Pink Orchid: Story Event for Women-Centric Erotica - Official Support Thread

The final list is now out! 532k words, 44 stories and 1 poem, featuring 18 categories! Wow!

My sincerest thanks to everyone who participated. I have been really happy with this event, and hope to host it again next year.
Thank you for commenting on my story. (You really must have read them all!) I hope my response cleared up a point that you brought up.

I did read them all! In the final list were two stories and a poem that I hadn't found, and those I haven't read yet. But I'm going to.

Thanks for all your work, O!

I picked up one vote overnight that didn't change the rating and a trickle of views. So far, the event page has done a little, but not a lot.

Many thanks, Omenainen, for guiding this event. Clearly, the process wasn't all lighthearted fun. Your interest in holding the event again next year speaks well of your fortitude.

I won't yet try to assess the effect on my story of the appearance of the event page. My story is too long to be an impulse read.

I still haven't had any flak, despite one helpful soul linking to me from their Loving Wives -story.
Oh, crap! I hope my compliment for your efforts didn't backfire. ;-) You asked why I published in LW. One reason was to stand up to the trolls that live there, I don't like how the BTB crowd has hijacked the category. I didn't think that I might unintentionally lead them to your more civilized neighborhood. :-( Kudos again for all your work on this.

Had to translate "fortitude". Thank you! I think having women-centric, sex positive smut is a worthy cause, and I am all for fighting for a good cause.

This would be the right place to mention it's International Women's Day :):)

Yes! Most awesome International Women's Day for one and for all!

It looks like my valentines day virgin sacrifice story didn't make the final list. It was marked Pink Orchid in the tag and the sub heading. It was more educational for men than women centric, I'll have to try better next year.

It didn't? Aww, that's a shame. I thought it was hilarious. You need to include it in the "note to admin" for it to be an event story. But, as we've seen, having a link on a list doesn't necessarily amount to much. Contest lists are up longer, but event lists are a more fleeting thing. Events are more to keep us authors entertained, I think. Most of the visibility will come through the new lists, event or no event.

Oh, it was you? I just remember that someone linked to me in their author's note, and I laughed when I saw it, because I thought that a mention in LW is possibly not only good. So far it hasn't backfired, nor this whole event, though I was prepared in case I would attract "who is this asshole saying that women are people!" lowbrows my way. On the other hand, I suppose trolls are lazy and unfocused, and don't bother roaming outside LW all that much. Thank you for the mention. And thank you for the story, I liked it. It's good to have some good examples to point to for future reference. One positive outcome of this event, for me, was to read a few good Loving Wives stories, because I very seldomly read in that category otherwise.

Some more data:

6 authors provided at least 2 stories, including one triple-threat overachiever.

Most popular categories were:

8 each in Romance & EC
7 Lesbian
6 LW
3 Mature

1 each in Anal, BDSM, Fetish, Interracial, IT, Letters, Mind control, Novels, Sci-Fi, T&C, Poetry

For what it's worth, 13 authors self-identified as male, 9 as female, 1 trans.
A dozen authors self-identify as straight, several as Bi or pansexual.

Thank you yowser for extra statistics! 37 different authors by my count. There were several whose event story was their first story, and I think that is excellent.

I'm already thinking forward to what I will do differently next year. What do you all think, is it okay to point to stories as positive examples without asking for permission from the author? I mean if next time around someone is unclear on how to write something, can I then say "check out how X did that last year in story Y". It would probably be classier to ask for permission, but on the other hand, these are published stories publicly linked to the event, and I would only use them as positive examples on what to do.

You can suggest reading any of my stories to anyone, any time, for any reason. 😄

I don't think you need to ask for permission, but by bringing it up here you give people a chance to raise their hand if they don't want you to use their story as an example.

Thank you! I'll keep that in mind :D

I can of course also use my own stories, but since my aim is not to tell everyone to "just do what I do", it would make sense to have a broader set of examples.

It doesn't matter what you point to, whether it's your stories or others you like. You would then be directing author to "Write stories I like, and not like those others."

Do you want to turn it into a "Write for Omenainen Challenge? Would you be learning anything or growing by seeing what others think of the general subject?

Your PM's with me made my story better, although still not what you wanted.

If anything, I would recommend just reviewing your challenge guidance and turn that into a forum discussion to get other opinions or PMs with others on changes before posting that guidance.

None of you write what I want, that's why I write my own. I can appreciate a well-written story even if it is not what I would personally prefer.

I will change the event announcement for next year, if only to drop the "female empowerment" that seems to confuse so many. But I don't need a committee to tell me what I want my event to be about. You want to have an event with different emphasis, you go for it. No one is stopping you.

Go for it, dude, send them my way lol

The story list has brought in some attention. In the eight days before March 8, my story averaged about 16 views per day. On March 8, there were 53. On March 9, 49. On March 10, 22, so it's almost back to where it was.

My views also got a bump. I was, and probably still am, getting views from the Vday contest page,so I can't completely isolate the affect from the event page. It looks like the event page still produced about 20 views yesterday, declining day-to-day.

Well, I’m disappointed only my weaker story made it on the list. I submitted this one the last day of February, but it only went live on the site a few hours ago (sat in pending 12 days): Ladonna’s Quandary. So it missed out.

As to stats, since I haven’t been tracking stats closely, it’d be hard to prise out if my single story that’s on the Pink Orchid list got any bumps from this, or from also being tagged for Valentine’s Day, or at this point from this new story going live.

But, I can say one thing, a few hours before this new story was posted, I did pick up a new follower. But not sure I can tie that to Pink Orchid.

I think the scores on my entry are fair enough - low 4's and I'm planning to replace the original with a re-write. It was good to have a focus in Pink Orchid but tbh most of my story feature strong women with real world attitudes - I can't imagine writing any other way. If my male characters step out of line they get a bonk on the nose, but I write my genders as equals. I suppose in that respect I'm writing fairy tales :sneaky:

Jesus, do I really want to go searching for what about “female empowerment” confused people?
You've not been here long enough to know about the many undercurrents that drift through the Literotica river. They run deeper and wider than you'd think, and the words don't always have the same meanings for those swimming there.
