Halloween Contest Support Thread

It so happens Jackie Gleason's one of my all-time favorite comedic artists, so I'll take that as a compliment. Great way to kick off the day. But after this?

So we have four days left to submit? Sumbitch. Unlikely. Not impossible. Unlikely. On the other hand a hurried disjointed creature could be a fine last place contender.

C'mon! You can do it!

Unbelievable...

Truly, they need a better way to score these contests.

I know. I agree. And I'm sorry they single you out.

But I swear to god, if you would just STOP talking about it... or, if it's too late for that (and it may be, now...) Just post under an alt for the contests. If you have a story you REALLY think is a contender, use an alt instead of BFW. So you have a few less points in Survivor? So what? By your own admission, you have so many stories socked away it doesn't matter, right?

The only way to prove your theory, BFW, is to take a story you really think will win, and use an alt to post it.

Well, mine's finally in. I thought the deadline was the 20th, so I'd more or less given up on my other idea. I may ressurect it since I have a couple more days to finish it. I always enjoy writing insane people, and Stephen is so far off his rocker that he isn't even in the same room with it *laugh*

The one I just submitted is so niche that it will probably be lucky to pick up 10 votes, let alone 25 :p

Crap! I've still got time to enter? Woohoo! I might even get this idea finished in time.

Mine won't be eligible to win, but it'll be fun to be in it if I can get there.

It's gonna be dang short - just on 750 now and not much further to go - and non-erotic.

Damn, mine's still pending. I was so looking forward to looking in on the carnage right now :p Guess I'll have to wait until I get home from work tomorrow at who-knows-when.

C'mon! You can do it!

Well, I found a thing I'd written to send to a magazine, but never got around to sending it. That was practically already done, so threw that one out. Not very erotic.

Then the idea that just came a few days ago, just submitted a version of that, but it isn't there. Isn't quite it. And not very halloweeny or erotic. Maybe psychologically nightmarish, satirically.

Why not. Hm?

So when they say no later than the 22nd, does that mean midnight the 21st or midnight 22nd?

That is actually quite difficult to define, since ghosts, demons, witches the devil, asf also appear to be accommodated in NonHuman or Sci/Fi/Fantasy even.

I would say everything scary, but then again I suppose writing about my heating bill wouldn't really fit into that category despite that definition. Additionally, psycho killers might qualify for Erotic Horror also, unless it is snuff, in which case it would be rejected anyway.

Thanks PP! I forgot about non-human. I'm a bit worried that if not one person died a grisly death, it ain't EH :D I thought they might change the category, but they didn't, and have posted it within 24 hours. Now I can't blame the trolls for all of the bomb votes!

Next time, I should write an EH story based on non-stop computer generated electricity bills where the computer has mind control abilities and additional functionability - er attachments - included. :rose:

Carnage is the perfect word. Do you think Complete Competition Carnage aka CCC will take off? :D

That sounds like a great idea. :D

And carnage is the right word btw, I had a quick look around yesterday to see the extent of the trollfest and from what I could gather there are roughly twenty stories out of I guess 110 or 120 stories submitted that got an H.

At least that worked wonders for my paranoia, so I am probably not being singled out and only have to worry about the strange noises in my house from now on.

Contest Scoring

Hi guys

I'm new to literotica. I posted my first story in the Halloween Contest and I'm not sure how the scoring works. I know you have to get at least 25 votes but beyond that I'm lost.

Can you give me a bit of help?

Thanks

Well, the highest possible score is a 5, the lowest possible a 1. People who like your story will either vote with a 4, if they found something they felt could be improved, or a five, if they really liked it. People who dislike your story will vote below that, either because they are sincere and something bugged them, or because they are so-called trolls, who feel that no-one should enjoy a decent score. There are of course personal trolls, who feel that this applies only to you.

The "H" or "Hot" behind your score appears when you have an average score above 4.50 and a minimum of 10 votes.

To win the contest, you'd probably needed a score of 4.85 - 4.9x before, but this contest seems to be different so far, depending on what happens after the sweeps. The sweeps are measures from the site owners to eliminate troll and illegal votes - how they exactly work, no-one knows for certain. I suspect larger sweeps we will see towards the end of the contest.

Hope this helps.

Yes, you need a minimum of 25 votes. Then, the three highest scores win. Usually in the 4.80's win but you could win with lower. If you are above the 4.50 mark, your story will have a red H next to it.

Hope this helps and welcome to the contest.

Hmmm, how to summarise a lit contest in less than 50 words... :D

* You need 25 votes to be eligible to win
* If you notice a lot of undeserved "1" votes or "5" votes, these are commonly referred to as being donated by kindly trolls that are either a bored reader, a contestant really wanting to win, or obsessively loyal fan (whether encouraged to troll or not), or <insert other popular conspiracy theory here>.
* Sweeps - when literoticalgoes through and clears out some of the troll votes
* Ogg's support thread - standard operating procedure to laugh over score dives, console other contestants, sigh over writer's block, encourage others to finish their story before the deadline, gasp over some authors ability to write 10 sequels for the contest, and so on.
* don't expect to win
* don't expect to lose - just as coverted spot as winning around here
* don't enter to win (or lose - I know who you are!)
* in no way think your score reflects your writing ability - unless you score 4.5 or above and get a little 'H' for hot
* expect supportive public comments as well as vitriol (and if you entered the contest with a loving wives category, I am going to assume you want vitriol :D)
* read as many other contestant stories as you can and comment and vote
* sit back and enjoy the ride

If I forgot something, someone else will remember to tell you :D

munachi,
thanks for the oh so generous review. I have an idea the point of slight confusion. The girl falls to the floor, and then a couple paragraphs later she falls again. I submitted an edit in which one of her falls is omitted. Although, for the sake of creepiness, I did consider leaving it, so she falls twice within three or four paragraphs. Had it been a movie... yeah... thanks again. I want to try and finish something before the deadline, then I'll go and catch up on the reading.

Midnight the 22nd.

So write, wriiiiitttttte, wriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittttttttttttte!!! :D

Yeah, will do, except all the libido tanks were pretty much emptied last night. Thought I left at least a few drops to start something this morning, but... no. So the libido tanks are out now, at the libido station, being refilled. Expect them to return... ohhh, this evening sometime, all full and primed and ready to go. Rev up and go for one of those far-flinging all-nighters that lasts into the wee hours of dawn, because we all know there's nothing like pouring a fresh pint of libido juice first thing in the morning. Hm. They might be ready quicker than I expected. Love them fumes too.

Write the nonerotic stuff first ;)

:(My story won't be finished by the 22nd. I haven't gotten chapter three back from my editor yet and it's taken on a life of it's own, the story. Sigh. I suppose that I have a hard time writing a short story.

Ah well, it's fun writing anyway, it's what I love to do.

I was a little worried about what is acceptable in story by way of violence. I have a new story that posted last night that ends with a suicide. I wanted Chapter 2 of that story (The Untold Story of Hell) to be in the contest. If they wouldn't have accepted the first chapter, that would've sucked.

Another story of mine that will post tonight includes a murder, so I was a little worried about that one too. But, I guess it's okay to have that kind of violence in a story if it's not too graphic.

I don't expect either story to be a contender to win, but they were fun to write.

What does a 3 vote say now? Since they changed the scoring, my scores have dropped significantly on new stories.
I need to go check what a 3 says--

Okay, when you hover over the 3 it says, "I liked it- Keep on writing."

By the old scoring system, I would have taken a 3 as a sign that the reader didn't really like it or there was something that they felt could be improved. So, even though my newer scores that are on the low side are above a 3.0, to me that is like saying the readers didn't like the story. But, technically, it doesn't necessarily mean that.

Has anyone else's scores dropped since they changed the voting system?
I've only gotten H's on a few stories since then.
