1 in 4 Americans think the Sun goes around the Earth. Does it matter?

How does that 1 in 4 compare with the numbers who think:

Elvis is still alive?

They were abducted by aliens?

That their vote influences politicians?

That Russia is still the USSR?

That TV news gives the whole story?

Or the numbers who failed to reach an acceptable standard of literacy on leaving school? Those probably weren't counted because they couldn't complete the survey.

Similar figures could be obtained by 'survey' in almost any developed country. As for less developed countries? The figures could be far higher.

Ahhhhhhhhhh you forgot: The government owes me a living.

Well, astrology was practiced by Ron and Nancy, and he was the most Godly president in my lifetime.... So there!

and he never died his hair. Paul Harvey said so.

No, the evidence is a significantly lower rate of civilian gunshot deaths there than here.

Oh yeah - in the same way that very few people die from drowning in Central Africa because they don't have any water. Which doesn't mean that they're any safer from dying of course...

The shortfall of gun-deaths in Europe is not made up for by any surplus in knife-deaths or poison-deaths or whatever, if that's what you mean. Euros are simply safer from homicide than Americans are, that's all there is to it. There are other causes of death here and there, of course, but none relevant to this discussion.

Pointless, non sequitur(two words BTW)? You were pointing to a level of ignorance among our masses, course you left out the reason for it, the affliction of liberalism in today's educational process.

But, that is not the reason for it. If there are any anti-scientific (or even generally anti-intellectual) tendencies or pressures in American public education today, that's all and solely on the RW.

I was simply pointing to another example of this ignorance, your support for and belief in Obamunism. The understanding and worship in the divinity of Obama, and that all revolves around him. How is this popular form of ignorance on your part not on point?:D

Because whether one approves of the current Admin or not is completely irrelevant to whether one knows the Earth goes round the Sun. Mostly irrelevant, that is; but if there is any correlation at all, I daresay the ignorance of Copernican astronomy would more likely be displayed by those Americans who disapprove of Obama.

Ignorance was around long before liberals. Societies lip service to education as opposed to valuing education is the problem.

And, once again, the award for Most Pointless and Fatuous Nonsequitur of the Week goes to Grampa Urine! :)

As a cowardly Vietnam-era Marine, Grampa Urine is honor bound to attempt to deflect all discussion that hits a little too close to home to other safer subjects.

America's public education system centrally controlled in Washington DC is now more in the business of political indoctrination than the actual reading, writing, and arithmetic, aspects of "education." It's all about inclusiveness, diversity, the benevolence of the super state, the wonders of Socialism, the horrors of capitalism, and it's greedy capitalists.

Grampa Urine thinks EDUCATION BAD!

 Whatever. One thing it ain't is anti-scientific. Kids are being taught that the Earth goes round the Sun; it's just that some of them apparently are not listening.

Those in public schools or accredited private schools, that is. Who knows what the poor homeschool kids are being taught. :(

I merely used the European superstition concerning guns as another example of mass ignorance. A third example would be the Young Earth creationists. Regardless of our general level of education I doubt we'll ever be able to eradicate this type of ignorance completely...

I find 1/4 to be unbelievably high and I'm quite curious how precisely they phrased the question and under what conditions the test were given. I'd have no problem believing for example that 1/4 don't know what orbit means or at least not which which is orbiting when you say "The Earth orbits the sun" or "the sun orbits the Earth." I can also believe that if this was one of those tests either given to you by those people who mug you in the mall when you're trying to shop or any other circumstance that involves people just filling out random bubbles and trying to get to the end.
