Hello everyone! Time to retire turned out to be more than I expected.
Retire as in Re-TIRE the bike. Found a great deal online with a Harley dealer and ordered my tired with no tac and no shipping charges. Local dealer said they would mount & bal for 10.00 big ones per tire. So I dropped the off and a day later they were waiting.
Now is where the fun begins.
For those that don't know ... I own a Heritage Springer. Those front ends are the most beautiful things going with all that chrome but they can be a pain too. They tend to be a little hard on the neck bearings so I need to keep them tightened to the right torque and greased with "Harley special lube" ... SOunds like a sales pitch to sell me a tube of overpriced grease. Okay I stopped whining and got what I needed. painstakingly polished all the spokes and checked the wheel for "true". The wheel was perfect ...BUT... The brake rotor was bent! not just a little runnout but BENT!
I measured it and took the heel back off... I call my dealer and he tells me to bring it in... Okay sounds good so far. When I get there they check it and it looks like they are ready to accept their mistake and make me whole again.
I'm forced to wait for a couple hours till the owner decides ... When he finally talkes to me he starts out by telling me he is certain they didn't damage the rotor....BUT they are going to get me a new one! Good ! Then he goes on and on about how he knows I've been riding on the bent rotor because he can see its warped for a long time! I try to remain calm ...but basically this guy is just calling me a lier! I asked if he checked the runnout and reminded him I did. Told him the bike CANNOT be ridden on the bent rotor but was ridable before they touched it. I decided to just shut up at that point cause i was getting more pissed by the minute. He even had the nerve to tell me I threw my wheels in my trunk and bent the rotor! Oh yes ... I forgot to include there was a prick punch mark on the end of the rotors edge. Looks like they pryed against it or dropped it! I showed this to the owner but he still blamed me.
I bit my tongue and held my breath till they got me a new rotor ( $105.00)
Put it all together and now i'm ready to let the bike down off the jack. When it hits the ground the rear tire goes flat! I pulled the valve cap and see the core looks funny. I take up a turn and it doesn't feel right... Then I hear ..."SNAP!"
The core broke inside the stem! This is a brand new tube!
Well I figured the best i can do is to get away from it and go to bed... Things seem to look better in the morning.
The next day I dug out my trusty old tool for chasing valve step threads and went to work. The little pointed end did its job and managed to get the remains of the old core out of the tube ! I got a new one and was back in business! Now just so you fully undersatnd the gravity of this... This is the rear wheel and its a huge pain to get the belt tension reset besides the lost time and pain of bringing the tire back to my very friendly dealer.
I can't help but wonder what kind of job they do on other customer bikes?

Well the trama is over ... the bike is back on its own rubber and loooking fine with the engraved whitewalls.

Now if the weather holds out I think I desearve an all day ride to forget my fun at the dealership...

Seems like taking pride in your work no longer applies... now its just get the customers money... At least I didn't have to buy the new rotor...The fact he gave me a new one tells me the owner knows they are responcible even though he blamed me for it.

Just a hello to Jaded and the crew. I used to drop by here occasionally...it's still a friendly place, and I still don't have my own two-wheeler.

But...gas prices have had the benefit of letting me see the other side of a whole lot of weekend riders at work who now haul their work clothes in their bags and ride everything you can imagine - Harleys, v-stars, Goldwings... Our parking lot of SUV's and pickups and Camrys has a whole 25 stall row devoted to bikes. Sigh. Like a candy store.

Good afternoon, everyone...

I honestly don't know how life has gotten so busy...

I spent most of the day downstairs in the basement separating what I am planning on taking with me to North Mass and what I want to get rid of at the tag sale. I am accumulating quit a pile for the tag sale. I look at it as less I have to move. If I haven't used it in oh lets say a years time I don't need it...

For those that haven't figured it out yet. Harleygrrl is my ol'e lady and I'm her ol'e man... We will be move'n into together over the next couple of months in the Mass/VT area. Very pretty country. Very pretty lady... Yeah, she's a keeper. No longer advertising for a back rest got one. Or until she want to get up on two wheels herself. An believe me I got the better of the bargain on this deal..............

I have a call into my good friend Joey (my meat guy) and waiting his return call. I want to order some burger (8oz. extra lean), 5 lbs of hot dogs (natural case), and a 5 lbs block of Land O Lakes sliced white American cheese. I will also place my order for the chili contest in Sept. of 6 lbs of tri tip and 16 lbs of ground lean beef in a course grind or chili grind which ever you prefer. Going to be up there at the house with my honey Labor Day weekend. Neither one of us has had much time to relax an at BBQ of burgers and dogs.

NYWings, sorry to hear about the dilemma at the Harley dealership. But you are one hundred percent correct. Pride in workmanship has taken a back seat to greed. It's no longer about pleasing the customer it's all about making that almighty buck. A lot of companies seem to have forgotten that it is really the customer that signs everyone's pay check there. Without the customer he's just another grease monkey standing around holding both cheeks of his ass in his hands. All you needed to do was ask to see the work order. A good tech. would have made a note about the bent or warped brake rotor. When I was a service manager and if he didn't make note on the work order and the customer complained...! Then the tech bought the rotor because the customer is ALWAYS right. It's all a matter of how you run your shop. Shame on the tech. Because if in fact that was real a warped rotor rather than him damaging it then he lost the opportunity to sell you a rotor. A good dealership pays their tech a commission on the work they find. It pays well to keep your eyes open. That is how a good shop makes it's money. Any dealership I worked for the service department ALWAYS pulled it's own weight. Personally my friend I still prefer to do as much of the work on my horse as physically possible. If I CAN'T do it the it goes to a person that I have completely checked out his or her reputation. Been down that road my friend and fought that battle...

Shagly, I still think that triumph motorcycle I told you about is crying out your name. Dude you got a truck...! The bike will get ya about 50 mpg. Ya got learn how to twist the grip and allow yourself to be hurled through time and space. Nothing like the sun on your back and the wind in your face. Oh, and the feel of a honey's arms around your waist as you cruise down the back roads feels pretty dam good too...

Crvygirl, you know your always welcome here on Biker's Run. I have notice a rash of more bikes on the road around here too. What has really surprised me is the demand for bikes that are ten years or older! The demand for bike in the 400 to 750 cc range is incredible. I have a friend that does motorcycle repairs. He right now is scheduling work a month in advance. People are showing up at his shop trailing bikes that haven't been running in years. There putting them back on the road to reduce commuting experiences. Unfortunately, there has also been a spike in accidents. Hopefully, some of the bro.'s here on this sit will remember what it was like starting out as a two wheel rider and extended that hand out to the newbies. As far as I'm concern we're all one big brother and sister hood.

While it's been raining here for a while in Connecticut. Won't have to water the garden tonight...

Well Here's a toast to Jaded & Harleygrrl! Best of luck to the two of you and may all your ups and downs be in bed...

Jaded, Your so right about craftmenship being reduced to just greed in our workforce... Such a shame... When I pounded on fenders in a body shop I would say I was proud to put the car back together BETTER than when it left the factory. I even signed my name inside every quarter panel I installed.
So sad to think that pride is all but gone. I can understand a grunt working in a production shop hounded by his overbearing boss about production...
I would think if I worked in a motorcycle dealership I would treat every bike with the same pride as my own. Your right about loosing the sale to! If that rotor was warped they should have sold me one! That just supports the fact there was nothing wrong with mine when I brought it in for the tire.

Well I got to relax and forget the troubles I had with a little ride today. Dodged the rain in several areas but the bike is running fantastic. With all the bearings in the Springer front end freshly tuned greased and tightened along with wheel bearings and new white wall sneakers she sure rides nice!

Working on my route for Milwaulkee in a couple weeks. Thinking of heading north up through Canada to run the coastline of the lakes and up over to the U.P. of Michigan. Rode back from Sturgis in 1999 with an Indian fellow who lives in the U.P. area so hope to visit him along the way. We called him "Tom the pump man" because his native indian name was way to long for me to remember or pronounce. He owned a company that made parts for large pumps. I was riding an 87 Heritage Special and he had a 1980 Harley Sturgis. First of the belt drives with 80 cubic inchs of Shovel head. He was a guy you just liked the minute he said hello.
After I stop to visit my old friend I'll run along lake superior till I drop down to hug the coastline of Lake Michigan till I to Milwaulkee.
I only hope the 105th is half as good as the 100th party Harley put on. As much as the Harley family did it was the way the entire city of Milwaulkee welcomed us with open arms was the best feeling of all!

Well I better get back to my maps before it gets too late...

Tomorrow promises to be a great day! Take it out and have some fun in the sun!

Good morning, one and all...

It is in fact a beautiful morning here in New England. You get that sense that fall is not far off. There is that crisp chill in the air in the mornings and I am watch a hot air balloon move effortlessly across a beautiful blue sky. The spring and fall season is my favorite time of the year. Nothing like a nice slow cruise down the back roads of a quit small New England town. Making time to make stops and enjoy the dinners and restaurants. Most of the people are so friendly and it's also a great time to sell are hobby to others. Think of a nation of two wheelers...

I do agree with you NYWings about the sad loss of craftsmanship. I believe it stems from pressure of both corporate America and this fucked up government. The average mild class Joe is being eaten alive. He can't take that extra time to get that rear quarter panel absolute perfectly lined up. Now it the paint repairs are good enough who cares if it doesn't blend in perfectly. Get it outta here, next job! That is one of the reasons I retired. Because I am a perfectionist. When I looked up the parts needed to do a job you got all the parts you were going to need. You weren't standing in front of my counter telling me you also needed this part and that part to complete the job. I took pride and still do take pride in the things I take on. When I owned my 1958 Caddy coupe deville show car I actually had people in my class pack up their stuff and leave when my girl showed up. Because I paid attention to detail. They simply could compete against her. Were I worked we had a large multi million dollar contract! A year after I left they yanked that contract. Because of the in competence they had toi deal with after I left. Do I consider myself anything special? Not really! Just a guy wilth the mind set for organization and detail. I took that little extra time to make it right the first time. I preferred to hear the word thanks, rather than hey asshole...! I guess it's were you place your prioritys...

OK, soap box put away. I usually don't get deep into philosophy ... I prefer to just kick back an clean the sniper rifle and wait for the revolution. Now was that two clicks down and one left... Ya gotta watch those quite ones...

I didn't get much two wheel time this year. Perhaps that's why I am so aggressive. Next year it's a new life and someone special to share it with. We well see more two wheel time in some super beautiful area.

Oh that is awful the way you were treated at a HARLEY dealership, of all places....usually they have pride and are competent.....so sorry this place stank and gave poor service and ticked you off. But you had every right to be....guess you won't be going back to your regular dealer if they are like that!! I know I wouldn't.

I think you handled the whole crappy situation with a lot of CLASS, Wings! And you certainly deserved to go out for a nice ride to forget that ordeal.....

Your Springer must be gorgeous!! What yr. is she?? And colour???? You do know I am a Heritage nut, right??

Doing better... wrapping up estate stuff with my brother. Went to the Colorado Veterans Run this weekend in Winter Park, CO, unfortunately rained and SNOWED when we left Friday, so we had to choose between not participating or caging it up to the mountains... which is what we did, went with my Sturgis pals and had a great time... got a lot of welcome backs and thanks a lot from the attendees. You know, getting a thanks 35 years later is really fuck'n weird. And I made a point of reminding people that the fuck'n government didn't give us much of a choice then. Seems to be lost on a lot of people who never grew up with conscription and don't know what it's like to have your life taken away from you at 18. Oh, well. Thanks guys, still lots of riding to be done between now and winter.

PS got the best tat ever from Wild West Tats in Granby CO. So when you see me on the road I'll be the guy with the rattlesnake completely coverin' his forearm... bitchin'.

I understand all the stress and emotions your going through right now. Your brother and sisters here all wish you the best.

Sounds like ya had a good time on the veterans run. There are in fact a lot of people out there that will never know what we faced brother. We did what we had to do then. I do not feel bitter. I try to make myself available to those young men and women caught up in this senseless war that we should have never gotten involved in now. I try to help them so they don't face what we have. There were so many different options this government had in response to 911. I look at it as we can't do anything about what happened to us any more. We have been abandon. But, we can dam well stand up to see that it doesn't happen to them. One think that can be said about us Nam vets are we aren't going to quietly march off into the darkness. As far as I'm concerned my sweet ass is still gonna bring the house down. If some people don't like that "TOUGH FUCKING SHIT" cause I won't go away.

Dinny, not sure Bro but I just got this dam gut feel'n that we will cross pathes some where down the road and that my friend is going to be one hell of a event... I have this weird feeling that I gotta meet the man that walked the same paths as I did. In Nam we were all brothers then and to this day we still are...! It's something outsiders have difficulty understanding.

BTW almost came to blows with some 'peacetime' Marine in the Winter Park Pub who took exception to my VVAW patch. My buddies freaked out when I got in the guys face and gave him both barrells about supporting our troops getting fucked over by the VA and the DoD coming back from Iraq... you send anybody into a war zone four or five times and I guarantee you their heads are not screwed on straight when they get back. It all turned out for the best, the Marine back down when he saw I meant business and took myself very seriously. No accounting for stupidity on some people's part.

Got to see the best barfight I'd seen in a long time when some sleazy wannabe in a vest tried to play stink finger with one them 30-something divorcees that hang out at most biker events these days... I thought she was going to go right through the four guys running tackle for him. I just shook my head, shows you how much of a poser he was when he got to have four other guys defend him from his own stupidity. Got a good laugh out of it though.

Just got off-line chewing some ass at the Colorado Patriot Guard... who by the way was conspicuously absent from the Rally this past weekend. When I got home, I fired off an email to the state captain asking what gives and got back a reply he was out of the office from 8-17 to 9-1. With no other contacts I went to national and complained... later that day I got two responses from drones down the pecking order in the Colorado organization saying the rally didn't agree with their 'mission statement' and they 'weren't invited.' I was pissed... the Kansas PGR showed up in force all the way from KC... I sent both these bozos my KMA response and fired off a copy to national, with my summation about how indefensible and shameful it was for this state's PGR chapter not to have participated when other's came to do it. I don't know what your PGR chapter is like...BUT THIS ONE SUCKS DONKEY DICKS!!!

Yes, Harleygrrl, I am ok. Hubby has taken on his first trike converstion job and I have been helping him as much as he will allow on that project. My mother and mother-in-law have been keeping me hopping with canning from their bountiful gardens. Haven't even had much time to ride lately and I think I am truly having withdrawals. But all is well and I hope to be present more just as soon as things settle here a bit. The gardens have been gleaned of their goodies and the trike is almost ready to advance to be taken to the welding shop so I will be back more often soon. Take care all and ride safe....

Doing better... wrapping up estate stuff with my brother. Went to the Colorado Veterans Run this weekend in Winter Park, CO, unfortunately rained and SNOWED when we left Friday, so we had to choose between not participating or caging it up to the mountains... which is what we did, went with my Sturgis pals and had a great time... got a lot of welcome backs and thanks a lot from the attendees. You know, getting a thanks 35 years later is really fuck'n weird. And I made a point of reminding people that the fuck'n government didn't give us much of a choice then. Seems to be lost on a lot of people who never grew up with conscription and don't know what it's like to have your life taken away from you at 18. Oh, well. Thanks guys, still lots of riding to be done between now and winter.

PS got the best tat ever from Wild West Tats in Granby CO. So when you see me on the road I'll be the guy with the rattlesnake completely coverin' his forearm... bitchin'.

How's life treatin' ya? You getting enough ridin' in this year? In spite of some weird weather, I think this has been the best ridin' summer for years... not too hot or cold... well unless you want to count the snow in the mountains last weekend. The next rally here is Thunder in the Rockies Labor Day weekend in Ft. Collins and I will be there with my former bandleader and her husband on his 2005 Dynaglide. After that... I'm planning a ride to the Tetons and Yellowstone... probably alone, which seems to be par for the course for me these days.

Haha, me keeping busy doesn't necessarily keep me outta trouble...sometimes I think I am a "trouble magnet"...lol. Of course there are varying degrees of "trouble".

Of course I will post pix of the trike. Unfortunately, this one is not going to be mine. It is for someone else. But the next one built will be mine. We have been collecting parts for a while for her now, and I can't wait. Don't get me wrong, I love the back seat but I am chomping at the bit to hold the reins myself.

I'm good, man, good!! Glad to see you are back in the saddle and trying to get back to life without your Dad.

Nope, I have not had a ride in months.....sad to say, but that is changing soon, very soon. Jaded will be here soon. His Wing will live in our garage....hoping then we can enjoy some Fall charity runs, poker runs, dinner cruises, etc.

Wished you lived closer, we'd do the next rally with you, and anyone else here..... have a good one there!!

Your next ride sounds very scenic. There again, if we'd lived closer we'd ride along and check out the open roads.....
