🧘🏼‍♂️🤾🏻‍♀️Getting Sweaty Again: The 3rd Circuit 🚴🏼‍♂️🏋🏼‍♀️

I’m so impressed with those who have kept going with the wall sit challenge! It’s so difficult
I stopped amid some heartache but figure rather than feeling sorry for myself, need to get back to it
So gonna resume at I think Day 4 or 5, may have to retreat back to Day 1 lol. Gonna add kettlebells, skip rope and kicks so may be unable to move in a few days lol

Good morning, Sweaters

What do you do when you are in a rut? When you are feeling stuck and it’s hard to pull yourself out? Needing some help. Throw me a life preserver please! 🛟

I tend to respond to things that help me see progress but I’ve hit a plateau and I’ve been there for a few months now. I think my goal needs to be strength rather than weight loss or distance run. Maybe a new goal will help me.

What have you done when you have felt .. lost?

I think what changes me up is swapping my goal, like you said. If I’m focused on strength growth I go for higher reps at my current level, if I’m doing cardio go for longer distance or faster base speed.

Also change you your entire routine, swapping from a strength to a cardio focus for a while, change the types of movements I’m doing to work new muscle sets

Definitely spice things up. Weight training is a great winter option. Consider finding a different routine for that. You’ll have totally different goals to work towards then.

I saw a video recently that was about changing your perspective rather than your goal. Instead of focusing on a "goal weight" focus on your "goal feeling".

Also, doing some sort of challenge helps keep me accountable. Wall sits might not be that for you, but if there's something you want more focus on, maybe switch things up and see what happens!

When I’m in a bit of a rut but enjoy what I’ve been doing, I like making consistency a challenge. How long can I go without missing a day or whatever my routine is? And I bribe myself along the way at certain milestones.

I’ve also found some really fun virtual challenges. Like when I was starting to walk on a walk pad after surgery in the middle of winter, I found a Harry Potter challenge where my progress unlocked fun things. And I could watch themed scenery while I walked each day.

Yeah I am thinking that if I change up my expectations, or what I’m aiming for, maybe that will make things more interesting.

I feel like I should be doing this anyway and I just haven’t been. I need to do more strength training. I was doing ok there for a while when I was going to Body Pump but it’s been a long time since I did that. Need to get back to it.

Love this. A goal feeling. That sounds like a more universally accessible ? for lack of a better term - goal. That is something that is an appropriate umbrella goal that everybody can shoot for.

I really like that.

A Harry Potter challenge?? That sounds fun. What other types did you find? I’m going to have to look for some. This is a fun idea :)

My kids and I played Poke’mon Go for a while. That got us up and outside and was something we could do together. Thats the only other one I’ve heard of though.

Love these ideas. Thank you!

Have you ever gone geocaching? I do that with my kids and they love it because it's a scavenger hunt and we get to play in the woods.

I've no incredibly amazing tips here, sometimes it's hard and doesn't go the way you want and that's just... well, hard. Oftentimes, I'll just acknowledge that. Like drop the anchor and kind of observe it without judgment or trying to fix it (both hard) for a hot minute.

Little tips and tricks, I don't know how well it translate to non-outdoors things (I'm sure it can though), but when the training runs get monotonous, I look for little sparks of awe in the mundane. Maybe it's the colour of the leaves, maybe it's the sound of running water, maybe it's just that my body is letting me do the thing I'm doing and that's pretty wild. I find it helps. Or I'll play a little game, like look for the colours of the rainbow in whatever, a blue car, a red door, an orange pylon, etc. Shit like that.

If it's about hitting some form of plateau for a bit, I try to remember it's not just about weight or strength or definition. Lots of people run to lose weight (sorry, it's my exercise of choice, so it's my go to example), but that's not always what happens. You might be running to lose weight, but you're getting stronger and gaining fitness, too, and that's a big deal. Sometimes the focus is so much on the one thing you wanted, you aren't noticing the other things as easily. There are probably a few other gains you've made that are huge wins.

Now make like that cat poster and hang in there, you got this! 💪

The bolded part above reminded me of some advice I got from my mom, actually. She was talking about focusing on the present, and not trying to take on too much at once, and to do that by noticing the details around you.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. :)

I have tucked my lovely bicycle into bed for the winter. I wish I could cycle in the cold weather but my bladder always gets inflamed, no matter how many layers I add.

Over the past 3 weeks I have managed to reach my goal distance of 20 kilometres in 50 minutes on my stationary bike every morning. Well, Mondays to Fridays.

Not bad for an old bird like me.

Signed up for a 5k. Then pushed daily to get my time better.

And I have a friend who has Challenge Groups for her MLM where we have to exercise daily, drink water, etc. Turns out I need someone to report to.

I have hired a personal trainer a couple of times too. Mostly to show me technique so I would try new equipment.
