The No. 2 pencil has always been so reliable. But sometimes I wonder: should I branch out, and employ a 2 1/8? Throw caution to the wind? I need more input.

I am not much help here with such an epic life altering decisions such as this, but I am suddenly curious about what ever happened to the No 1 pencil... I mean we never really hear about it anymore, you know?

I would stick with the reliable one. I am unsure that the stress involved in changing pencils would be worth it and who knows you might even need to take classes to become proficient in the use of a 2 1/8 pencil. Also think about the feelings of the No. 2 pencil.
