Endless Curiosity

I've been looking at the beginning of the thread, I guess I need to start somewhere. :)

Question for you all! What story threads do you or have you read to start your imagination going or enjoy? :D

Story threads?

Is that separate than just the stories on here?

when is enough enough? Maybe it's work, a relationship, a friendship, or even a family member that has pushed you to the breaking point. How do you decide that it's enough, that self preservation demands that you walk away? When you do, how do you make the break? Brutal honesty or a silent exit? What's your usual ending?

I'll have to think about this one....difficult to answer.

I will give people, relationships, family, etc. chance after chance. I hate to cut people out, but sometimes it is just the only option left.

I don't even know what the exact point of no return is. However, once I have reached it, I know that that is it, I have nothing left to give, and it is a matter of my own sanity (or lack thereof) vs. trying to keep another entity happy. I tend to try to make the exit as painless as possible for the other person, plus I don't like conflict. But, generally there comes a point for brutal honesty when they can't take the hint that I am finished.

Bonus: Once I decide that I am done, that's it. There is no changing my mind, and I will be perfectly fine passing you in the street and acting as though I have never met you.

Wow. this is tough.

It's so situation dependent. Sometimes it's just the pull back and stay away. Sometimes it's the loud, "I'm done with you" It so depends on who and why. Generally, I don't like loud yelling and fighting. But sometimes, I just tell them, "I'm done."

One place I worked sucked. So, I just said, "I just don't think this is the right job for me." And quit.
Another place, I told them "I don't like like living in this city, so I'm going to look for a job elsewhere." I pretended it had nothing to do with them, because it seemed like the easier path (and it was, and it was smart...don't burn bridges).

Sometimes the white lie is just the easiest.

I think the breaking point for anything of this nature when you are committing much more to something than somebody else is.

I'm not sure about that - personal experience tells me that you can hang on WAY longer after you reach that realization. For a multitude of reasons - loyalty, guilt, financial reasons (in the case of a spouse), etc. For me, it was the realization that even my kids were fed up with the situation. And since I was only staying for them, it seemed pointless to continue to take the bullshit after that.

He's really the only person I've ever given up on. I take friendships very seriously and once you're a friend, you're kind of stuck with me.

I have this problem too. (Is it a problem? I'm never entirely sure.)

It doesn't happen a lot, but if I form a strong attachment, oh boy. Years, distance, it doesn't matter.

Many of the people here (perhaps including me shameless self promotion here) have our stories linked in our signature. That can be a good place to start.

Yes....I have no shame...

It seems nobody is coming.

*reaches over the counter*

I have often found myself forced to choose between security and freedom. These two things are rarely found together. Which way do you lean? Why? Are there certain types of choices where you go one way and others where you go another? Freedom seems the 'sexy' option, but is it correct?

Interesting. In many ways, I do not have the problem at all professionally. I really kind of do have both.
In life though, you are right, "freedom is just another word for nothing left to loose."

I think that in our lives we have many places where we have that trade. It's not always binary (this or that), but often a scale (more this, less that). Some places we are willing to trade off freedom for security other places, we choose freedom over security. We all have places where we are willing to take risks, and places where we are not so much.

I think too, it's often a case of figuring out what worth giving up freedom for. An example might be marriage. There, we give up some freedom, but we get security. But it's really only a good trade off with the right partner. (and this is a about WAY more than just sex).

Anyway, fascinating question.

I, hands down, need both. I will, and have, worked my butt off to feel secure. It's not necessarily that I'm a huge spender, though I will spend if funds are available. I'm more of a have-it-in-case-I-need-it type of girl.

Buuuut, I don't do well in conventional settings.

I NEED MY FREEDOM

So I often find offbeat avenues in which to work my butt off. :p

Because of my family, I always go for security. My main priority is making sure they're taken care of first. Everything else falls into line behind.

In work I have always, relentlessly and ruthlessly, sought freedom. Never did the same thing more than a few years. Moved every year for who knows how long. 1099s. Work from home.

But I settled down in that sense recently enough. And I have to say I rather like it. I have enough freedom. Nobody breathing down my neck, can cut out early with reason - but not the total freedom of before.

Romantically I've done the opposite and had security for a rather long time. And, well... *gestures at lit*

Balance in both areas is necessary, I suppose.

Sorry I flaked out yesterday, I was in quite a mood. Sometimes I find it's best to stay quiet.

Thanks for stepping in, Lu. You're awesome. :)

- Complaint threads or posts pop up on the board occasionally. People unhappy with some aspect of Lit, or upset over a bad experience. In your opinion, what is the biggest reason people leave Lit?

Over expectation........:D

What does that say about me?

Over the past few years, I've seen people go, then come back, then go again... and there usually are two reasons:

1 - real life demands, or a desire to "do better" with their real life family, without the distractions and temptations of Lit

2 - the drama gets to be too intense and they need a break.

I'm sure there are more, but these are the two that I notice over and over.

First off, you didn't "flake out" and you don't need to apologize!

This pretty much sums it up I think. But I might add a refinements and one other category. Circumstances change. This fits into (1) to some degree, but it's important to recognize that sometimes what happens is that the (often unhappy) situation that led them to seek companionship here resolved itself somehow and they were able to find what they needed elsewhere.

The other category is that they got bored here. At first, you're like a kid in a candy shop. All this energy and sexuality and you soak it in. But eventually the "on line" aspect becomes boring and frustrating. And they leave.
