Hey, gun nuts!

heh...guess that's why dad called it that.

Thanks for the advice on trap loads but I don't shoot for sport, dear. Outside of practice, if I ever have to fire that thing I expect somebody is going to be punished. That's why I still have it. (Well, that and the fact that the beat up stock is still silky smooth and I know that's in part from the oils in my dear dad's hands. He loved that gun. I don't think I could ever sell it.)

This is such a sweet post. I love the idea of your affection for the gun being based in part on him still being literally a part of it.

Do not throw out that old fridge.....

That's actually a good idea. A decent level of camouflage in a cluttered basement.

I can not take credit but it is a decent idea.

The only two Issues/improvements I see are:

How you build a lock to make it secure ( something better than a pad lock)
How to get rid of that old fridge smell.
How to turn the door in to a pistol holder.

I dont know if you guys are into the old stuff, but I just picked up and 1820s belgian charleville musket. It was cut down in the 1840s and modified from flint to percussion lock. It was probably sold on the civilian market as a shotgun. The wood and lock is absolutely gorgeous. Good chance it was used in early parts of the civil war

How fucking cool is that? I was looking i to a Baker rifle (I'm a huge fan of Sharpe and thought it would make a cool wall hanger) but I guess the fate your Charleville suffered is super common; a whole lot of flintlocks were converted to percussion.

Range report:

1) The 1898 Springfield (Krag 30-40) fires sweetly. The action is smooth like butter and the trigger breaks beautifully. She was as accurate as I could ask after I sussed out the sight picture, which is weird. The front blade is tiny and dark, pretty hard to see. The magazine is pretty easy to load, too; you just chuck the rounds in and snap it closed. Back to the wall for her, though. She'll be a special-occasions shooter only, I think.

2) My new baby, the Ruger Gunsite Scout (bolt, mag-fed, .308) is exactly what I wanted. Shoots great, bombproof, light, the sight picture is intuitive for me (it's very similar to the M4). Came with a ten round steel mag. I'll probably pick up a couple plastic fives for it. Adjustable length of pull as well as a nice cushy recoil pad.

3) I'm getting better with the PPK/S. I'm averaging around nine for ten into a head sized target at ten yards now. Took a while to settle the double action first shot down. Follow-ups on SA are not much trouble. She still doesn't feed especially reliably, though, so I'm also getting good at clearing malfunctions quickly. This was cheap FMJ today, and I'm wondering if she doesn't just have expensive taste.

Also, what the hell happened to the .308 supply? Is this an "Obama's gonna take away our guns" hoarders thing?

The conversion was common on just about all flintlocks. So was chopping (bubbaed if you will) of outdated military arms. Especially smoothbores. I just got a swiss k31. I havent shot it yet but the straight pull bolt is smooth as butter. Cant wait till it warms up.

As for the kreig, almost got one once. It was real cheap but had been bubbaed out. If I buy one I want it full milspec

Were these guns obtained legally, Perg, and are they registered with law enforcement?

There is no registration requirement...or even a structure by which to do so in most states. What makes it obtained legally? He could buy it from his neighbor or his old man could give it to him.....100% legal and no one would be the wiser.

And if I'm not mistaken perg lives in Vermont, where there is practically NO gun control whatsoever much less a registry.

There are the yellow sheets (or whatever color they are, now) that record transfers through FFL holders. I think they are still held by the FFL holder until his business is over and then they are supposed to be turned into the BATF.

I was poking fun at Perg with my comment.

Some people are wound up way too tight.

Yes, and no. There's no such thing as gun registration here. One was a private sale, one was inherited, and one was purchased at a gun show, complete with federal background check. And I wrote a check for it, so there's plenty of record of that one.
I'll be damned. I wonder what they want with one of the most common hunting rounds in the world. Oh, wait, I know. It's almost exactly the same as the round used by AK-47's.

I was lucky with this one. Lady P's uncle left it behind. I had to clean the fucking cosmoline out of it, and it's milspec. I talked to Springfield about it, and the park ranger was kind of excited for me. It's not in perfect shape, but it's pretty and I like having that little bit of history on the wall.

Oh yea...but that's only on FFL sales...private sales are legal and for all intents and purposes 100% free from gubbmint intrusion.

I looked into gettin an FFL when I was interested in opening a store/range witha few buddies and the one thing everyone said is record keeping is what get's 99.9999% of FFL's pinched and in hot water. That's what made me bail on the idea, I fucking hate paper work and I know how the gov likes their paperwork done....perfect or your fucked.

I'm still thinking about getting one once I save up enough cash and get in a comfy enough position in life to buy up at least a good portion of my wish list just to make things easier.....but right now and as a business platform...nightmare.
