Halloween Contest Support Thread

Yep, it's changed the "H" landscape considerably!

It also doesn't help that there is a faction around that doesn't want anyone from the AH to ever win another contest. I think a lot of the low ball scores are coming from that direction.

The last sweep of the contest should tell the tail. At least i hope so.

I imagine that's true.

There's a Halloween poetry contest in the Poetry Feedback & Discussion forum right now. I like the way they handled it. The entries have been posted anonymously. I think that might be a better way for the seasonal contests to be held.

When I first thought about it, I thought maybe it wouldn't be good. We used to get more attention to all our stories when entering a contest. While that was true last year, I haven't seen any extra action on my stories this year.

munachi,
thanks for the oh so generous review. I have an idea the point of slight confusion. The girl falls to the floor, and then a couple paragraphs later she falls again. I submitted an edit in which one of her falls is omitted. Although, for the sake of creepiness, I did consider leaving it, so she falls twice within three or four paragraphs. Had it been a movie... yeah... thanks again. I want to try and finish something before the deadline, then I'll go and catch up on the reading.

yes, that was the part that confused me... other than that it was a great story... very creepy... will see if i read your edited version again, though i guess first i will try to catch up with the other stories...

how is that with edited stories, do the comments and votes remain, or are they taken off?

comments and votes remain. But I don't know if edits in times of contest appear with the rapidity of first-submitted stories. 'Cause I have another pending, which really needs a second part, but I already found similar inconsistencies in the first, and submitted a hurried/harried edit for that one, so it will fit better with the next... no big deal in normal times, but in these times? Time is a factor. But there's still some fifty hours to play with. Plenty of time, plenty of time.

I've had a contest story edit go through same day by noting in the edit that it was a contest entry I was editing, with the tag. May have just been good luck and good graces from the powers that be, though.

Mine goes up at midnight, and then the tiny number of low votes I'll get can start rolling in *laugh*

The target audiance on this one is just miniscule.

Ah! Note in the box! Good tip! Didn't think of that. Did it. We'll see. Thank you.

I must have the same market for mine. The score is fine but I don't seem to be attracting very many readers. I'll be lucky to get to 25 votes the way things are going. I wouldhave thought erotic horror would have a decent following.

If that's the case, that would explain my increasing votes and reads while my score steadily declines.

A last minute vacuum of troll dreck may at least get my score above 4.1.

Good luck everybody. :D

Even in a contest, you'll be lucky to pick up 25-30 votes in Erotic Horror. Anything more than that is a fantastic showing ( final totals, after all the sweeps ).

Unless there's a lot of gore, you acually get a larger readership in Sci-Fi/Fantasy or Non-Human, if either of those apply. Even then, you're looking at probably 40-50.

Horror, Humor, and Novels/Novellas have about the lowest core readership on the site. Perhaps TS/Crossdressers. Can't speak to that, as I've never written one.

Mine didn't have much in the way of blood, fear, etc., so I put it in Fantasy. Technically, it's also Non-Human, but that's probably questionable to the average reader, so I just went with the most common denominator.

The problem with mine is that the subject matter is pretty narrow. Unless you share the interest that inspired me to write it, it's probably not going to resonate.

Even then, some who do get into it will probably pan me for playing fast and loose with some of the mythology and timeline *laugh*

Too many details for the average reader, but it's what I wanted to write :D

Hey... where you been lately? I've noticed you've been MIA for at least a month or so.

Letters/Transcripts. That's a quiet one too.

I'm going to pout now, cuz it doesn't sound like you wrote one of your MST stories...

On mine the votes and reads are going up steadily but the score is dropping slowly. It's already one of my lowest scoring stories ever. Loving wifes is always a hard sell. LOL
Probably a pretty fair vote score though. I don't think I've been swept but don't know for sure.

Unfortunately, I'd say the LST3K series is officially sitting in a glass case. The response to the last two was lackluster at best, so I guess it's run its course. Didn't really have anything to spoof. Still had quite a few donations, but I just wasn't getting that central theme for the riff that's necessary to get one moving. Certainly had exhausted all the Halloween-themed ones.

Lotta fun, though, and The Fandom Menace was a frikkin' hoot :D

As to MIA, part of that is carry-over from a serious blow back in February that I haven't, and won't get into on the forum. It's interrupted my already minimal sleep patterns, which makes it pretty difficult to write. Then I wrenched something in my left ( dominant ) shoulder, which made about anything excruciating. On muscle relaxers now, which helps, but I'm still going to be half-crippled every day after work until I can take some time off after the first of the year. And on that note, they moved my start time at work back 2 1/2 hours, completely eliminating what was probably 1/4 of the sleep I was getting after putting the young one on the bus.

That's the short version.

Otherwise, not much more than political topics lately. I read, but don't join the discussion here. I get that out of my system elsewhere. Never have been one for the game/social topics, so that pretty much wipes out the forum until after the election *laugh*

Okay, back to work on Merchant Princess and SOTM. The lag between chapters on those is abominable *sigh*

I guess I'll just have to go back and reread the ones you wrote.

You're left-handed too? I knew I liked you for some reason...

I'm afraid I'm a foil to the old "Left-handed people are in their right mind" adage, though.

Can't operate scissors in my left hand to save my life, either.

It'll tank.
It's non-erotic, profoundly short (a certain prolific writer around here is bound to make something of that ) and I haven't even proofread it

Why not ... everything else seems to be

My entry has, by far, the lowest score of any story I've ever submitted
