Okay... this one was originally mildly amusing in concept, but the principal's reaction makes it at least a chuckle.

Hackers Attack Taylor Swift Show

Internet trolls have hijacked an online contest that could send current Kennedy paramour Taylor Swift to a school for the hearing impaired in Allston to perform for the kids there, but the principal at the Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing isn’t exactly singing their praises.

-=-=-=-=

“We would have the concert beautifully translated into American Sign Language, invite many other children in the Boston Public Schools who are deaf or hard of hearing and open it up to the hearing world as well,” said the principal.

He said many of the students at the K-12 school have access to music and can feel the vibrations and hear some pitch sounds. However, the school doesn’t have a music department.

“We would absolutely use the prize money to make some musical accommodation for the students,” said Ford, adding that the school has been without a music teacher for some time.

“If the school wins, it would be very cool,” laughed the principal.

File Under: Not So Swift.
More, as usual, in the original Boston Herald article linked through the headline above.

Watching a good documentary about linguistics while having breakfast.
Looking for a new apartment.
And most importantly, my red chili pods are starting to ripen!

Care to share the name of the documentary? Assuming it's available in English, that is.

I have the nicest landlords, ever; they live out of the country and I've never actually met them. We've always handled everything (including HVAC replacement and tree felling adventures) by email.

I wrote her a note earlier today, explaining the [temporary] financial situation I'm in, explaining that I don't intend to fall behind on rent, but things are going to be very difficult for the next little bit until I can find a way to increase my income to meet new demands (I'm already doing targeted interviews, networking, blahblahblah).

She wrote back saying they're dealing with some setbacks of their own, and not to worry - we'll put our heads together when she's in town and work something out. We're women; we have to stick together.

This made me smile! ^^^^

I'm so happy that you finally have a happy ray of sunshine beaming onto you!
:rose::)

My daughter (now 23) has a friend from high school who has been out since their junior year, and deeply involved with another nice young woman who is a year older. My daughter's friend is a VERY talented set designer (they met doing theater stuff) and a damn fine costumer as well. I got to meet her through some costuming adventures.

She and her girlfriend have been together through thick and thin, and this year they decided that they wanted to have a child. They asked a friend if he would be the donor (all in a clinical setting) and he agreed. She found out today that she IS pregnant, on the first try! I'm absolutely thrilled for them, as is my daughter. :)

Apparently, it's "heap praises on Bunny" week for my writing/SEO clients. I'm almost ashamed of how giddy the nice things they say about me and my work make me.

Key word: "almost."

Don't let it get past there. You've earned the nice things they say about you and your work, and thus you've earned the giddiness.

Now...... get back to work, so you can hear more nice things and get even more giddy! ;)

Certainly! It was The Grammar of Happiness. Here's a trailer.

It's a documentary about the famous Everett vs. Chomsky dispute over the universal grammar, recursion and Pirahãs. I've been following the umm.. "exchange" Everett's statements about the special features of Pirahã have caused in the academic world since 2008 when I first heard about it, and this documentary sums it all up pretty nicely. I'm pretty appalled, to say the least.

I don't completely agree with the computational method they used there, because mathematically speaking it's hardly sound evidence (and they don't say the results are definite), but Chomsky's reaction to it was very telling.

I've been slightly put off by Chomsky for years, but ever since I started to pay attention to this particular case, I've pretty much become anti-chomskian. I mean, that's not how the academic world is supposed to work, and clearly Chomsky and his fan boys are the bad guys here.

EDIT: I mean, ok, the documentary isn't exactly balanced and neutral, and I'm not exactly balanced and neutral because I don't like the god-like stance Chomsky has in the field of linguistics. Stupid things have been done by both sides of the dispute, especially early on. But yeah, definitely worth watching.

Driving to school my son asked what kind of sandwich I made him. I said turkey and chees. I got the. " you're the best mom ever" comment.

Awwww. I used to make mine ham and cheese like he requested until a teacher pulled me aside and told me he throws his sandwich away every day and goes to play. I still give him a hard time about it and he's 17.

Thanks for the link. It appears that the film is not available on Netflix yet so it may be a while before I catch it.

In some ways, Chomsky's mind was god-like - especially in his very early work. Like many geniuses, though, he burned out early and then decided that he could apply his mind with equal skill to every other world problem outside of linguistics.

It's also available on YouTube, if you don't mind a bit lower quality.

Edit: no more linguistic blabber. :)

I am worn out. Next time I pipe up and offer to chair some non-profit committee, no matter how noble the cause, somebody slap me.

See how tired I am? I posted in the wrong thread and I'm not even going to move it or apologize, so there!

You're just trying to keep your negativity post points low and positivity post points high, because negativity just doesn't suit you. :)

You'll feel great about what you've done for a noble cause once your worn-outness wears out!
