The Nerd Herd!

*Blusters like Pooh on a windy day*

Abuh! Overwrought?! Melodramatic?!

Oh bother...

Amy seems pretty enough, but I don't know her as well as I have gotten to know Rose...

$80+ bucks for a season doesn't help make me want to know much either.

Stupid freaking 'considered an import' loophole!

I know the feeling, on the price thing. And for whatever reason, the single series box set is more expensive than buying the two half season boxes... and even then it's ridiculously expensive. But I still buy them, like a schmuck. :D

As for Amy, I like her the most because she actually has a really decent character arc, rather than just being a jealous, lovestruck sociopath like Rose could be at times. And Karen Gillan's a better actress. But that's just my opinion, I won't take the Rose love from anyone else. She'll be showing up in my creepy fanfic, at any rate. ;)

I'll be waiting....creepy fanfic with the girl who waited? Yay!

Mom, I've been invited to a lemon party!

I love the rebooted doctors but these new companions totally suck for the most part. They're all pretty with kinda fake dysfunctions layered on them. Give me a Leela or an annoying kid or some slime-based or holographic weirdo tagging along any day. The one thing you could always rely on was that you were not watching a soap.

i've been a Lord of the Rings devotee for over 20 years now, and i'm also an airline employee. i'll admit it - i teared up while watching that!

when Fellowship hit the movie theatres, it was literally like someone had brought my dreams to life.

I concur. Not such a fan of the new companions. I miss the ones like Sarah Jane, and of course, K-9. :)

Yeah, I've been quietly hoping for an alien companion for quite a while. Or some form of A.I, or... really anything other than a contemporary English woman. ;)

Still like Amy, though :D

In unrelated news, any Evangelion fans among the Nerd Herd? Specifically, anyone reading the spoilers for the new movie, and being really weirded out by what they're seeing?

Guess I'll chime in and add myself officially to the nerd herd :p

The main focuses of my nerdom are in anime and RPGs, both VG and pen-and-paper varieties. I enjoy a lot of other types of video games, sci-fi themes, fantasy themes, manga...the list goes on for a while so I'll just leave that to soak in for now until other stuff comes up.

As for Eva, asking if people are disturbed by what is coming is rather silly, considering just how fucked up what we already have is. I've skipped on the spoilers for now, though, so maybe GAINAX really has managed to outdo themselves. Or maybe you mean disturbing to the effect of "Well, that WAS interesting until THAT happened."

The most enjoyable anime I've seen recently is "Puella Magi Madoka Magica", which was introduced to me (amusingly enough) by a straight male acquaintance of mine. Don't let its pretense as a "Magical Girl" genre show fool you though. It is not only a dark subversion of the genre, but a well thought-out and meaningful one. Adding more detail would be spoilerish, though.

So, I have the new Google Nexus tablet. About the only thing I don't like about it is it has no vibrate function. That, and they continue to not put keyboards on these things :D

Anybody play with the alternate OS's like Ubuntu for Android?

I meant disturbed in an "everything I'm currently reading sounds like a parody of Evangelion, rather than an actual Evangelion product" way. :D And then it turns out that everything I read was actually true, and... well, I'll have to see it. It's unexpected, at the very least.

Actually, straight dudes are generally considered a regular part of the audience for magical girl shows like that. Part of it's the perv value- which is a bit creepy, but whatever- but the Moe genre attracts a lot of heterosexual male fans in Japan, and has quite a following in the West, too.

Puella itself is great, and the narrative is well told enough that I'd recommend it to anyone, straight or not. Very much worth picking up, just... maybe not the movies, too.

Second Higgs possibility pops up in CERN data

Isn’t that just typical? Science waits half a century for a Higgs boson, and when it arrives, just like a bus, a second one is right behind.

That’s the tantalising prospect raised by the most recent release of data from the Large Hadron Collider scientists, who had barely finished celebrating after confirming that they’d spotted the elusive particle.
For the Twue Nerd, there's more in the story linked through the headline. The casual nerd will probably be satisfied with just this graphic. ;)
