Dear Haters,

Even though I was in no way responsible for the opening ceremonies, it grieves me to no end that they weren't absolutely perfect in your eyes.

"The show was confusing at times. It was very long. They didn't highlight the two or three things I like most about the millennia of British history. There were a lot of countries that had to walk through. It was no Beijing. Paul McCartney was a lame ending." That is what you sound like.

Yeah, and you know what? It was fucking awesome.

I'm really sorry the show was confusing sometimes. But I guess that's art for you. Sometimes the joy of art is that you have to think a little bit, experience sensory perception and then go on the journey of trying to figure out what it all means to you. Oh wait, that's all the time with art. Like you, I said why is Abe Lincoln visiting the Shire and why are phallic smokestacks springing from the stadium floor like so many raging 19th century British empire-building boners? But as with many boners, the correct answer was to just sit back and enjoy the experience.

I'm so sorry the show was a few hours long. A spectacle like this once every four years is clearly asking too much of your schedule. I just hope it didn't make you too late for your national security briefing, Mr. President. I don't know how you made it through the whole thing stuck in your living room with a kitchen and bathroom nearby and a DVR to record and pause live TV. I would think more about your suffering but I just don't want to go to such a dark place. Forgive me.

They didn't highlight your favorite parts of British history. How dare they not consult you first? This was an oversight and Danny Boyle needs to hear about it! How could they look at their own history through such rose-tinted glasses? No other country would ever do that, I think we can all agree. They highlighted the Industrial Revolution, children's literature, and popular music at the expense of King AEthelred the Unready? Blasphemous mother fuckers!

And then the Parade of Nations - do we really have to sit through all of them? Hey look, I had my moments of thinking "why don't we combine some of the smaller delegations" just like everyone else. But honestly did you look at the faces of the athletes as they walked around? The expressions of joy and excitement and wonder were so much fun to see. For 3 and 364/365 years of any given 4 year period I'll be right there with you telling the Cook Islands and Mauritius to go fuck themselves. But I'll give them one lap around the track in the opening ceremonies.

It was no Beijing. You're right, it's London. If making fucking obvious moronic statements was an official Olympic sport, you would be the favorite to win the gold. But it isn't, so it looks like you and I will go yet another four years without a trip to the medal podium. Maybe in Rio.

Sir Paul was a lame ending? As lame endings go I think we can do a lot worse than a live sing-along of Hey Jude with Sir Paul McCartney. Do you think anyone in the stadium said, "We just lit the Olympic torch and now I have to sing with Sir Paul? This sucks!" Yeah, me either. And for anyone out there who wants to rip on Sir Paul in general, I have just one question for you: Did you make Revolver? WELL DID YOU?

Again, I'm sorry. I'm sorry Danny Boyle didn't personally show up to each one of your living rooms to jerk you off himself. But I suspect that even if he had, today all we would be hearing is how he used too much or not enough lube, gripped too tight or not tight enough, stroked too fast or too slow, blah blah fucking blah. Can you just enjoy a fucking handjob without picking nits or saying nay?

Enjoy the games.

Sincerely,
Miles

And THIS is what makes the Parade of Nations so worth it!! Thanks Miles, well said.

I don't truly envy many people in this world, but yeah I think to compete in the Olympics and walk around that track in the opening ceremonies has got to be an absolutely incredible experience!

I'm with you two ^^ all the way.
Fucking AWESOME job, and I say that as a really picky visual person.

Dear patrons of X restaurant:

Please stop being such pricks. Your server and food will come as soon as humanly possible. We are waitstaff, not your personal slaves. If you want something, ask ONCE. This will ensure you only get billed for it ONCE. I do hope this is not too challenging a concept for you.

We don't make the food, we only serve it. If there's an issue, please ask your server to correct it, not the bussers, not other random patrons. Your. Server.

Yes, the place looks like shit, the menus are rubbish and 2 out of 4 toilets in the Ladies' don't work. The owners are cheap bastards. We cant do anything about it.

Yes, your food took time to cook. Quit your whining and enjoy the drinks.

My sister used to own a restaurant and every once in awhile she got some real winners in there. She was a good owner, though....lol

Miles...I love this post!!!!!!!!!!

I may not understand it all, but I can sit back and appreciate and enjoy the whole experience. It is amazing what Danny Boyle came up with to open the games.

But honestly did you look at the faces of the athletes as they walked around? The expressions of joy and excitement and wonder were so much fun to see.

I enjoy the Parade of Nations. I loved the different costumes and the little facts tht were thrown out there. And THIS...I agree with you Newbie.

Miles,

It's always much easier to criticise than to do.

FWIW, I think that the ceremony showed the world, in a little over 3 hours, a small snippet of the 2000+ years of our recorded history. It showed the individual national identies that make up our union; some of the many things we have given the world that we should be proud for having done so. It showed that we have a collective sense of humour - even indulging in self mocking; that we can be imaginative, entertaining, and organised whilst remaining democratic, fair and libertarian.

By some standards, may not have been the best opening ceremony, but who cares, it was ours and we made it, on our terms, in our way.

If there are many critics, all criticising differing things, then it was probably right.

EM

P.S. Clearly, however, missing out the battle of Brunanburh, where I grew up, was a major oversight on Mr Boyle's part ;)

Dear Miles,

Never mind the 'like' button.... Lit should have a 'love' button!

Awesomesauce in a post, dood!

Dear Glow in the daylight and dark girls,

Stop fucking tanning please. I don't mind a base coat on a woman, but when she starts looking like Hulk Hogan I just think it makes you look silly. How some of you can look in the mirror and say "Oh yeah that looks good" is beyond me.

Oh and for those dummies who wear fur boots in 105 degree weather. Quit being dumb.

Signed,

Shouldn't be craving orange juice when you pass me on the street

Dear Know It All,

Yeah, I know the game .. you're always right and I'm always wrong. Do you even wonder why it's not even worth it to me anymore to argue about it when I KNOW I am right?

Think about it...

Tired of playing

Dear Pastor of this church,

You should be ashamed of yourself. You buckled under the pressure....and you sadly dropped the ball big time. You had an opportunity to do something that was right.

Instead, you took the "easy" way out, as to not lose your job, to marry this couple down the road.

Shame on you. For someone who probably teaches that God loves all...no matter what color, race, etc........you failed to practice what you preach.

If you had lost your job, if you would have been a true man of faith, God would have provided for you and your family. Everything about your actions just contradicted what you probably teach in your church on Sundays.

Signed,

So disappointed and disgusted.

Please understand that I can never be the person you want me to be. The idealised person in your mind is not real. Please let me go, we can never make each other happy.

Dear STBX,

Every Sunday morning I come pick up our son from his weekend visit with you to take him to church with me. Every Sunday I have him back to you in time for lunch. Today you sent a message with him that you would not be home after church but would come pick him up "sometime" after noon. Because of that, we decided to join another family for lunch after services.

We get in the van on the way to lunch to find 3 missed calls from you on my cell phone. No voicemails, no text messages. I call you back on the way to the restaurant. You decided at the last minute that you were going to wait on him and take him with you. You were extremely angry that I hadn't taken your calls or called you back as soon as the church doors opened. It's CHURCH, you idiot. I don't take my cell phone with me. Well, he didn't want to go with you. He wanted to go out to lunch with our friends. (I told you this day would come.)

Yelling at me does not make our son want to spend time with you. YOU decided to change your plans. YOU decided to wait on him and "waste" the time you'd normally spend sleeping. It is not MY fault that we made plans based on what you'd told him...or that he'd rather spend time with me than an angry, petulant father. Get over yourself and realize the world does not revolve around you. You decided you didn't want a family any more. I'm just the one who left. I never keep our son from you. You're the one who can't seem to make any time for him.

You finally picked him up after 2:00. Try to enjoy the rest of the day with him. He's the only kid you'll ever have. If you keep alienating him, you're going to have some really lonely golden years.

Signed,
I'm Not Yours to Yell at ANY MORE.

Dear X.

The more I think about what you said, i.e., "not bother", the more it pisses me off.

Seriously ? Sorry to have ruined your fun ....

Bite me.

Dear King of the Bad Boy Club Litster

I am not sure how you know when I need a shoulder to cry on or an ear to bitch in but you always seem to call when I need ya the most. Thanks for being my sounding board this weekend. I do feel much better.

About the 29th, I could bring some crime tape.....

Naughty Girl Litster.

Dear nice guy,

You’ve been seriously maligned and swept under the carpet for so long. It can’t go on.
Nice is such a flabby word. It is what you say when someone is dressed in pretty pastel colours, or to compliment your Mother’s friend on her church hat. To describe a real honest-to-God MAN like this is just ridiculous and humiliating.
You’re the one whose quiet strength everyone relies on, you keep in the background finding little to interest you in claiming glory. You’re the guy who sincerely encourages others to do their best, you’re not afraid of failure yourself; you’ve got back on that horse so often that you epitomize gritty determination. You’re not weak, you’re not unsuccessful- you just don’t shout it to the rooftops unless it is about someone you care about.
You’re not that person who is going to trample over everyone else to get to the top; in fact you’ll give as many others a hand up as you can. You’re THAT guy- the unassuming one the reliable one, the one whose mild-mannered personality grows on girls over time until a light bulb goes off. Your calm composition is what often makes us pass you by, but it is just that particular thing we go back to when the laddish, the loud, the bravadoccio have beaten our hearts to a pulp.
You’re our always-there ride home, the one who patiently holds our hair out of the way so we can puke when we get drunk at that party, and you never refer to it again. You’re the one who turns up when called, and the one who always has an easy smile even when things are rough. You’re the one who always gives up his turn for someone who needs it more. A modern man reviving chivalry- who knew? You are not seduced by the idea of shallow romance, in fact you’re the one who simply loves with no strings attached.
Do us girls a favour- don’t believe the hype, and don’t let the viciousness of others corrupt your kindness. The theory that nice guys like you finish last is a fiction spread by those who have to justify their egos.
We’ve been so conditioned to believe in the dramatic hero that you have to give us a little time to come around to you. Hang in there- because when we do, you have us hook, line and sinker.
I hope you find us.
Here’s to you,
- wondering girl
