I was too stubborn to pay attention.

You have to admit though, we are fairly open to new people here. It's just hard to bit one's tongue at times. We wouldn't be so snappy at new posters if most of them took the time to put forward a well though-out observation or even a valid question from time to time.

Nobody is perfect, I know. But we can only hold our thoughts back for so long.

Ummm...forgive me but the "Location: South Carolina" probably clarifies your confusion?
No, not really. But maybe that's because my location is on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean and a non-English speaking countrey, so I really don't see what the "Location: South Carolina" has to do with anything.

*cough* spell check! *cough* come on ... F7 .. that's allll you need to do!

Although, that's why kids these days learn fuck all .. because there is such a thing as spell check and a calculator .. if you put a spelling test in front of most children they would cry, run to Microsoft Word and press F7. And if you put simple maths problems in front of them and took the calculator away they wouldn't be able to do it. And yet our parents can do some of the hardest sums on paper.

Bring back the black-board damnit!

Although I agree on the one hand.... on the other it's not even so bad if you think about it. For me? I don't care what people use to be able to write more than four words in a row without a spell- or grammar mistake or typo. Be it F7 on your computer or an old fashioned dictionary. The idea is that they care. That they are making an effort and know they don't come across as very intelligent/caring if they can't type one single sentence without a mistake. I guess, for me, that goes double for teachers, no matter what subject they teach. They are supposed to be the example, in many ways.

I feel that the (general) consensus is that if you don't care to make an effort to make your post readable you don't care too much about being taken serious. If you don't ask an understandable question, how do you expect to get an answer people make time for and put effort in?

Does it have to do with newcomers? I don't know. I agree with what Cutie Mouse said. When you are new somewhere, no matter if that's on a forum or in a place in real life, you first check out what the dynamics are and with what group of people you are dealing with. If you can't conform somewhat to those dynamics, maybe you need to ask yourself if you belong there at all.

And I'm sure, here at Lit, you really don't have to be a professor in the English language. Everyone makes spelling mistakes and typo's. That's OK. But people who are taken seriously do proofread and such I assume.

Just my two cents (well, maybe more  )

Bring back the black-board dammit!

Don't forget the Google Toolbar for a spell check, my own personal love :)

But it's not fair that I go to sleep wake up and miss everything :(

Now I don't know who is the dark Soul of Lit, is it Eb?, and ADR has it in her sig line for one week only, or is it ADR, as it is in her sig line? OR is it someone else who is lurking in the shadows? perhaps Kiten or Captains Wench are so dark and subversive that we haven't actually noticed their subversion until they take over the World

I understand the CPR thing of the new poster, it only has 3 letters and therefore qualifies as text speak.

I was never chewed out as a newbie, I was ignored sometimes but thats to be expected.
I also said dumb things sometimes; then I was jumped on but I deserved it.
Nothing to do with being new, everything to do with being dumb.

I just want to say that I always meant to be polite and didn't mean to start this rather strange conversation.
Personally I don't think it takes any longer typing the right way (and using punctuation) than typing the wrong way, with those strange abbreviations and online lingo and stuff. Use all the fingers you have and you can be amazingly fast without many mistakes. Typos happen to everybody. Occasionally. And because of that it doesn't matter. If occasionally there is NO typo, then something is just wrong.

As a side note, I don't use a spell check. Never have. If a word doesn't look right, I check it in a dictionary/similar. And I'm very lucky that I have this ability not only in German, but in English, French and Italian as well. :cathappy:
