Snippetsville: General Discussion

Group 1 editing/proofreading feedback please

I'd like to know how you felt about the editing/proofreading you've been doing this week for the SG.

Any positives?
Any negatives?
How did you feel the time was for you personally?
Did you have any problems with contacting each other?

Please add any other comments you'd like us to know. Please don't be afraid to speak out if you feel there's things in this editing/proofing system that could be done better. I'm always open to change where it's going to be an improvement. :)

Thanks.

(huge storm about to hit here. may not be able to be online for next couple of days. will stay in touch whenever possible and will check my PMs and email when the storm allows.)

I hope the others are in accord; I found it a very painless experience. I credit my colleagues (Pierce, Carrie and Alex) with that. We communicated easily, well and promptly. I just sent WSO our edited text and it's only Thursday, tho I guess Friday for her.

I'm in the next group due to MG's dropping out, and expect just as good an experience

Perdita

I'd endorse Perdita's comments. For me, the editing was fairly quick and painless, but a lot of that was due to the quality of the original submissions (thanks, guys and gals).

What Perdita didn't say was that we decided to do our edits cyclically, in that the first member of the four did an edit on the four stories and passed it on to the second, who edited and passed on to the third, who edited and passed to the fourth, who correlated the edits and passed the edited scripts to Central Control (alias me and WSO) (yes, I'm wearing two hats this time). The next bunch of stories we edit, we start with last time's second and finish with last time's first, and so on - I hope that makes sense, if it doesn't think 1234, 2341, 3412, 4123, 1234, etc.

It's the first time, so the system may need tweaking, but that's our problem.

Belated comment

Soupwarsproject,

sorry it's taken me so long to get around to saying something about your Snippetts. Your characters seem frighteningly real to me, probably because your writing makes them alive and they're the stuff of suburban nightmares. Nice work.

Champagne1982,

nice one, Carrie. I loved the twist in the tail. More, please.

Rhinoguy,

keep going . . .

I have a couple of part-finished tales myself. Must get them finished.

Issue four of 'Tales' has been submitted, so fingers crossed, people. A bit of a staccato post, this, but I've been busy. Actually working for money, for a change. It hurts after a whole summer off.

Alex

Alex: If they seem real, its because they are composites of our friends from the Cities. All two members of SWP live in a small rural suburb of 711, so it all came about as a matter of observation for Vas

Cheers,
The SWP

Alex please help me because I have no idea what you mean with the number thing. lol ;)

I was just assuming each Group would take the next four stories in the 600 word story thread and go through them with a fine tooth comb. I'll hand out the four stories to be worked on, to the leader of each Group. The leader then hands out the stories to each Group member. Once the edit/proofreading/critique has been completed, they hand the story back to the Leader who gathers them together then sends them to me. Right?

rhinoguy awesome work. I'm looking forward to reading your story. :)

to all
I would just like to say that the editing and proofreading appears to be going relatively smoothly so far.

I have deliberately passed on stories to the original authors without letting the author know who exactly has done the editing on their story.

Several authors have PMed me to thank the Editors, so, on the authors' behalf, Thank You. :)

Changing the subject, how are the Masquerade Ball stories coming along? The end of the month is nigh... ;)

Issue 4 is posted!

Heads up, guys and gals - Issue 4 is posted! Voting figures - if any, lol - after I change persona...

:p Hi - just back from my holiday - and riddled with some flu like virus.

OK I am around and will do my bit of proofreading and editing I see I am rostered for the week beginning October 12.

Now for a question that has probably been asked and answered - times and dates What Local time do we work to?

Now for a little side issue is any one else from the UK taking part in the BBC's Cantabury Tales Competition?

jon:devil:

jon,

not the Canterbury Tales Competition, but there's a fair few of us trying NaNoWriMo - see Tatelou's thread in the Hangout.

Alex

Alex,

I too have signed up for November "NaNoWriMo" I downloaded some flyers to take into the library etc.

Re-read the Cantabury Tales rules and discovered by the BBC's definition I am a professional writer and ineligeble - Now I can write an even raunchier version of the same story.

Do I take it that if everybody is signing-up to write 50K word novels in November. The journal keepers of Snippetsville will be on a collective sabatical?

No, but we'll be busier than a one-armed paperhanger.

Welcome to the Snippettsville Group. I hope you enjoy your stay! :)

Thanks for signing in on the Legal thread and posting your first Snippettsville story. :) I'm looking forward to reading more. Have you caught up with the Masquerade Ball yet? PM me if you haven't, I'll send you the basic details. :)

To All:

How are the Masquerade Ball stories coming? I see some up already. There's only two weeks to go to the deadline authors. If you haven't thought up a story yet, it's time to think now. :)

(sharing news: Yay I'm over the moon. The new printer I bought a couple of months ago has been playing me merry hell. Not one single page has it printed correctly. Now you would think that a person who has reformatted a hard drive (with help) could sure sort out a printer eh. Not this one. I was going insane with this piece of plastic that wouldn't do what I wanted it to do. So, I took it into the repair shop last week. Turns out that the printer head was faulty! *wso dancing a cool jig around the study!* Yay, it wasn't anything I did to it! Got a new one coming soon all the way from across the ditch! Sorry, got carried away with the glee there for a moment. Back to your normal station.... /sharing news)

Leave for the summer, get a website up and running over the fall, come back to the boards and SEE what has happened. :tears, squeaky, cracking voice:

It's just so beautiful...You guys are awesomely amazingly wonderful x 10! If I may, I'd love to be a part of this.

When I left there was one thread, with some cool stories and the thought of moving it to another more suitable area. When I came back there's this massive project that's involved more blood, sweat and tears than I'd like to think about. Kudos!!

I ended up, over the last two days, going through every last piece of information written, and I think i have a handle on what's going on. I've resigned myself to missing the ball :sniffle: but life may yet go on. I don't have a story ready yet, but I'll be happy to take part in the editing process, etc. as the schedule permits.

You guys rocking fuck! errr...

Welcome, Otus! We haven't met but I'll say it's a pleasure per your post. Quite an entrance.

Max S: I enjoyed your first snipps, clever and fun, look forward to reading more.

Rhino: glad you're here too, good first snipps, hombre.

Pierce, wherever you are: very much enjoyed your latest too.

Vas: you already know I love yours, and hope to collaborate in some way. Maybe at the ball?

Sweets, a *hug* of course.

anon all, Perdita :rose:

Welcome to the SG Night owl :) Tis good to see you back. Glad you've come to join us. Sorry there's a lot of info to read through. Please, if there's anything you need to know, just either ask in here or PM myself or Alex, or any member for that matter. :)

Hey are you any good with artwork? We could do with some more for future Issues. I tried begging rhinoguy, but he went and got all wordy on me. :p

You've got plenty of time to get a Masquerade Ball story up. Heck, it's only 600 words dear. Closing date is the 31st of October. Get writing!

*giggling*

Vars and Perdita at the ball... Oh grief, now that's going to be an interesting read I've no doubt. :D

Well met, Perdita. Thanks for the welcome! *blink* That sounded all messed up. :)

Wild! Good to see ya. Must say, I was completely amazed at how organized and determined a group of people can be, without promise of compensation. The amount of material is absolutely great, really a sturdy foundation to build upon.

Artwork...well...you see...Yes and no. I used to have what we like to call "a decent computer that ran things." Now I can't even get The Gimp to work properly...*laughs* Give me a few days, I'll see if I can't come up with something. That's not a promise.

You're right though... *blinks* Maybe I can whip something for the ball up. Funnnn...the butterflies accompanying a deadline begin to make their home in my gut. :)

teehee...well now that I've read the backclick triggers posted in the AH, i must say...that all of my stories, posted and unposted, should be torn to little shreds before they're viewed by any living soul...*grumbles something about smut snobs, yet continues to take it personally*

*L* Loves ya guys,

Max and Otus, welcome to the madhouse

I hope you enjoy your stay.

Max, a very nice first offering - told you it was fun, didn't I?

Rhino - soon as you have a name for the business, I'll change the map key.

Soupwars - another good offering.

Anyone I've missed - sorry! I'm tired. I just realised I have to get my Masquerade Ball piece done. Not to mention sort out the characters for my NaNoWriMo effort, do some self-editing on a piece I promised someone, prepare some seminar material for work, get issues 5 and 6 of the 'Tales' ready for submission . . .

Alex

Hey all. Sorry to bug, but what's everyone thinking for lighting inside the lodge (for the ball)? Warmish, brighter light, or cool dimly lit...? I have no preference, but if anyone's already written this into their stories, please share!

Thank you much,
~Otus
