Do you use editors?

No I don't. I did get some help once, when StellaOmega took it upon herself, back around when I first joined.

I used Microsoft Editor and my wife and neighbor read my stories to check for errors.

If any of my sisters stop by, they'll read my story and check it out as well.

I did not use one. For better or worse it was all me and that was part of the plan. I am not a gifted writer. It is hard work for me to craft something readable. I wrote just to see if I could do it. One of my stories I cared about much more than the other and I think it shows in the end product. For writing on Lit, I am kismet999

Do you think it's worth paying for? I've wanted to try it but would love to hear if it's worth it before I hand over some money.
I don't use an editor. As others have said, it's almost impossible to find one. Right now I work a lot, worked 3 minutes short of 13 hours the other day, so finding time to write and then find an editor, I don't have time for it. I'd rather submit my chapters asap.
Read my first story and then read my last. The vast difference you see is mostly due to Grammarly. People even commented on how mistake-free it was. (It wasn't, but they were minor. I instead of it etc) I find it very useful and have already been through my first renewal. My wife even commented on how much my writing improved with it.

By the way, I should add I Grammarly has/had a free dashboard. It's not as complete as the plugin. I now use Microsoft office paired with Grammarly and can work right in the story editing as I go. I got tired of the bugs in the free versions of Libre and Apache, along with some of the other free editors available.

If you have been accused of being a sociopath, it may not be because you never seek or offer help, but rather because you discourage others from aiding those who need it.
Oh dear lord.

Grow up. Exactly whom did I discourage?

Well, certainly not the overbearing mother and sisters that turned me into a wimp that he accused me of. Amazing what a guy can spout off about with only 30 days in the forums.
He/she is definitely TROLL material.

OK - I was guilty of riling people up the other day about IQ tests. But please, let’s have a bit of decorum. This isn’t the zombie-infested badlands of the General Forum.

Unfortunately, just like attacking Voboy, he starts by making rude comments toward other posters. You can't control that. Hopefully, Laurel or Manu will ban him/her soon.

Grammerly is good - but i find the interaction i have with my editor on plot development helps too. Also - me being in the UK and him in the US means that if I, for whatever reason, set my story in the US he can pick up on what he calls britishisms that perhaps grammerly wouldnt notice.

Early in my writing, an editor was suggested in the comments by a few people. This was mainly because I was typing the stories on my phone, so I had a number of autocorrects and typos. After a few chapters of my main story, I moved to typing on the computer and spending more time reading back through my stories myself. I’ve never used an editor.

I say all of that to say I think using an editor for posting stories online is overrated, at least for me. If I was going to publish all of my stories into a book, yes, and editor would be useful. However, I mainly write for my own enjoyment, and it just so happens that other people enjoy it too.

If you are a strong writer and proofread your works, I don’t think an editor is going to add much. My series, “The Agency”, has always been well received within the category and received high marks in the reviews. Would an editor have helped elevate my borderline Hall of Fame works into Hall of Fame status? Possibly, but I’m content to avoid the time delays and rewrites to run with the stories the way I have them.

I identify with all that, apart from never having migrated from my phone.

I tried, just once, writing on a tablet. I only made it about 500 words.

The phone would be unthinkably difficult for me to write on. I find it amazing that anyone can feel comfortable doing it, but more power to you. Lol.

I made the switch mainly because I knew some of what I was writing was difficult to read because of the errors caused by writing on the phone. I’m glad I made the switch.

I’m sure if I had someone that I trusted to do a good job editing my works, I would feel differently about having an editor. I don’t think having one is a bad thing, I just don’t take my writing seriously enough to feel like using one.

It definitely keeps you from wanting to write longer stories. It is especially difficult to go back and see what you typed earlier in the story. I can type quickly on computer and phone, but computer is definitely faster and easier to write on.

I mainly started on my phone because I didn’t want my wife to find my writings.

I only recently gained the ability to shrink the window I'm typing in to anything less than full-screen!

I need to see how the piece looks as a whole. And yes, I need to be able to scroll up and down.

I wrote a 20k woed story on my phone.

And this post.

I can't even fathom writing on a phone. Full desktop, big screen and ergo keyboard. Maybe it's just my age!

I often start writing by reading the story from the beginning so that I'm in the sense of it. Or picking the new addition up at a certain point and reading forward to make sure it makes sense. I mean LORD, the number of mistakes I make just sending a text!

I proofread a lot.

I do use Word on my phone.
