It's classical art, just before the renaissance period.

The artist is trying to convey the death of a relationship and how that can leave you exposed but if you look you can still find beauty.

By the way I haven't a clue what I'm talking about!!

I get all that, it's very like Caravaggio (the artist was associated with him in some way) but the symbolism escapes me.
Is she alive or dead? Why is she clutching a skull in an almost erotic fashion? What is the significance of the cross and the keys(?) Is that a shroud?

I'm certain that there are a great many religious overtones if for no other reason than the title and the period but the entirety of it still escapes me.

Well it's Magdalene - as in Mary Magdalene the woman who was with Christ when he died and the first to find him after he had risen. The skull cannot be considered Christ's because his body was assumed into heaven. The skull is an often used symbol, of the period in which this was painted, of life's fleetingness.

She is often portrayed holding either a skull or a cup.
