Last night watched Pride and Prejudice, the new one with Kiera Knightley. I had very low expectations of it because the previews I'd seen looked like they'd slaughtered the book, but actually, they did a decent job of keeping plot and dialogue. Obviously there were some changes, but it was a good movie. Of course, not nearly as good as the book; one of the things that struck me the most about the movie is how incredibly absurd they made Mrs. Bennett. Yes, she was a bit ridiculous in the book, but the movie went beyond that which made for some comedy, but it also didn't feel right to me. Maybe I should read the book again.

Anyway, also watched Rumor Has it with Jennifer Aniston. It was a nothing little movie, not bad but not great. Best part was Shirley MacLaine, without a doubt.

sj your comments have inspired me to get a hold of this version of Pride and Prejudice and also made me think of the very lovely Persuasion with Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds. I saw it years ago but just recently bought it at Amazon to enjoy at my leisure. I can't recommend it highly enough, it's a beautifully made, simple little film with great tension and romance, completely wonderful. The follies of the more absurd characters are handly deftly without too much emphasis, just enough to make us love the lead players all the more more for their cleverness and humour. The cinematography is very lovely and the art direction stunning - there's a gritty realism to the sets, lots of candlelight, mariners and naval fellows in jackets that are less than impeccable after months at sea, great details that give a the film a real sense of time. Can you tell that Ilike it? :)

I don't think I've seen it, so I'll have to add it to my list! One thing I both loved and didn't about this version of Pride and Prejudice was the way they portrayed Darcy. The actor had the right look for him, the right seriousness and demeanor, but there were moments went he expressed such defeated longing for Elizabeth that I wanted to cringe. He wasn't that obvious (or puppydog lovestruck) in the book and seeing him that way took away from some of Austen's magic.

Just watched Final Fantasy 7. If you like Japanamation and Sci-Fi you'll like this one.

Must rent Shawn of the Dead and 28 Days again. Both great movies.

I didn't like 28 days much.

I wanted it to be better.

I third that motion for Shawn and 28 Days - I'm a pretty big fan of the new, faster style of zombie flick. Much creepier in a lot of ways. :D

I haven't watched many movies recently, but I've had Pump Up the Volume stuck on the brain.

Shaun of the Dead? I loved that movie! The very end of it, after the credits roll is the best!

As for me, the DVD I last watched was the first X-Men movie and I love it tons. The second one is also great and the third one I'm expecting to suck, but we'll have to see how that pans out. The last movie I saw in the theaters was RV and it was absolutely terrible, don't go see it. Damn Robin Williams and Jeff Daniels - they're better than that!

Yeah, doll - the very end of Shaun of the Dead is pretty damn funny. :D

Actually, that just reminded me of Cabin Fever - I loved its cheesy gore and it had the best surprise running joke ever.

I didn't see it. I try to stay away from most "horror" films and made the mistake of actually renting Wolf Creek. Oh my fucking god...

Hostel was quite horrible as well.

Hostel was gory fun. It also made me wonder, what's the fun of going to Amsterdam if it's full of Americans?

The guy who directed Cabin Fever also did Hostel. Why horrible? I've been wanting to see it.

It was just boring to me. Too damn short, way too much sex (yes, it can happen) with not enough gore. It could have been done much, much better.

I was just being silly, Mistress. I lived in Germany for ten years, but there were times when it seemed that I ran into more tourists than natives in places like Venice, Barcelona, and Paris.

Really good ones

I recently saw History Of Violence and Serenity. Both were outstanding in different ways. The love scene with Viggo and Maria Bello was one of the best I've ever seen in a mainstream movie and the story was interesting and kept me guessing. Serenity was a fun space movie. If you like Sci-Fi, it's one of the best ones I've seen.

Just watched "Sound of Thunder" last night, based on a short story from Ray Bradbury. Only redeeming quality was the running commentary Recidiva and I had about Monkeysaurs. That alone was good for a few laughs. The actual movie however blew chunks.

Caught this one yesterday.

To be honest, it had an even worse plot than most anime. There were a lot of times where I went, "Huh?"

That said, the animation was spectacular. And the soundtrack was great. That choral piece at the climax has become an earworm.

Hostel was gory... but it didn't suspend my disbelief. Great concept, actually... but they could have gone with CREEPY instead of GORY (or along with gory) and I feel it would have been better...

I didn't like the main character actor, either...

Watched "North Country"--Charlize Theron-- it was quite good, although it felt long to me. But I like those "Norma Rae" kinds of movies... :D

Aeon Flux was fun.

I've been distracted from replaying "Advent Children" over and over, at least :)

A movie I saw a few months ago that I liked quite a bit, even though the ending could have been better, was Elizabethtown. Great soundtrack, good actors, good plot. I liked it a lot.

Did you know they have a second volume of the soundtrack out?? I liked that movie, too and can't wait to get that second volume.

Saw Control last night. It was better than I expected from a B movie. A sort of Flowers of Algernon meets La Femme Nikita thing.

Saw Last Holiday tonight it was really fun, and had a great lesson in it!
One I try to follow but never seem to fully do.

Now watching The One with my son again.

Last night watched The Unfinished Life. It was okay; the plot wasn't nearly as interesting as a couple of the characters (Redford and Freeman).
