Hey, gun nuts!

Sweet! Have you fired it at all?

Not yet and im not sure I will outside of blanks. Theres some pitting around the breach so I am going to have it scoped first. I got it for a steal sense the mainspring was broken. I took it to my uncle and he had a spare springfield 1842 spring. It fit with a little filing but between our work scheduales we havent been able to get together to test it. The nipple is broken as well and I cant get it free. Was gonna hit it with heat but when I dropped a ram rod down the barrel it didnt bounce so somethings in there

Still some work to do yet. Wish I could find what those markings mean.

Sounds like a fun project. One has to wonder what's down there. I hope it's a treasure map!

Still awesome, though. It's fun to hold them and think of all the battles they might have been in. I was looking at a Gettysburg-found cavalry saber a couple weeks ago, still all notched, and thinking what must have caused the notches.

Probably another saber. I noticed you mentioned sharps in an earlier post. A friend of mine has a sharps cabine he traced to gettysburg. They are fun as hell to shoot but a total pain in the ass to clean. If you want a cool carbine from that era go with a smith. Very similar to a break open shotgun and can be cleaned in about a minute. I want one but a repro is around 700 and an original goes for around 1200. Dont have that kind of cash for a smoke pole.

Or musket barrels, yeah. Thanks for the info, though a minor point: I probably mentioned the character Sharpe, from Bernard Cornwell's fiction. He uses a Baker, which I'd love to get ahold of. This latest rifle purchase has probably put me on pause for firearms, too, though.

Private firearms transfers are illegal in California.

Really? What if your dad dies, your mom doesn't want them, and you end up with a couple of guns by default. That's what happened to me. Would I be a criminal in California?

Yup I did misread. Atlanta cutlery sells bakers but they are all in rough shape. Probably not fireable. With some work they would make a beautiful wall hanger.

A couple? What's the other one?

it's been a long day. I deserve a duh moment

I missed them in my googling. Thanks for the tip! I found one place that sells repros that only need a hole drilled from pan to chamber to fire. Seemed like the best bet.

It's a .22 rifle with a scope. Nothing fancy. Don't even know the brand. My cousin took it out last weekend and still has it or I'd go look at it right now. Off the shelf from Montgomery Ward (or somewhere like that), most likely from the 60s or early 70s, I think (before I was born, anyway). Dad used to take us girls out so we could plunk away at empty cans and such on my uncle's property. It was fun. Bolt action. Has an 8 round magazine. I've never researched it or anything. I do keep it clean.

Sounds like a fun little gun. Monkey Ward had their own stuff made for them: http://www.ncgunowners.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=298

Didn't you pick them up in Nevada?

Heck, I live in Illinois. I checked with a lawyer friend a while back and he says I'm okay here. I was just curious about the California law that Byron mentioned.

Thanks for the link, Perg. Got reading California gun law and eventually decided I don't care enough to pursue it all that far. Looks like I'd be in a gray area, though. It's legal to inherit a gun (through a legal process like the execution of a will) but since my mom survived everything became hers and she just gave them to me.

California law says it's okay to transfer between spouses but doesn't mention children. This might be the most relevant part:

The infrequent sale, lease, or transfer of firearms between individuals - meaning five or fewer sales per year of any number of handguns or irregular and occasional sales of other firearms is allowed. However, such sales/transfers must be completed through a dealer licensed pursuant to Penal Code section 12071.

There was certainly no licensed dealer involved so I'd probably be toast in the surfer state.

Oopsie-doodles...!

Sorry... I'm on it.

Gave one of the kids an '06 that came from Sears back on the 60's. It's really a Winchester model 70.

Might have been from Sears too. We had a Monky Ward, a Sears, a Jupiter's and a JC Penney all down on Main Street back then. All closed now, of course.

I would avoid those except for display. Ive heard horror stories of them exploding. They are made india in small shops. If you go that route have it proofed. My bad I was thinking bruswick when I said atlanta cutlery but they may have bakers too

I have a Sears .22 semi-auto rifle that was the first gun I ever hunted with. The tube feed mag will hold 15 long rifle .22 rounds. More longs, or shorts in high speed only.
