YAY, its Canada Day!

Anyone in the T-Dot headed down to the Lake for the fireworks? Ashbridges Bay?

We'd pack up the kids, but my youngest is scared of the fireworks so we'll do like last year and watch from my bedroom window!

If you've noticed I've kept pretty quiet about Yaeger's comments ... there are some who come to the boards just to stir up shit and it seems that's what he's trying to do. I stand by the policy of not feeding the trolls. nuff said.

As for posting tits, if Gusty, bugga and myself can do it so can the guys! hong and AFM are excused as they've already done so!

Hey all....seems like everyone's having a good time right now!

I was at an asian party last night....it was the first party for a while, and I saw lots of old faces, and some new ones too. Apparently there were even more people going who I didn't see because either the place was too packed, or they couldn't get in!

My cousin even came down from Manchester for it, it's the first time I've seen him in a year so we had a cool time hanging out.

I also had another friend come down from Leeds who is also a pretty good breakdancer......when we were on the dancefloor some strange guy came up and challenged us! Anyway the guy knew a few moves but we showed him up and he went off with his tail between his legs

(Bet no one here knows that I dance too eh?)

The weather sucks here right now.....I feel like I'm back in Malaysia since its humid, and rain just pours down at random intervals. I guess it's predictable, since its the Wimbledon Tennis Open this week and the weather always sucks during Wimbledon for some divine reason!

That article was pretty interesting....I wonder if that's mandarin speakers only or all chinese dialect speakers? In my experience of different dialects, I personally think that Mandarin is one the easiest to learn.

I think the article meant that only Mandarin speakers were studied. A lot of people have said the same thing to me as you--that Mandarin is one of the easiest Chinese languages to learn. Probably why it's the central language...or it became easy, simplified, so that it could be more widely understood.

erc, is it true that the Mandarin used in Taiwan is more classic and traditional and the Mandarin used in China is more contemporary and functional?

Hi Mia,
Actually the language is still the same. It is only the characters are changed. The PROC (People's Republic of China) tried to simplified the characters so that it would be easier for everyone to learn. And they did quite a remarkable job to reduce the illiteracy rate in China. In Taiwan, the characters that were used were still the pretty much the same since the Jin dynasty (265-420 AD). Which is pretty remarkable.

I agree with you ASM. Comparing to hokkien, and cantonese, mandarin seems to be the easiest to learn. Sounds like you are having a good time. Do you break dance too?

According to my friends, Hokkien is also widely spoken in Taiwan as well as Mandarin.....also the taiwanese accented mandarin sounds a bit different from the mainland mandarin.

I do a little breakdancing, but everything that I do I taught myself...I've never been to a dance class in my life!

I'm actually planning to attend classes soon....I want to see what kind of things they do and I'm interested in learning some new moves.

Plus proper dancers have really toned bodies too

i've definitely noticed the part at the bottom of the article that found evidence that learning mandarin for native english speakers is very difficult. When trying to teach words/phrases to people, they often develop sort of a block about hearing the tones. i tell them to forget about sounding silly and say it like they are singing back a subtle melody. that seems to work when they are consciously singing but when just imitating, the tones are completely disregarded. It's kind of interesting to see how some people just don't hear the intonation.... cool article Mia : )

well, i don't breakdance as a rule but I LOVE to dance... i seriously can't help myself... i used to rave a lot and given the right music and circumstances, i would dance all night and early into the morning until the sun came up or my legs fell off! too bad we're not all on the same continent, or else i'd drag AFM and erc (and mia and gusty and hong and everyone else for that matter) out for a night of drinking and getting it on... heheh : )

*edited to add* SW, i didn't get to go check out the fireworks either, but driving back into town on monday night, there were a lot of colourful explosions dotting the horizon... it was kind of cool to see them from the freeway : )

Breakdancing huh? It is not an easy dance. So can you do the head on the ground spinning?? hehehehehe
I agree that dancing is one of the best excercise. What kind of dancing you are interested to learn? Ballroom dancing? Ballet? Disco? Country Dancing?
I enjoy dancing myself. My favorite is still the swing or the jazz dancing. Unfortunately I have problems to find a partner to join me. So I usually ended up dancing in my home with the music. *hint Right bugga? *

I usually think that the most difficult part of learning chinese for foreigners are to recognize the characters. With English, you can still look for dictionary according to spelling. With Chinese, I still have trouble to look for the word that I never seen before in dictionary. I have been told that the five tones of mandarin are difficult for someone who only knows the dialect too. Especially that a single pronunciation can mean tens of different words.

Oh well, after some encouragement. I think I can finally put my face to my name. But I am still a little uneasy to show myself. So I grabbed my cats to accompany me
