Endless Curiosity

In my line of work we put a lot of emphasis on adult learning theory, and checking for understanding. What you describe above is a classic example of why it's preferable to ask open ended questions, as opposed to the closed ended, yes/no questions. Open ended questions REQUIRE more than a one word response. They always start with the classic who /what / when / where / how / why words. You get much better responses that way. It's all about how you ask the question. *end of lesson*.

Muy interesante. :)

Some of the simple-answer threads are perfectly fine (though I have spoken about cock-blocking on some of them). I have started some threads l, as others have, that require a longer answer, and sometimes they die because they are considered too high concept or too much work
I'm amused by the idea that a forum thread intended to cultivate mutual understanding between people who are generally supposed to love the written word might be considered too lofty or too difficult.

You're right, though! Threads that require a bit of thoughtful input do tend to get pushed quickly down towards extinction by more superficial ones. It takes a strong base of committed and regular followers to ensure that those threads survive.

Unrequited attraction is a bitch, whether it be a relationship that’s gone cold or an unrealized crush. How do you deal when your love (or sex) interest is less interested in you than you are in them? Do you drown yourself in one of the classics, like ice cream or whiskey? Meaningless sex with strangers? Or just suck it up and move on?

For me there has only ever been one.

We met online. Back when I still used dial-up AOL. We were stupid kids.

We talked every night for hours, for years. Laughed together. Came together. Never met.

She would push me away and pull me back in.

But I cared too much about her.

I could just never quite get her to agree to meet me. To be more than a whisper in the night. I was always the one who called so eventually...I just stopped.

In part she was afraid. But in part I knew I cared more about her than she did about me.

I know she knows I got married. She always felt like she was falling behind, and I hope she doesn't think I wanted to get rid of her. But she was never going to want me how I wanted her.

In the end I never got over her, I guess. But I am a better person for having known her. We're all just amalgamations of people before us. Jumbles of knowledge and habbit from a thousand different memories. And she is a large part of me.

I support this viewpoint! :)

I see little point in joining those threads just to post "nope" under another guy in the hope that some Lit lady will then direct a "hell, yeah!" reply to me instead. Conversely, if I post a creative reply in the hope of attracting a similar response, the chances are that some other Lit guy will just post "nope" to get to their turn instead (or, sometimes, just skip me and reply to a lady a few posts above with "hell, yeah!").

I agree that those threads would be much more interesting if they asked a more open question rather than just seeking a yes/no response. :)

Past me made a thread for you: http://forum.literotica.com/showthread.php?t=1353904

Gossip. Some love it, some avoid it like the plague. If you’re on Lit long enough it’s nearly impossible not to hear a little gossip, even if inadvertently. How much does Lit gossip affect you? Has it affected any of your interactions or changed your view of another Litster?

It has, unfortunately. In one or two cases, it's made me pull back from a connection, when I thought they were sincere and then found out they were ... connecting ... with everyone else under the sun. Still friends, but that's it.

I feel like I'm pretty out of the loop from a Lit gossip standpoint. I hear occasional tidbits, but not a lot and I'm okay with that.

I have had a few instances where I was interacting with individuals on the threads and I would suddenly get a PM from someone with a "friendly warning" about the person I was interacting with. I tend to take those with a grain of salt and try to form my own opinions. :)

I'm usually the last to find out anything, so I take whatever tidbits I can get. That said, I pretty much judge only by posts and conversations, not scuttlebutt.

And Suz, it was lies!

Suzanne’s answer, though I’ve never received any “friendly warnings”.

I did have gossip dumped on me once. A PMer of casual acquaintance who I chatted with for a time.

There was an (apparently) acrimonious Lit breakup on the board, A and B. This was all behind the scenes so I’m not really sure what happened. My Pmer (C) was friendly with A. A apparently shared B’s negative view of C, with C, after the breakup, as well as a myriad of ways in which B mistreated the opposite sex. C was pissed, and I got a most unexpected earful.

Sorry if that was confusing. I had to type it out thrice and I’m still confused. :p

I didn’t ask for the gossip. Didn’t want the gossip. Didn’t ask for further details. In spite of which, it colored my view and every potential interaction with B. More so, because it never felt I should broach the subject. The information hadn’t been given in confidence, but still….

I no longer chat with C, but I still look askance at B. :(

it's a two edged sword..
There are many things I'd *like* to know, but then there are other things I prefer not to be privy to.

I really don't want to know how many people you've played with, for starters. Color me judgemental, but, geesh... If you've got a running list of playpartners, my "ladylike" gene (albeit only a minuscule part of my entirety) puts you into a "category".. I can't help it. I blame my upbringing. Hell, I've put myself in "that" category a couple times and I've only had a handful of partners... So... meh..

Sometimes, though, gossip, as it were, isn't necessarily a "bad" thing. Certain information can at least prepare you for potential outcomes as long as you accept the information at face value and consider the source.

I'm probably not being very helpful here..

I'm rarely privy to Lit gossip and I don't mind that.

I guess if the gossip were about me I would want to know about it. Maybe. Then again, if you listen to the gossip and choose not to interact with me it's probably for the best. I'm not swayed by the opinions of others, so we aren't likely to get along.

I ... flirt with everyone. You may have noticed that. 99.987% of that flirting is completely harmless and does not/has not/will not lead to any kind of "playtime". I just assume others who flirt with the masses are the same way.

I did hear one rumor once that gave me pause. I sent a PM and asked the person directly. He answered directly. Shouldn't it be that simple? *shrugs*

This has merit. Helpful gossip and malicious gossip just ride a knife's edge in such a small community. Tricky.

"Flirting" is a far cry from "playing", but then again, for every person there is a different definition of what constitutes "play" and"flirting".

I short circuit when trying to do either, so, I'll remain asexual as far as the boards go.

Gossip, here and in real life, doesn't play a role. I have little time for it, and typically could care less. I'll form my own opinions, thank you very much.

I am assuming that you mean it doesn't "play a role" for you.

Sadly, gossip does play a role, and people allow it to play that role.

I think we like to think that things, like gossip, are neutral. But nothing is truly neutral.

You assumed correctly.

You are right, nothing is neutral, but I always exercise my right to walk away.

Yeah, I think a lot of the drama and gossip here springs from the fact that so many think that one is indicative of the other.

Online I can flirt with ease. I think that's why I do it so much, because I can.

In person?

Nope, can't do it. Words and tone and body language and expression ... brain overload! I also don't notice when someone allegedly has flirted with me. Doesn't register at all.

Sometimes I wonder how I ever got married... and in person my flirting skills now comes across as sarcasm.

But I do think there is a societal difference when it comes to a woman who is visibly married (ie: wearing a ring) and flirts compared to a man who is visibly married and attempts to flirt.
