September Film Challenge ๐ŸŽฌ

Nathan of the most annoying username took the first and probably truest choice. But this is definitely in the mix. Cary Grant deserves every bit of icon status heโ€™s got .
Wait your favorite is โ€œItโ€™s a Wonderful Lifeโ€ as well? The movie where a guy is gifted the CEO position of a local bank, has the coolest and most beautiful wife, an incredibly devoted family, an amazing if slightly run down house, is beloved by the entire town and throws himself a 120 minute pity party, while being a complete douche to everyone who loves him? That movie?

You bring up a lot of valid points but it's a holiday tradition ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ Not a very good excuse but it is an excuse!

Itโ€™s a particularly ungenerous interpretation of the movie.

And yet gets the short end of every stick, crushed down by the universe until the end. It is like a Kafka story with a happy ending. There is one scene I like in the entire movie, with Marry hiding behind the bush, is delightful and wonderful until they punch George in the nuts yet again at the end. I hate that movie.

Day 3 - Favorite movie pre-1970

Not my favorite film, as I used that last time, and I am attempting to not repeat. But Cyrano de Bergerac is one of my favorite plays of all time, and the 1950 film version, with Josรฉ Ferrer, is a joy to me as well. Ferrer was a revelation, perfectly embodying Cyrano's joy, arrogance, intelligence, and courage-- panache, a word first introduced to English in the play --as well as all of his fears, self-doubts, bitterness, and insecurities. Cyrano is a polymath, a skilled leader, a ferocious duelist, a masterful poet, and a gifted playwright. But he is, at the same time, cripplingly insecure because of his comically large nose, something he is unable to look past, so he assumes everyone else cannot as well.

Cyrano is in love with his distant cousin, Roxane, but refuses to tell her because he assumes he will be rejected for his looks. But he changes his mind and decides he will confess to her after she calls on him to visit. Instead, Roxane informs him she has fallen in love with Christian, a soldier in Cyrano's guard command, to whom she has never spoken. He is heartbroken, yet Cyrano vows to help her. He meets Christian and finds him to be sweet, pretty, but not bright. So Cyrano writes to Roxane in Christian's name, pouring out his own heart in words which she finds irresistible. She wants to talk to her love at last, leading to the well-known scene of Cyrano hiding in the dark, telling Christian the words to win the heart of the woman Cyrano loves on the balcony above. It gets complicated from there...

The film went into the public domain years ago, so it can be found legally free on the Internet. Watch the original, black and white version -- the colorized version of any film should be a crime, and there is a black and white corner of Hell waiting for the man who created the process.

Here is the opening dueling scene. You get a feel for the strengths of Cyrano, which makes his weaknesses so much more interesting.

This is one of the best love triangles ever created. It is sweet, tragic, beautiful, sad, and wonderful--everything a good love story should be. Add in sword fights? Oh, yes...

Cyrano de Bergerac, (1950).

So you hate it because bad things happen to George? I hate it because George is a bitch.

Oh, no, I hate it. And bad things happen to George. Yes, the universe nut punches him, constantly. But he cannot even be happy with the wonderful things he does get, like family, a loving wife, and great kids, things people would be overjoyed at. You nailed it.

George Bailey is a bitch.
