For every claw?

I've thought one for every tail is pretty hardcore already. I can never keep up.

I did learn some new snapsvisor for just the occasion. I still have to print out the lyrics, although J's protesting already. He ain't gonna sing, he says. (Yes he will, after the first two akvavits anyways.)

I'm gonna be a sad panda, if we don't catch enough crayfish today. Oh, and I'm making Västerboten pie for the first time. :)

Well, I didn't say it was a good idea. It will make you forget most anything though.:D

Mm, now I want crayfish and Västerbotten pie!
How do you catch them? Cages or just picking them?

With the cage-y traps, I don't know what they're called. Using cat food as bait. :D

Edit: Just got the message that the traps are out of water, and we have 43 crayfish ready to go in the pot. Not hugely many, but ok for 4 people. :)

Congratulations, sounds like the party is safe!

I wish it was cool enough here for meals like this... :(

Seriously!!!!! I've been promising to make my chicken enchilada casserole, but yesterday's high was 117. Even though it's the weekend and a/c is less expensive to run, it just seems mildly insane to turn on the oven. I need to find the plans I have stashed for a solar oven, it should work like a charm for the next few days.

1. Locate a flat paved or concrete surface, preferably away from heavy traffic.
2. Place dish to be cooked on surface in Step 1 between the hours of 8 am and 8 pm.
3. Cover dish with a large pot or dutch oven.
4. Remove dish when it's done.

There...fixed that for ya. ;)

A baking chemistry puzzle

I do not, in any way, profess to be a cooking scientist, but I do understand most of the basics. So please, can someone explain to me the purpose of baking soda in this recipe for a cheesecake crust?

1 c almond meal
1/2 c slivered almonds
1/4 c sugar
1/4 tsp fine sea salt
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/4 c butter, melted

Cheesecake crusts tend to be on the dense side and solid enough to keep the batter contained during baking. So why would one want a rise from it?

Oh, and MWY, that was good!

Elle - I love your little heart shaped cantaloupe :) and I had to look up za'atar - thanks! Meatballs look so yummy!

I'm planning on making chicken enchiladas tomorrow!

Yeah, it's too hot, but I had a craving.

Za'atar is some thing we use a lot of. I cannot imagine life with out it. I like buying others' mixes, I like missing my own. I adore sumac, ( it might be my favourite spice) and so the flavour for this is perfect. It it a great alternative to wet dip for crudite ( which we eat a lot of). I'm prepared to dip pickled lemons in it, ( though it kills the sum ac taste a bit) but not everyone is a lover of that taste so much. :). For me the combination of lemon/citrus and thyme ....what ever cuisine it turns up in, is pretty delicious.

And CANTALOUPE thank you!

I have sumac, and like it, so am pleased to learn about za'atar. It has to get in line behind the chocolate ginger cake :p but I will try it!

And you could always post in some other language and let us Google :D

The pumpkin seed- not-quite- brittle  is now with lovely, lovely Daisy and her friendly Master and the very wonderful Malich, at the fair we meg at today. A man who cracked whips liked it very much. It only the brittle had cracked as well :D. I explained pumpkin seed it very good for sperm thus as far as I was concerned was appropriate kinky gift.

Fantastic! Never knew that about pumpkin seeds :D Glad your brittle went to a good home.

I have been off cooking for a while but Master inspires me so tonight I made sezchuan aubergine and mushroom foo yung.
Followed by nectarine surprise. :)
