Dear Universe, God, who-the-hell-ever it is that's in charge,

That young man, whose life ended so abruptly and terribly last week? Yeah, him...um...he was a good kid. And his family is good people. Cuz they're my people, and dammit, what the hell? How the hell do we make sense out of that????

Signed,
Confused and saddened.

Dear Confused and Saddened,

All my *hugs* and caring thoughts to you and yours. I am so deeply sorry for your loss.

A friend.

Dear Confused and Saddened,

My heart goes out to you. We just lost a young man in my area, too, to a single car accident because he was driving too fast. I drove by "his" parking space at the high school today. It's been turned into an impromptu memorial, complete with a rather large cross. His loss struck our small, rural school community pretty hard. I was left answering the same question for my daughters. With an open heart, I'll offer you the same thing I had to offer my kids:

HIS gift (God, Master-of-the-Universe, Great Turtle in the Sky - what have you) was offering this young man to us in the first place. That was the gift you need to hold.

I learned this lesson from my father - an alcoholic, s.o.b. of a man. He was the oldest of five, a veteran of the same WWII beach landing that opens "Saving Private Ryan," and a man who was forced into retirement in his 50's because of a heart condition. In short, my dad was someone who had been living on borrowed time since his early twenties and the surly prick outlived them all. The youngest sibling, my Uncle George, was last to go. It happened suddenly. An oddball cancer showing up and taking him quickly. I had missed a couple aunt/uncle funerals through the years, but knew I had to go to that one. Aside from my feelings for Uncle George, I wanted to be there for my dad. He might have been an s.o.b. all my life, but he was still my dad and he had still lost the last survivoring member of his immediate family.

What confused me was the way my dad acted at the wake. He was happy. Smiling. He acted as if it was a wedding or family reunion. My siblings blamed it on the Valium he took for his heart condition, but that didn't ring true for me. Truth was, he hadn't taken any (it was being rationed by my mom, that's how I know).

Leaving my Uncle George's funeral, I faced an 18 hour drive back home. I rode in near silence, trying to figure out what was going on with my dad. It didn't make sense to me until I realized what he had learned in the war. You see, being activated from a National Guard unit, he knew all the guys he had served with. That first day of the war for him, out of 44 guys, 11 made it through the first day. They were later replaced with more guys from "back home." From around the block and near where he grew up. Not all of them made it.

When my dad's brother passed, my dad could barely see the loss of his brother George. Instead, all my dad could see was how lucky he had been to ever have a brother named George and luckier still to have had his brother George around all the years that he did. Sure, it sucked to say "good-bye" for now, but none of that changed how lucky and blessed he felt for ever having a brother like George.

The trite, shorthand way to say this is this: "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened." That doesn't work for me. I cried when I lost my mom and cried again a few months later when my dad left us, too. But behind those tears? I said "thank you" to that Power we all hope is upstairs listening to our prayers and our broken hearts.

I hope you find the time to hug the ones who are left, cherish them, and I hope you find a way to say "Thank you" instead of "Why?!"

Dear My Steve,

Thank you for being so awesome and amazing. Even though you say you accept no responsibility when it comes to my kids you act just like a Dad should. I love you.

Love,

Your Lizi

Dear tendon,

Please behave. I'll ice the swelling and rest my hand if you'll just not rupture on me. I can deal with the pain but I just can't handle another surgery right now. I'm on my own now and it would be too much of a challenge.

Dear new man who just joined my zumba class,

Thank you so much for choosing a place right in my eyeline.

Instead of the girl with the see-through leggings and the thong two sizes too small, I now have your lovely snake hips to watch as they wiggle their way through that hour of sweaty hell.

Here's a tip.... there's classes on Mondays, Wednesdays & Thursdays too

Sweaty-but-happy me :)

Dear Diary,

The other day I joined this Zumba class. Boy, does my body hurt. I do enjoy these classes...even though I'm stuck behind this woman who wears a thong two sizes to small...and are those see-through leggins she's wearing? I don't know. I can't help but feel that this woman behind me is watching me...she...uh oh...

Haha...you'd KNOW if they were see-through... ;)

Dear Young Man sitting beside me,

I am keeping my comments very appropriate for your age group. Please stop looking so delicious and if you find a miracle cream that will add a few years onto your life and take a few off mine, that would be divine.

Thanks

From = a M-You'd-LF that wants you.

Dear Bitch,

Remind me again why I stay married to you? Is it because I feel such a need to be here for the kids? Is it because I learned a long time ago that the only person I should depend upon for my happiness is me? Or maybe it's because I can't stomach the concept of alimony and how you'd probably fuck me if I tried to sue you for divorce. No, I haven't been a perfect husband, but do you have any idea how much positive energy I have to generate to offset your negativity.

Here's something I've never told you. Remember last summer when I started seeing a shrink because I wanted to quit smoking? She was good. She dug deep. Deeper than I gave her credit. Want to know why I stopped seeing her? When she suggested that I should probably consider a divorce.

Damn funny that a licensed marriage counselor would suggest that to me, isn't it?

Instead, I choose to hang in there. Not because I think things will get better, but because I don't know what else to do. Maybe I'm too damn self-sufficient, I don't know.

Meanwhile - I see you flailing around being your typical bitchy self and I think, "Really?" How did I ever fall in love with you in the first place?

Me. -- with more secrets than you'll ever know because you never cared enough to listen.

Dear STBX... or should I call you "Gramps" :D

On most days you make me so fucking miserable that I'm surprised I can even smile. You've got no clue how much I struggle or the stress that I'm putting up with.

I will say thank you for making me laugh today. I realise it was at your expense, but seriously I've not laughed this hard in forever! You see while I was aware of the pathetic, vacuous, vapid trollop that you've been professing your love for, I had no clue just how old she was. I also had no idea that she was a grandmother.

So when I asked you if you were ready to become a grandpa - ahhhh the moment when you said "haha very funny" was absolutely priceless! I don't think she would be too happy to see your lack of enthusiasm, but to me I have laughed so much - to the extent my mouth hurts, and my tummy aches - but it was SO worth it :D

Your giggling soon to be ex :D

Dear Giggling Soon to Be Ex -

LMAO I am happy that bit of information served it's purpose well! Now my concern if he obviously can't read since it was readily available information. But maybe he can read Hooked On Phonics with his new Grandbaby. It will be like a BONDING experience and such!

Love you *giggles too*

Your got a Flip Flop with his name on it friend

Dear Coworkers,

You're not fooling anyone on the overnight shift, you know. If I don't hear you moving around in 6 hours, you're clearly not awake. We both get paid the same and you CHOOSE to take overnight shifts. If you can't fucking stay awake for your shift, then don't bother coming in.

Dear family,
I'm 28 for crying out load . It is time you realized that I'm an adult.

Sincerely,
Your daughter, granddaughter and niece

Dear elphaba69,

For whatever it is worth, I said the same thing when I was 28!!! Sometimes I still say it many years later (laugh and cry)

Take care,

Dear company I interviewed with.

When I submitted my application for employment, I submitted it in the hopes that given my experience that you would hire me for the advertised job. Due to an internal breakdown in communications I was forced to contact the company, as opposed to the company contacting me. Finally after having waited patiently for almost two MONTHS you finally contacted me to tell me you selected another applicant. It should come as no surprise that while I disagreed w/ your decision I was not inclined to bad mouth your company for the decision.

I do take exception to the fact that TWICE in less than 24 hours your company elected to take my personal information and began to both e-mail me solicitation for my business, as well as mail me literature soliciting me for my business. I wasn't good enough for you to hire, yet somehow you expect me to be inclined to actually want to pay a membership fee so you have job security.

I really want to know why you believe it's appropriate to contact me asking me for my business? Further how do you expect me to pay for the membership when I'm not employed? Do you even realise how highly insulting this is to me?! Obviously not!

Holy Cow... Seriously??? A company actually had the gall to do that?? WOW.

My wife had something similar a few years ago with a nonprofit agency she worked for.. She was let go, but yet both her as well as family members still received email invites to the expensive Charity Auction that supported the agency..

Yeah...I've got the email, and I've got the mailing. Oddly the email came from another division than the regular mailing, but both are from the same company.

I could SO make a video about this

Dear Starfleet Academy Ensign,

While I'm sure the message from Starfleet you were reading was important, considering the fact you were in a shuttle while I was in a cruiser who was preparing to go to warp, you might want to keep your eyes pointed forward, through the cockpit windows rather than down at your console.

Sincerely,

He who had to stop warp prep due to your message reading
