Many of my people came from these woods but their bows were not unstrung and my gun is not unloaded. Please make sure you know what a deer is before you wind up shooting a cow.

Magica: You guessed my location. (What a surprise!) To answer your questions: 1) neither and 2) I enjoy eating at the Boatyard, but much to my regret, I wasn't there last Sunday.

Now to your riddle: Between "two areas of economic depression" Hmmmm? That describes most of upstate NY. I don't get anything out of that.

"Bad Hunters" - Sorry, nothing's coming to me. Not enough coffee this morning I guess.

"Many of my people came from these woods, but their bows are not unstrung" - Well, that sounds like some kind of hint to some tribal lands, but which one? I know of two that are within a couple of hours of me and the Alleghany Reservation is probably only three hours away. Could be any of those or one I haven't thought of.

I guess I'll have to ruminate on this one a little further. Any further hints would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I know the difference between a deer and a cow. Among other differences, deer just have teats (at least the female deer); cows have udders. I have also shot deer with my little bow and arrow.

Sorry... I suppose I am hard on it. Mostly because I work with people who are fairly negative about it, too? It's also not my home, therefore I have less affinity for it than others would. No doubt, some very good people here.

And we keep supplying NY and the northeast with gym teachers. Most of whom are very proficient in Beer Pong, as evidenced by the number of outdoor games I see set up in the spring and fall.

A while back, maybe in the70's I bought a shotgun from a fellow worker with the idea of going out hunting. well had that in the back of the closet for maybe 10 yrs before I sold theat "ITHICA DeerSlayer" wonder what I would have gotten for it today. I GAVE it away for $20.

upstate very regretably has become the appalachia of ny .I lived and survived the blizzard of '76 in buffalo.more than 100 fot drifts.but when it snows in western ny its by per inches per hour.and I spent time in syracuse and know route 13 and its winding roads and the falls extremely well.as for cortland be glad its part of the suny system and while you think it produces only physical ed teachers beware it also graduated the most teaching degrees of any suny school and trust me I am in a postion to know that fact.

I love ny but hate the politics .I live on the hudson river now and except for winter wouldnt trade places with anyone having moved almost 15 times in 25 years.

Aha, I've actually been to Pulaski but not Buffalo. Moosewood cookbooks are great but I didn't enjoy the meal I had there.

Your mention of the Deerslayer reminds me of the James Fennimore Cooper novel of the same name, which, as you may remember, takes place on Otsego Lake, which makes it somewhat relevant to our Central NY discussion. Anyway, the "Deerslayer" is what the Mohicans called Natty Bumppo (if I had a name like that I would adopt just about any nickname,too.) His enemies, the Hurons, called him "Les longs Carabine", or The Long Rifle. I always thought that if I were a porn star, that would be the name that I would use: "Les longs Carabine." Not that mine is especially long....my riftle, that is. I just like the name.

Of course, Natty's other nickname, "Hawkeye" was given by his parents to Hawkeye Pierce of M.A.S.H. fame.

Well, NYS Tourism calls it that because that's where Cooper's books, The Deerslayer, The Pathfinder, The Pioneers, and The Last of the Mohicans also known as "The Leatherstocking Tales", are set. Natty Bumppo (who obviously was a man of many nicknames) was known to the English settlers as "Leatherstockings" and all those novels feature him as the main character, which is why they collectively came to be known as The Leatherstocking Tales. Technically, a fifth novel, The Prairie is also considered a Leatherstocking Tale, but I believe that takes place further west. (I have not read that one.)

P.S. (And this is more useless information) Despite Cooper's title, the Mohicans did not die out: they moved to Wisconsin and changed their name to the Stockbridge Indians. They have a reservation just west of Green Bay. I know this because I had a wingmate in college who, in fact, was a Stockbridge Indian. I always thought it was kinda neat to be living with a Mohican.

Cable TV, in my vast mental repository of trivia, I remember reading that Cortland was one of the first Cable TV systems, except it was called CATV (Community Antenna TV) they only carried TV channels that were broadcast, but couldn't be received in the valleys.

love knowing useless information.lol I lived in cooperstown until a few years back but was raised in oneonta so cortland is a place I remember alot.yeah apples .I still frequent much of the leatherstocking area.and will be at a college meeting on the lake soon. the salmon must be getting ready to run on the black river.catch me a big one .what does any of this stuff have to do with lit anyway lol.

Have you all noticed the pick up in this thread lately WOW great and besides us sharing and having fun other that lurk also learn about us and our area.. If it went for the ones that run ( notice if you put an "i " in run, how it changes the word) have effected us. that is why we are looking to relocate - maybe TN for retirement . We looking for land now to set things up but yes I do love the area and most of the people here are the best but something happens when they get into office-- power--- controlling our everything
