Sept. 13th concert with Billy Joel: Rod Stewart calls for support of Ukraine, calling Russian attacks on it 'evil'

Stewart, 79, has rarely spoken on political issues in public—but has recently become a Trump critic, ending a friendship of many years with his Palm Beach neighbor and saying his wife had called the former president a “disgrace.” In August, he mocked Trump for “turning orange,“ a reference to the former president claiming his rival, Kamala Harris, had “turned Black.”

Going so explicitly political, however, is a new departure. At a joint concert with Billy Joel, Stewart changed outfits between songs and emerged on stage in bright blue pants and shirt and a bright yellow jacket. “These are the colors of a flag—the flag of Ukraine,” he told a crowd of about 40,000. “There’s an evil war going on in Ukraine. Russia has invaded Ukraine. This song is for Ukraine, for its soldiers. For [Volodymyr] Zelensky.”

North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis has joined other Republican leaders in voicing concerns about former President Trump’s close relationship with far-right provocateur Laura Loomer in the final stretch of his presidential campaign.

“Laura Loomer is a crazy conspiracy theorist who regularly utters disgusting garbage intended to divide Republicans. A DNC plant couldn’t do a better job than she is doing to hurt President Trump’s chances of winning re-election. Enough,” Tillis wrote on social media Friday.

“Laura’s a supporter,” he said. “I have a lot of supporters.”

He added that he doesn’t know why people are asking questions about her.

“She’s a strong person; she’s got strong opinions,” he said.

this is embarrassing.

I don't recall him being 'tough on China'. I remember him sucking up to President Xi, calling him a 'good man', 'a friend', a strong man'. I remember when China was caught giving Trump millions in a fake lease on Trump Tower and meetings with Chinese agents at Trump Tower and Mar y Stinko. But not being particularly tough.

Former US President Donald Trump has been found liable to pay damages to London singer and songwriter Eddy Grant for using his song Electric Avenue without permission.

It has taken Mr Grant, 76, more than four years to sue the Republican candidate in this year’s presidential election in the US courts, over his 2020 campaign video that used a 40-second clip of the song.
:nana:
A federal judge in Manhattan ruled Mr Trump breached Mr Grant's copyright for his 1983 hit, and is now liable for damages as well as paying for the singer's legal fees.
On Friday, Judge John G. Koeltl rejected arguments from Mr Trump’s lawyers that the Twitter video was shielded under copyright’s fair use doctrine, which allows for the use of protected works in certain situations.

Brian D. Caplan, Mr Grant’s attorney, told Business Insider: “As a staunch believer of artist’s rights and the ability to control their creative output, Mr. Grant believes that the decision will help others in their fight against the unauthorized use of sound recordings and musical compositions.

Nicky Jam’s collab with Maná, “De Pies a Cabeza,” is no longer on streaming services. On Sunday morning, the Mexican rock band announced that it had pulled the song from the internet following the reggaeton star’s public endorsement of Donald Trump.

“Maná doesn’t work with racists,” read the statement from Fher Olvera.

"For the past 30 years, Maná has supported and defended the rights of Latinos around the world," read the post's caption in Spanish. "There is no business or promotion that is worth more than the dignity of our people. That is why today Maná decided to remove its collaboration with Nicky Jam on ‘Pies a Cabeza' from all digital platforms."

everything trump touches turns to shit

I see you did manage to ask Mr. Google. And then skimmed the very first result to arrive and the same conclusion you had at the beginning.

Very telling.

Yet you somehow missed the other results which all give a better overall picture of copyright law as well as fair use laws.

Anyone can use copyrighted materials IF they obey the rules regarding exceptions. Those rules apply to everyone.

For instance (don't click the linky if you're on a cellphone):

IF the Trump rally is using the recording for a "nonsubscription broadcast transmission" then they're exempt under section 114 of US copyright law.

Then there's the issue of fair use:

Trump's campaign is a non profit and the music is not being played for commercial purposes and is being used in part for nonprofit educational purposes of informing the public on current social issues.

This means the use is EXEMPT because of the nonprofit status and use of the material.

Further, usually the vendor (local business establishment) obtains the license to play copyrighted music and pays the royalties from the monies they receive from those who lease the space.

In such cases, the artist cannot demand that the lessee not play their music because it is the vendor who has obtained a license to do so and under that license may play the copyrighted material at any point as long as they pay the royalties. For the artist to demand the vendor to cease and desist would be a breach of contract for which the artist would be subject to legal penalties.

Which of the above situations would apply depends on a lot of factors you haven't taken into account. I'm positive that Trump's organization has done that because this isn't the first time an artist has demanded that Trump cease and desist and yet Trump still plays the music at his rallies.

In the end, copyright law is complex and there are many many nuances you're not going to get from a fast search on the internet. If you rely on blogs and simple summaries which only skim the surface you're going to get yourself in trouble very quickly.
“Donald Trump has lost a legal battle with the singer Eddy Grant over using his 1983 song Electric Avenue in a 2020 ad without permission.“
and
“Judge John G Koeltl rejected the argument made by Trump’s lawyers that the video was protected under the copyright fair use doctrine. “It’s everything we asked for,” one of Grant’s lawyers, Brett Van Benthysen, told Business Insider. “100%.”

Another of Grant’s lawyers, Brian Caplan, told Business Insider: “As a staunch believer of artist’s rights and the ability to control their creative output, Mr Grant believes that the decision will help others in their fight against the unauthorised use of sound recordings and musical compositions. Politicians are not above the law and the court reaffirmed that.”
