Harvard president Claudine Gay has problems. Touted as the first black woman to run the nation’s most prestigious university, she assumed leadership with high expectations, but her tenure, which began this summer, has been mired in scandal. As dean and then president, Gay has been accused of bullying colleagues, suppressing free speech, overseeing a racist admissions program, and, following the Hamas terror campaign against Israel, failing to stand up to rampant anti-Semitism on campus.

We have obtained exclusive documentation demonstrating that President Gay may face yet another problem: plagiarism of sections of her Ph.D. dissertation, which would violate Harvard’s own stated policies on academic integrity. (We reached out to President Gay for comment, but received no response.)

Gay published her dissertation, “Taking Charge: Black Electoral Success and the Redefinition of American Policies,” in 1997, as part of her doctorate in political science from Harvard. The paper deals with white-black political representation and racial attitudes. As evaluated under the university’s plagiarism policy, the paper contains at least three problematic patterns of usage and citation.

First, Gay lifts an entire paragraph nearly verbatim from Lawrence Bobo and Franklin Gilliam’s paper, “Race, Sociopolitical Participation, and Black Empowerment,” while passing it off as her own paraphrase and language. Here is the original, from Bobo and Gilliam:

Based on her congressional testimony a few days ago alone, she deserves to be dismissed. The above only fortifies that notion. She's another left-wing wacko on a political mission.

For what it's worth, the Ivies handle dissertations a little differently than most other universities do. First of all, they don't even make you take your oral exams (the last step before you become ABD) until you and your advisors are confident you'll pass. This leads to a somewhat more relaxed, clubbier atmosphere than you would get at most universities. Unfortunately, that does make it more likely a mistake like this one will slip through. I'm not saying that's any excuse, but it is an explanation that has nothing to do with anyone going easy on her for Affirmative Action reasons.

When I was an undergrad, I knew a guy who did the same thing Gay did here. His punishment was to spend a semester on academic probation. I thought that fit the crime then, and I still think so now.

Why look at it, it already is coming from an overly opinionated biased source. Every time there might be a single fact (the name of the person the article is about would usually be that single lone fact).

Did she plagiarize? I don't think she did consciously so but I also do not think, based upon watching her testimony, that she has what it takes to produce original work instead, in a publish-or-perish culture she produces derivative work as so many do. I don't think anyone really reads 90% of published papers, it's just something you have to do to keep advancing in the governmental-educational complex.

Do you realize that schools like Harvard sit on millions and millions, maybe billions, of dollars from endowments and alumni gifts, not to mention the sky-high tuition that they don't spend because our government keeps funneling money (tax dollars from people who could never get into those schools) to them? That's why they have to hire people like their current President, to stay optically in the good graces of government largess which increasingly has social justice boxes that need to be checked before they break out the pallets of cash that never produce the anticipated result (an Iranian joke).
