"Fifty Shades of Grey"

I just uploaded the 3rd to my Kindle...I was disappointed with the 1st, felt a little better about the 2nd and now I'm hoping the 3rd is worth the effort and commitment to the trilogy...I shall see!
Has a slushy happy ending. lol

Hope you Ok not heard form you for ages xx

I've heard a lot of hublla about this book and was wondering if anyone had the free pdf or what not. I just have to find out for myself about this trash.

I have read the 1st book and it was ok but I have read other books by other authors that I thought were better. But as long as you enjoy it or it sparks good conversation then I am all for it. :)

Interestingly enough I was in Target the other day and on the shelves right below Fifty Shades was Anne Rice's Sleeping Beauty trilogy and that made me giggle. I have been reading erotica for years now including the Sleeping Beauty novels and all my girlfriends always gave me such a hard time but now that they have all read Fifty Shades they are asking if they can barrow my books lol. When I have talked to them about what they liked about Fifty that have all said that they liked the 3rd book the best because there was less or no BDSM in it okay to each their own. Now however they might pick up Anne Rice's book thinking "this must be like Fifty Shades since Target has them next eachother on the shelf." But what a shock they will get once they start reading those books :D I'll see what happens . . .

mojo23, yeah-- far too many people think the general appeal of the books is the BDSM but it isn't-- it's the sex in general...

The thing about the BDSM is that it's the point of conflict for the characters, which is why she could get away with having as many explicit sex scenes as she does. But there could be some other point.
What would make the next big seller is a book that has the same ratio of explicit sex to romance, but vanilla.

They are so damn adorable!

One thing I love about them is that the women (Beauty for one) are as unabashedly horney as the men.

Ya know I just got into a conversation about this exact thing the other day. Everyone expects guys to be horny all the time but if a woman is she's a "slut" or "skank" or something. Bah

Some tv special on about the 50 Shades phenomenon.

They've actually just compared Christian Grey to Mr Rochester from Jane Eyre.

WTF?!

What is wrong with the world? Seriously...I am so tired of this. Can we just move on to something new now before we destroy our entire literary heritage?

I know...I know...I shouldn't let them get to me. [sigh]

The programme actually stated that bdsm is abh am slightly confused now!

(If we're watching the same show) ...something I noticed:

The women (all rather strong-minded dominant types I notice) all said something to the effect that when it came to the 'contract' they either skimmed over it, didn't 'get it' or just ignored it completely. As in, they enjoyed the thought of letting a man do all the work sexually, but never intend to actually submit themselves to one.

This proves again to me that for readers this book is not actually about a truly dominant man and a truly submissive woman at all (and I actually doubt that the book is this anyway). It's a pure fantasy.

Actual Bodily Harm - a crime of assault under English Law
Got it.

And yes-- for several centuries now, that's exactly what the mainstream has thought about BDSM. In fact, for some of us oldsters-- that's what WE thought too, and we had no idea how to get these desires met without endangering ourselves.

Anne Rice recently weighed in on this:

http://www.cbc.ca/books/2012/07/anne-rice-on-the-resurgence-of-erotica.html

"I think people are much more open and frank about enjoying this kind of fiction because they feel empowered," she commented. "Back in 1983, the feminist movement was really just getting going and women very much wanted to be politically correct. They did not want to be thought of as people who enjoyed rape fantasies and there was a lot of negative feeling among some feminists against [erotica and romance] books, but that's not the way it is now. I mean, women have enjoyed equal rights for decades now and I think they are much more open and honest about wanting to enjoy all kinds of things. Powerful people have always enjoyed the fantasy of being passive."

Still, Rice recognizes that people even in this day and age wonder why being tied up and sexually dominated or humiliated would be a turn-on.

"It's a common fantasy for many people but it's not everybody's fantasy."

E.L. James has told fans she dislikes the term "mommy porn," which is how the media have described her Fifty Shades of Grey series, but Rice believes that erotic literature is a kind of pornography.

"I think erotica is a nice word for pornography and erotica is an accurate word," she said. "It means you're putting it in writing, and in my case, you're not using vulgar four letter words, you're using the King's English to the best of your ability... But it is pornography -- it's meant for sexual pleasure."

Again, if anyone missed my post, I have all three "50 Shaes" in pdf format that I will be happy to email to you.

James doesn't like the term porn because its harsh! Too harsh for her 13 year old mentality. In porn those bad women say "pussy" she says "down there" so it's romance dammit!

Nah, that was the view of one woman who was viewing it from her feminist standpoint without actually having any real knowledge or understanding of BDSM.

LOL, I remember well the Troubador publishers, especially Rosemary Rogers books from the 70's. They were usually historical romance based with lots of sexual content. RR was seen as groundbreaking in that she didn't stop writing at the bedroom door and skip to a new chapter...she was very graphic, as were some others who followed. I had an elderly aunt who came to stay with us while she recovered from an operation, and when she said she wished she had thought to bring a book to read, my mother told her to check out my collections. I came home from work to find her sitting on the front porch with her head buried in one of RR's classics and a smile from ear to ear. She chuckled and said she hadn't enjoyed reading so much for a long time....then went on to read all of them before she went home.:D
