Public nudity reality check

Fantasy Fest in Key West

Don't judge what really happens by the photos on the official site. Admittedly, with popularity there have been crackdowns on outright nudity, but it was the rule rather that the exception in prior years. Just do a DuckDuckGo search for "Fantasy Fest" images with safe search turned off for an eyeful.

Public nudity IS a thing, and not just for porn sites or Lit stories.

Sometimes you have to know where to look, but it's often where you least expect it - bit you don't see it, because you aren't expecting it.

Nude-friendly locations (many mentioned above):
- Burning Man
- Festivals
- San Francisco nude races, Folsom St. festival, and others.
- Many nude beaches, including some that aren't strictly nude, but are fairly tolerant (e.g. Miami Beach.)
- Nude facilities in public locations - such as in Key West,
- Many (most?) public beaches, after dark - not frequent, but it happens. Ask any beach patrol cop. My son was caught and fined having sex on a beach after dark. My wife and I did it too, at the same age, but we was smart enough not to get caught. And no, we didn't tell our son LOL.
- Skinny-dipping in hotel pools at night. (Ask almost every hotel manager.) My wife and I I have done this several times.
- World Naked Bike Ride
- Some of the "critical mass" bike rides or other events in bigger cities sometimes yield nekkid bodies.
...the list goes on.

In regular locations? I've seen nudity:
- Cruise ships, pulled into a harbor for the day. When the weather gets nice, you can occasionally see people basking in the sun - nude. Though in fairness, you'll usually need binoculars to see them. My wife and I do this regularly.
- Nude hikers - not common, and most frequently around the summer solstice (the annual nude-hiking day). More common in some states than others. I've seen this.
- While hiking, if you see anyone well off the trail - at an overlook, beside water, or just in an off-the-trail area that's mostly hidden by bushes etc. I've obviously seen this many times - but on a few occasions, those people have been nude.
- Natural springs. Some states (e.g. Oregon) tolerate nudity at almost all natural springs.
- Hotels. As a frequent business traveler (2 weeks/ month for over 30 years) I've seen nudity in hotel hallways, through hotel windows when the guests elect to not draw their shades, and in the pools at night.
- Twice, when kayaking down a river, I've seen nude sunbathers on the river banks. (Potomac river, and the Raritan in NJ.)
- Vegas! I've seen it on the streets, in pools, and through hotel windows. See my (mostly) true story here: https://literotica.com/s/what-happens-on-the-bus-from-vegas
...the list goes on ;) and I'm not including late-night party animals who are extremely drunk or high, or the streakers of the '70s and 80s <guilty :)>.

As a nudist, I've been nude in many of these situations, but I'm also more aware of it.

So yes, nudity in public happens.

Like I said earlier. What gets me about this "debate" is the OP's premise that since they have only seen it once in their lifetime, it therefore must be a rare thing that's simply being overblown in erotica and porn. It's not overblown, it's even normal/expected in some instances. Again, right-place-right-time.

That was not my premise.

It is overblown in erotica and porn, but it's not my lack of experience with it that makes me think so. I have no idea how much it's ovetblown by.

As far as it being normal and expected in some places, I'm very aware of that, but I was asking more about places where that is not the case, as I qualified in my OP.

They were a band in the late 90s early 00s that basically incorporated live sex shows/public nudity into their live shows. I never actually saw them, but there was quite a lot of salacious reporting dressed up as scandalised moralising about them around the time.
There was a UK band called Hawkwind in the 70s where, I heard, at one concert some girl jumped up on stage, stripped off her clothes, and danced naked. They liked her enough that they hired her and from then on she was part of the show.

It depends on the time and place.

If I was older and American and had been to one of those crazy music festivals in the late 1960s or early 1970s, chances I would have seen much public nudity. If I went into the city for a walk this afternoon, what are my chances of seeing naked people casually walking around Melbourne's streets and along the banks of the Yarra River? Not very likely at all.

A few that come to mind:

- Camping out in the bush with a couple of dozen people, extended friends group who didn't all know one another, borderline between "public" and "private". Some folk would walk around nude or topless, particularly on their way to/from bathing.
- Concert with an audience of about 2000 people. The singer is known for being pretty casual about clothing, and if memory serves she was topless with not much more on below the waistline; I think her map of Tasmania was covered up but that was about it.
- Occasional streakers on TV sports, not that I watched it much.
- Occasionally in things like Pride marches, maybe? Though mostly people are wearing something there, even if it's not covering the genitals.

It's not something I'd expect to see in everyday life. Most of the time it's either too cold or too sunny to make nudity an appealing idea.

It's been known to happen. I have this one on a concert DVD somewhere:

I'm frequently nude in public...there are more opportunities for it when you're on the coast and in a warm climate like Sydney , Australia. Nude beaches, secluded bays, popular beaches late at night in the summer, quiet rock pools, hotel windows... I've paraded myself in all manner of situations, and have seen others doing the same, many times. 😎

Last year I went to a nude beach for the first time. So yeah, I've been fully naked in public as well. And at 27 years old at the time I wasn't the youngest there either.
Can't wait for the weather to be good enough to go again.

While on vacations I've seen people standing naked under a waterfall for example. I haven't yet seen any people having sex in public.

Thing is in Europe...the sun comes out as do the tits?

Walk on any Spanish or French beach and there are naked breasts everywhere?

Off a beach no. On a beach yes?

Who hasn't gone skinny dipping with friends after drinking too much?

Have you seen it, other than in a place where it is expected, like a nude beach or something?
Apart from places such as saunas and nude beaches in 40+ years of careful observation, the only times I have seen people naked in public were a mass skinny dip at university and a body-painting competition in Sydney.

It is hard to know whether it is more/less common. I think that people are more accepting of nudity per se and thus full/partial nudity is more frequent in "allowed" places such as beaches, but about the same, practically non-existent, in other public settings.

Phones with cameras are probably something of a discouragement.

The occasional topless/nude protest suggests that there is still some power to shock.

I think it's a common phenomenon that if you incorporate something into your life, you suddenly become aware of how many more people are doing it than you previously thought. Haulover's experience is a perfect example of that. He knows what to look for and where to look for it. I'm much kinkier in my thoughts and habits than I used to be, and I'm much more attuned to how much weird kinkiness is out there than when I was a young man. I see a rope or a ping pong paddle now and I think, "Hmmmm."

Much fiction tends to focus on dramatics. Slice of life stuff is well and good if done well, but things that don't happen to everybody all the time is often good fodder for ideas. I've (thankfully - knock on wood) never seen a murder, but I know they happen, so it doesn't require a huge suspension of disbelief when I read a story that features it.

I haven't seen much public nudity either. I've seen a bit. I've done a bit. Some of the stuff in my stories is inspired by real experiences - though in many cases taken to an extreme. I don't doubt it's being done whether I see it all the time or not.

One time way back in my security officer days, I caught two men and two women naked and cavorting in an apartment pool late at night. All having fun, buzzed but not drunk, consensual activity. The women were making out in the deep end against the wall while the guys treaded water nearby and cheered. They weren’t being that loud, but it was after three in the morning and the pool was closed. So I did my job, asked them to exit the pool, and take things inside. They complied. I was glad to witness their happiness, almost sorry I had to do my duty. From their smiles at my courtesy, I think they knew.

Anyone been to Burning Man
Public nudity is shall we say tame
speaking of… Burning Man is on my bucket list. Any event which is so rooted in freedom of expression, sexual and otherwise, is worth my time. Although i understand its getting to be quite a “thing” just to attend.

It used to be a lot better before the upper crust discovered it
You have to go with an open mind and be prepared for the elements
It’s not for everybody

My experiences with public nudity/sex:
1) There is a bicycle parade in the U.S. put on annually by New Belgium brewery and it is highly encouraged to wear costumes. I have been several times and almost always there is a couple of girls topless but they have body paint.
2) not sure if this can be considered public sex, but one time I fucked my girlfriend in her car in front of my house. It was late at night.
3) I have been skinny dipping with my wife
4) I have not personally participated but there is a race in TX call the Bare As You Dare 5K race. Runners can take off as much clothing as they want. Not sure I would want to run with my balls bouncing all over, sounds painful.
5) a couple of times I have received a hand job while driving a car, sadly, never a blow job though

Intrigued. Sorry another question. Upper crusts, do you mean the posh people of upper echelons.

How have they changed it? By commercialising it?

They will fly there servants into set up there camps and prepare there meals
Everything it not supposed to be
Money is no good there except to get in and coffee and tea
Everything else is gifted or bartered
We have been four times

You don't see it except in rare cases, because public nudity (outside of known nude beaches or resorts) is not advertised.

My wife and I are nudists, going to nude resorts to work on our tans about once or twice per year. And curious as she is, she looked up the state law concerning public nudity. Where we live, public nudity is NOT illegal. It's only illegal if it's lewd, provocative, or offensive to those around you. So, with discretion (ie. not advertising), skinny-dipping in the lake is not illegal.

So, she has an annual tradition on the same day every year of inviting just the female members of our family to join her for an evening dip sans bathing suits. Two years ago, when they were in the water, five of them swimming naked, a fishing boat came into the cove and three fishermen were talking to them (in the dark). My wife had called out to them so they would know there were swimmers there. After a few minutes of talking, she mentioned to the three 20-something year old guys that the women in the water were all nude. When one guy said he'd like to join them, she replied "Ah, that's not a good idea. One of us is only 14-years old!" He replied "Oh. I guess we'll be going now. It's been nice talking to you."

It's rare to you, because you don't know when or where my wife feels like doing it. And she'll never tell you ahead of time.

EDIT: And BTW, Key West during Fantasy Fest each year has some public nudity. Although it's illegal, even during Fantasy Fest, for some of those costumes and body paintings, the police have to look close to see that a woman is actually naked. And with the thousands of people in the streets, they don't look too close. I saw a woman once who LOOKED like she was wearing a cat costume. But looking a little closer, she was body painted, and wearing a furry tail butt plug.
