Freeport Adventurers

Perrin is not concerned with the reaction of the young nobles, he has tangled with the likes of them many times over. He admits to Fern that it was not the smartest thing to do, but then who said he was smart. He looks at the way that his fellow adventurers are already working together and is pleased. This group has the makings of a good team. Besides, he can mop up this group of nobles all on his own if need be. Perrin starts to stand up....

Ah well, life's too short for us humans - we amy as well make it interesting. I stifle a groan and pull out one of my more wicked looking knives its one I've had spellcast and although it would be little use in a real fight it spins and turns marvellously.
I begin to toss it up and down in my hand not looking at it, Its a common but impressive 'looking' trick and it usually makes people think twice.

Fern 9.33 pm ish

As the man regains his composure, I walk over to him.

'I'm sorry, my friend acted so abruptly, he's been away from people for sometime in the Northland's and I guess he has some difficulty sometimes interacting with people', I try to explain, 'you see I guess it gets pretty lonely in those frozen lands',
I glance across at Perrin who, unpreturbed by his recent activity, is chewing vigorously on the remains of a deer haunch, more concerned with the few remaining pieces of flesh than the small group of aggitated young bucks.

'He really is quite a pleasant person, just a little impulsive', I continue, 'why don't you have the chair back and I'll get the barmaid to bring you a pitcher of ale'

I grasp the back of the chair and push it towards the group, smiling pleasantly, hoping that the offer will suiably placate them and defuse the situation.

Turning to Perrin I say, 'It's ok, I don't mind standing, leastways not for the time being, I'll get a chair in abit if one becomes available.'

OOC: I can't really decide what the group does that really has to be in the domain of the DM, for NPC encounters.

Edge (Fledgrin Sorrow)

I'd noticed her as soon as she entered, but tried to kep my interest to a minimum. I'd seen the girl enter, the one who must have been in search of the adventurers, as she was the only one who hadn't approached the board and read through the update and post with raised eyebrows. She'd taken my interest at first, but not entirely. Then the large man had gone over to her.
The she had come in, the human girl petite, but sturdy by the looks, her hair short and dark, her eyes a beautiful grey. I looked down then, suddenly self-conscious. I'd been told my brown ones were quite striking in my younger days, though that was before the incident.
No one seemed to notice me at all, which was good. Discretion was often one's best ally in such places. But I did, without fail, notice her every move as her lovely frame moved toward the table the large man and woman sat at. My mind wandered for a bit then, lost in fancy, then returned to the scene a few moments later.
I watched as the possibility of a scuffle began to rise. I took a careful grip on my long sword, but didn't move. I had no doubt that the odd group of elves and humans were those that I would join should I be accepted, and I saw the one who'd robbed me of my coins standing among them, enforcing this thought.
But for now, I remained where I was, but on guard. From where I sat, I could see the scene in almost full, broken more often than not by the passing of another patron. Some had begun to gather around the scene, inhibiting some of my view, but not all of it.
After enough of these had gathered, I decided to head over to them. The four men who'd been offended seemed innocent enough, but I'd made that mistake before in my travels, underestimated men and women alike due to their appearance. And I remembered how young I had been when I first began work as a soldier for hire.
I moved stealthily over to where they were, joining the patrons that had gathered to watch the scene, some already placing bets on who would win between the two groups, others just betting on who would or wouldn't be harmed. It seemed the large man who'd borrowed the chair so unkindly was the favorite to most. Made sense, though I'd seen the small wiry elves do plenty of damage in my time, and I knew from experience that anyone could bear skill in the arts of battle.
As the female who'd just joined them returned the chair, offering to purchase drinks as a gesture of friendship, I saw one of the men, not the one who'd been dumped, but the one furthest from the event, staring back at the large man, eyes glaring.
Numbers were always an advantage in such situations. Perhaps adding one more to the equation might help to satiate the situation.
I stepped forward, setting myself apart from the rest of the crowd, letting my hand fall from the handle of my long sword.
"Hello, friends," I announce, looking to the large man first, then scanning through the others. "I am Fledgrin Sorrow, and if you are who I think you are, I am here wishing to join your cause. Might I lend my sword to this venture?"
As I spoke, the one glaring at the large man shifted his attention of me, wrinkling his brow at me. I glanced back, pretending not to notice him, though I was certain he'd caught me looking. He glanced away as my eye found him, then looked back, his brow wrinkled even tighter, weary now.
It was the patch. Something about it often helped me in these situations. Not worth the sacrifice I'd made, but at least something good had come of a bad situation. One-eyed men tended to make others uneasy. Strange, but true.
"Might I join you?" Looking at the large man, I smiled slightly, a gesture that probably appeared out of place on my lips. "I would be obliged to stand."

Perrin 935 pm or thereabouts

Perrin is amazed to see Fern calm the men at the next table down with only words. He has always relied on brute strength and raw courage to get him through any sticky situations. He feels even more of a kinship with this beautiful woman that has shown him other ways to stop conflicts. Perrin gets back up, not to start a fight, but to offer Fern his chair. After she sits , he leans over and whispers in her ear that he is sorry he caused this trouble.
Perrin can see the other bar patrons starting to place bets on the outcome of a fight that might break out. But Perrin is determined to keep the peace that Fern has so adroitly brokered. He takes his hands away from his weapons and places them behind his back.
Perrin sees another man approacing the table. He looks familiar and then Perrin recognizes him as another person that had checked out the bulletin out front. Perrin sees the man take his hand from his sword and relaxes. He motions to the waitress to bring them another pitcher of ale for their table.

Halia 10pm

I breathe a sigh of relief as the young girl calms the situation down. Amazing what blond hair and a pretty smile can do, especially if its accompanied by an offer of free drinks.
Then I hear someone else speak behind us - a man - he speaks to Perrin offering his help. That seems to cinch things for the group of noblemen, there ae now five of us and by the looks of this new arrival we make a fairly intimidating group.

I turn away from the incident to study him better, tall although he is nowhere near Perrins height he will top me by a good few inches. Long brown hair definately a fighter but most interestingly a patch over one eye - an affection? or does he lack sight I wonder.

It is getting crowded and if we are to discuss matters reasonably then we can hardly have two members of the group standing,
'Jese, now that we seem to have settled this minor squabble between the boys do you not think that a private room might be a good idea?'

Fern 9.37pm ish

The group begin to settle although there is still an atmosphere of tension, partly aided by a group of bystanders urging a conflict and chanting 'fight' 'fight'.

I return to the table at which Perrin and the others are gathered, Perrin rises from his chair and offers it to me, his huge frame leaning over me as his whispers his apology in my ear.

I smile up at him, 'Just keep your back to the wall', I advise 'I don't think there will be any trouble, but youthful spirit, bruised egos and drink are not the best ingredients to mix'

I sit at the table and for the first time, I am among new people. The woman I recognise from earlier as being the one responsible for the poster. The other, a woman in her mid twenties with short dark hair playfully spins a dirk as she watches the young men cautiously at the other table.

'Hey there I'm Fern', I say introducing myself, 'Are you guys all signing up too'

As I speak a tall warrior emerges from the shadows, I glance up at him nervously as he approaches the table his hand grasping his sword. My apprehension drops as his hand falls away from the weapon and he introduces himself as Fledgrin Sorrow. He wears a patch over one eye, something I had seen before, a old fighter tactic to preserve night vision when moving in and out of well lit rooms into shadows.

I look up as he speaks, 'Hi Fledgrin', I say responding to his announcement.

The party of young nobels seem to quiet down, the odds now 5-4 against them in terms of numbers, slowly the bar begins to resume normal business.

'So who are the rest of you guys', I ask

'My name is Halia' I say in answer to the girl who has just introduced herself as Fern
'If you will all excuse me for a moment I will see if we can get a more private room to discuss matters further'
I get up offering my chair to Flegdrin the newcomer and try to see the barman or innkeep through the crowds

Fern

'Hi Halia, that might be a good idea', I reply as the girl suggests finding a more private venue for our meeting.

'I have a room here which we could use if you like', I look at the others gathered around the table and wait for a response.

Adraste Pharyen

~~Time: Morning to Meet time of the 2nd day~~

After spending the early morning hours working in the bakery. Ad walks across the way to the jeweller's to sell her goods. A ruby gold ring & a pair of ear bobs. She haggles with the clerk & comes away with a small pouch of coins. 'Not bad for a weeks work.' She thought to herself.

Ad spends the rest of the day in the bakery making provisions for her journey. Freena comes into the kitchen as she packs away some flat breads. "Ye be goin' on a trip Addy." She looks up at her. "Aye Freena. I am gonna answer that help wanted note in Firewater." She then tosses the bag of coins to her. "Take this as payment for the food goods I be takin' & the pies to feed the lil ones."

Freena slaps the bag down on the table. "Ye not be payin' me for yer provisions lass. Ye be like a daughter to me, I be feedin' those rugrats for ye till ye come back. Pay me then if need be." Ad takes those few steps to give her a hug. "Aye, ye be like the mum I didn't have."

Ad places the pouch of coins on her person. She gives Freena one last hug before sliping her pack on her back & heading out the back way. She turns to look at her & the place she has called home for the past few years. "Shade & sweet water, Freena." She wipes her face with her apron. "Aye Addy, shade & sweet water. Safe journeys & ye come back in one piece ye hear." Ad smiles. "Aye I will." She waves her hand & heads out to the main road & Firewater's.

"Addy! Addy! Where ye be goin'." A chorus of voices are heard in the ally way. "I be goin' travelin' Freena will take care of ye. I be back soon. Be good & stay safe." She call out not looking back. "Shade & sweet water Addy, safe journeys!!" Voices cried back.

She makes her way across the road to the tavern. Voices are hear in Firewater's chanting "Fight, fight." Ad slips into the mainroom. 'It's busy tonight. A thieves delight. But not for me this night.' She sighs.

Then makes her way, slowly over to where a group of noble men <snort> sit with hands on swords. She gets closer & see the one called Jeselynn & two others she notice from the eve before with another. She can not make out what is being said but the warrior from the day before also joins the table. The fops back down & go back to there drinks.

Ad get close enough to hear the blonde woman speaks. "I have a room here which we could use if you like." She approaches the group. "Pardon me, is this the group for the notice on the board?" She motion to the Help wanted board. "I hope, I am not too late to journey with ye? Forgive my manners, I am Adraste Pharyen of Freeport." She bows. Her hair slides away revealing that she has some elven blood in her vains.

Evening at bar

Watching with great care. I stand up and ask everyone to follow me.

'I have a room down the hall, it is protected from prying people.'

Turning and walking to the stairs. I look to see everyone following.

Handing the barkeep a small pouch and saying, 'Rounds of ale for everyone.'

Noticing that everyone is waiting, I start back to my room. Gathering chairs from the hall they all enter and we go about introducing eachother and letting everyone get to know everyone else..

Pulling out maps and going on to show the planned outline of our travel...

Standing up again, I remove my hood and cape, look around the room and Study everyone.

'are there any questions as of now.. The meeting will be tomorrow night, incase someone still would like to join, But i suspect our group will leave in 2 days early in the morning and I would like a list of supplies you will need personally.'

My eyes studying everyone, and waiting for a response

Once we are in the room, I allow myself to relax some, though the large man makes me a little uncomfortable, though it appears he means well. In cases like these, men have been known to impede, their intentions negative in nature, and if there was one who would prove a task to bring down, it would be him most likely. I settle back inot one of the chairs, remaining silent and scanning my new associates as well as my new surroundings, realizing that in this room, a fight would be more difficult. In the tavern, things would have been complicated by others interfering, drunks and whatnot not knowing any better. Those people can be an advantage when numbers were not in your favor, and the large man had already befriended the girl he'd borrowed (without permission) the chair for. Until I knew the nature of this quest, I would have to keep my eye open.

Fern

The woman pulled out a plethora of paper work, maps and sundry and began to explain the route she proposed to take.

She continued to blather for about 10 minutes and then asked if we had any questions.

'Actually yes I do?', I replied as the woman stood up removing her hod in the process.

'I don't think we've been introduced, whats your name?', I asked

'Secondly, your explanation seemed a little patchy there I really didn't follow it much at all.
What is this quest? An Object? An Assassination?
How far will be be travelling?,
Will we need horses?
Will we need any mountain gear, warm clothing?
Are we travelling through Elven lands?
How long is the journey?,
How much food will we need?
Will we be travelling openly or undercover?
Will we be stopping of at town inns or camping in the wilderness. What's in this for us?
Do we get a percentage?'
Is there anything we should know about the people this quest is run for?

I stop realising that I could roll of hundreds of such questions, but those I mentioned really seemed pertainent to me if not everyone else and wait for some replies.

Interesting, the girl Fern has thought of several questions - obviuosly an expereinced adventurer.
To be honest; room, board adventurea dn the prospect of some pay at least is almost enough for me - almost but not quite there are a few checks I want to do but they have little to do with anything mentioned by the others. I don't sense any evil intentions from this elf or the others in the room. One of my reasons for suggesting a private room was that it would enable me to do a surface scan more easily.

'well i have a horse, weapons and clothing suitable for a nstandard winter. If we are goign into deserts or mountains immediatly I should do some shopping'
I look over at te elf who has commisioned the party
I assume you are travelling with us - and that you will provision the party. If you are prepared to supply us with weapons etc that we might require I would like a bow to replace my own lost one and vellum and ink if possible. So Jese do we head North, East South or West out of here?'

Surface Scan !!

OOC - Whats a Surface Scan? Is that a Spell.

It's not considered polite to cast or use magic on fellow party members without their consent, even though you may know a characters alignment from REAL world discussions and text in the Game a character will guard his alignment carefully, just a thief would be cautious about using secret signs with strangers.

The only way I know of in AD&D to determine Good or Evil unless you are a Paladin, is if a Detect Good/Evil Spell is cast or Heaven forbid 'Know Alignment'

Both these spells can be cast by a 1st Level Cleric.
Only Detect Good/Evil can be cast by a Lvl 3 or Higher Magic User.

There are magical devices such as amulets and rings that can negate the 'Know Alignment' Spell, Both spell have no saving throws.

Hi snork;
thought the quote below might clear thing up a little also I have cleared Halias (quite minor) magical abilities with the GM before posting. A surface scan is a sixth sense version of the kind of body language checking that we all do. It is not a spell - telepathic ability has developed as a sixth sense not as clear or focused as the other five but working int he same way.
All halia did was concentrate to see if she could spot any signs that anyone present had hostile intentions. I would say she got about the same amount of information as Flegdrin would if he used his enhanced instincts.

"Another result of the source is that nearly every child born over the past two centuries has basic magic abilities however being isolated has meant that traditional spellcasting has died out and most people retain only very basic spells such as fire and light; however they have enhanced latent telepathic abilities and elemental magic. "

OOC:
The sort of abilities you are describing are refered to as Psionics in AD&D and again they are governed by a set of rules and criteria. In addition you may find that PC's (Player Characters) may not want to adventure with Psionic enabled characters because they 'broadcast' to other Psionic creatures like a homing beacon, and Psionic Creatures are something I wouldn't want to come up against as a first level character.

I thought we were playing this with in the realms of First Edition AD&D rules that was the reason I was attracted to the thread basically because it has a well balanced and defined rule set.

It seems that isn't the case. I was unaware that you had already agreed your 'psionic abilities with Jeselynn' so I apologise for bringing any of this up.

I don't recognise the quote by the way - which manual is that taken from ?

I think this is turning into an X-Men Thread should we all pick a 'special' non defined ability?

Perrin hears the man introduce himself as Fledgrin Sorrow. He notices the eye patch and wonders how much that would slow him down in a fight. He hears Halia ask the others if they should go to a private room. He agrees, this room could turn ugly in no time. Perrin is suprised when another person joins the party. This newcomer has a compatent look about them. Perrin follows the four women and the new fighter up stairs to the room that Jeselynn. Perrin winked at the nobles at the next table before being the last to mount the stairs.
When they are in the room, Perrin opts to stand. He has already caused enough trouble with chairs this evening. He leans up against the wall, crossing his arms before him. He tries to stay interested in all that is being said, but it does not interest him. He has already given his word that he had joined, so he was not concerned with the details. He perked up when Fern asked some questions that he would not have thought of in a lifetime. He was impressed with the working of such a mind, especially since his mind was not the best.
When Jeselyn looked at him when she mentioned supplies, he shook his head no. He said to her "All that I need would be some food, I have enough weapons as fits my needs. A horse would also help if you plan to travel far. "
After this , Perrin leans his head back against the wall, trying to stay awake . His belly is full for the first time in weeks and his head is blunted with ale. Now all he needs is some sleep.

OOC: Ok, I think that I am caught up now.

As the others announce their needs, when they had any, I sit and wait. When the room quiets enough for me to speak without having to raise my voice much, I reply, "Mostly food and whatnot will do, and perhaps a bow, though I haven't used one in some time. Otherwise, I am prepared."

OOC: Snork Maiden, the quote is from her character profile. The magic source on the island she's from, unless I'm mistaken.
We need to decide what parts of the rules we're discussing are pertinent enough to clarify and get that out of the way on the OOC thread...posting too much OOC on a normal thread slows the fluency far too much to have it in every post and expect it to survive.
So long as I know what's going on, I could care less who has what ability and what manual they got it from...
I'm enjoying this.

Jeselynn in the room with everyone at 9:45pm 10 o'clock

nodding at Fledgrin, and looking around the room...

'We shall leave the morning after the meeting, tomorrow, I should like to make everyone comfortable.'

Hopeing everyone was clear, I pulled out maps and traced our route .. south out of the city and then to the southeast towards the green hills of the valley.

NO MORE OOC OVER HERE!

Thank you Jese - that is clear where and when we are going. Now if everyone will excuse me I am heading towards somewhere to sleep. I would like to arise early tomorrow to pick up a few things before we leave'
I look aroudn the room at the others and smile
'If anyone else cares to do a little shopping I'll be heading for Travellers Goods and Coven in the monring'

Fern

I listened to the Elf's explanations following carefully the route planned as she drags her slender finger across the parchment map laid out infront of us. I draw a my lips together and ponder.

Not being completely satisfied that any of my questions had been answered if not avoided I announce, 'It is a very interesting journey but I feel its not for me so I shall have to withdraw from the expedition.

I turn to Perrin who is leaning sleeply against the wall, 'My good friend, it has been brief but pleasant.' I unclip my until now concealed silver necklace which holds a small iron horseshoe symbol. I Bless him (spell) and press the necklace into his hand. 'Take this small token maybe it will bring luck and safe journeys, your kindness and gentle spirit is your greatest hidden strength may the Gods look on your deeds with favor and guide you in times of peril, and if you should pass the Dalelands, watch for a hunting Hawk'

I turn and bid the rest of the party a safe and prosperous venture before retiring to my room.

10 o'clock pm as everyone is leaving.

'I look forward to seeing you all again in the morning.' I said and asked if everyone had a place.

As I went on I told them to eat more food if they wanted and searched in my bag for a pouch ... finding it I dumpe dit contents into my hand and as everyone started to leave for the night I handed them a palm-sized stone with a star etched onto it's surface, in the center it has a small colored stone. All seemed to glow clear as I placed one in each person's hand.

'These will glow if magic is present, or if you are lost from the group ... it will lead me to it's owner.'

10.15 outside inn

walking outside I sigh and strech, 'might as well head off and bed down' I mutter to myself.
This looked like an interesting group, the brawny fighter, a theif (my pardon to the girl but that was definatly what I felt she was) the elven magic user, myslef and the other man - Fledgrin. The eyepatch was real I had watched him, and the way he moved left no doubt. He had no sight in that eye and it had been some time since he had.
I shivered slightly, missing eye or no he still seemed to see everything and more that was going on around him. This would be an interesting trip.

I took the stone graciously, then bowed out, following Halia into the street.
"Have you a place to stay?" I aksed. her. SHe seemed the loner type. It was only polite, when going na journey together to offer a gesture of kindness to a new companion.
"I have set-up a small camp outside of town...much cheaper than an Inn."
