Panthers' Delhomme gets $38M extension

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Jake Delhomme was rewarded Thursday for helping guide the Carolina Panthers to the Super Bowl, getting a five-year contract extension worth $38 million.

Delhomme will get $12 million up front, including a signing bonus and option bonuses. Delhomme had one year remaining on his two-year contract.

Delhomme relieved Rodney Peete at halftime against Jacksonville in the first game of the season and led the team back from a 17-point deficit to win 24-23.

He started 19 straight games after that, leading the Panthers to playoff victories over Dallas, St. Louis and Philadelphia.

Then he threw for 323 yards and three touchdowns in a last-minute 32-29 loss to the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl.

I couldn't help it, either.

Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots has a unique ring to it: players rewarded with largest Super Bowl ring in history.

Like the 2001 New England Patriots championship ring, the 2003 championship ring is cast in a brilliant 14-carat white gold. They are the only two Super Bowl rings to be cast in white gold, a characteristic that distinguishes the Patriots Championship rings from any other Super Bowl rings.

This year's championship ring is unique in many other ways, too. Weighing 3.8 ounces, it is approximately 33 percent larger than the 2001 ring and is the largest Super Bowl Championship ring ever created. The ring is “frosted” with 104 diamonds, or just over five carats of diamonds. It is the largest diamond carat total of any Super Bowl ring in history.

Retiring at 27....There goes my fantasy team

MIAMI (AP) -- Ricky Williams has told the Miami Dolphins that he's retiring after just five years in the NFL, The Miami Herald reported on its Web site Sunday.

Williams said he was overjoyed by his decision.

``You can't understand how free I feel,'' Williams told the Herald in a cell phone interview Saturday before boarding a plane in Hawaii and heading to Asia to begin several months of travel.

The 27-year-old running back, who started his career with the New Orleans Saints, said he plans to file his retirement papers with the NFL on Monday or Tuesday.

Williams told Dolphins coach Dave Wannstedt of his decision Friday and said Wannstedt tried to persuade him to reconsider. Miami opens training camp Friday.

With the addition of Corey Dillon will anyone be able to stop those Patriots?! I think my tough team just got tougher.
It's going to be rough living down here in Panther territory with that Tom Brady bobblehead in my back window. ;)

Too bad we can't play them this year, unless we meet in the Super Bowl again. :D

Well, we play them in the pre-season, Aug. 28th... I hope I survive, I think I'm definitely outnumbered.

I wish they'd air more pre-season games. I wasn't able to watch my Patriots win last night. Is your game on TV tonight?

Oh yeah!

All of Carolina's games are on TV.....

Just a sneak hint of a possible future AV bet....but the Panthers play the Pats on national TV in the preseason in a week or 2....:p

There hasn't been any betting in a LONG time!!! If the game's on ESPN, I could watch. Either football, or the Olympics.
