Which brings up the question, how badly do people on the site generally get offended when stories make religious people look bad? I'm guessing more in LW than elsewhere, but still. I don't see much of that here.

What I don't get is the idea that other people should get to decide that what I do is a "sin". Or that my soul needs praying for (that was a relationship that went downhill fast).

It really depends. There’s a general rule regarding politics and religion that prevents screeds from getting posted, but there are plenty of stories where religious people can/do act deplorably. I’ve done it myself; one of the characters’ backstories in Grace Restored is about being molested by a youth pastor and the church (including her parents) backing him instead of her. Attacking zealots or hypocrites seems to go over fine, even in LW; attacking religion does not.

I might find that a hard line to hew to. I might have to avoid it entirely.

I did actually include a screed in my first story here. It was a screed on the benefits and morality of nudism, but it was still a screed (in what I think is otherwise an excellent story). It's the one thing I have on here that makes me cringe now.

You've reminded me of my first epiphany: I was in second grade in Catholic school, and they were preparing us for our First Communion. The nun explained how I was supposed to go into the little confessional and tell my sins to some guy in the dark, through a screen. I remember thinking, no fucking way!, or the seven-year-old equivalent. And I didn't even have any sins yet.

But I liked being an altar boy. Got to get out of catechism class to do funerals. Got to ride in a limo.

My wife likes telling her story about just finishing catechism class and taking her first communion at not quite 8 years old, like you were. After taking the blessing and the priest making it clear about "the blood of Christ" and "the flesh of Christ", she gagged, ran out of the church, and proceeded to vomit on the sidewalk, soiling her white dress and veil in front of her classmates. She says she wasn't all fired-up in the first place since it was her stepfather who insisted on the Catholic bit, but that whole trauma sealed the deal at her young age.

I didn't make it as far as confirmation. Mom's family was seriously big in The Church (8 kids!), but they were all 3000 miles away and didn't know that Mom was slacking off on attendance. She did cling to Doctrine for the duration of my childhood, to my detriment.

Somebody sending uninvited religious tracts is not doing it for themselves, they’re doing in hopes of benefiting the receiver. It’s hard to say that about the sender of a dick pick; such cretins are doing it for themselves.

I won't deny that people send dick pics for their own benefit, but I assume that at least some of them are convinced that the recipient is getting something out of it - either from the pic itself, or else from the hot sex that they'll come begging for after they've seen the sender's cock.

No, trust me, the religious proselytizers are doing it for themselves too. The more converts they get, the more admirable they are- that is how it works in some cults anyway. And I’m sure some of the folks who send dick pics think it’s for the recipient’s benefit too. This is something that depends on your perspective whether it’s to your benefit or not. To a religious proselytizer, it’s to my benefit and theirs that they’re spouting scripture. To me, the agnostic who helps people because I’m a good person, not for some phantom religious reward, it’s annoying and I am fine with telling them to save their breath.

It reminds me of a conversation I had with one of my daughter's friends who had embarked on the perilous journey of app dating. She was mulling over whether or not to agree to a second date with a certain guy and had made herself a list of his positive and negative traits. Under positive, she'd put "No dick pics so far". I couldn't help but laugh and commented how low women set the bar now, that not receiving such a thing is considered a positive. She looked confused at first, which annoyed me a little at the time.

I think it demonstrates a total lack of any ability to either communicate with another human being, or - perhaps more likely - to see women as being fully human.

I guess it’s sort of like this:

1. I’m a horny guy
2. I’d love it if some random woman on the internet sent me a nude photo
3. Therfore random women on the internet would probably appreciate me sending them a nude photo

Socrates would have been proud of the logic.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m pro-cock. I’d just prefer to select which one myself. And IRL is a lot more fun than a random photo.

Dick pics also feel a bit like marking territory or a peacock displaying its feathers. Thing is, peacock feathers are at least pretty.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I’ve never trawled the internet looking for random dick pics. And I say that as someone who enjoys porn.
