How do ya feel about God in the workplace?

More like "the world should be in such a way that people can express themselves religiously in the workplace as easily as they would express themselves familialy with pictures of their kids". Nothing wrong with that.

That would be nice.

But it would also be nice if there was a polite way to tell your co-worker that his kids aren't as cute as he thinks they are.

At work today I received an anonymous print-out of an email message about God. Whoever delivered it covered the names with white-out, although a sneaky, er, enterprising soul could probably find the source.

It talks about being cheery, and how you can get through tribulation to a brighter day, and blah blah blah blah.

I'm trying to figure out how to take this. It wasn't an email or a memo sent to everyone, it was something that was specifically dropped on my desk.

I imagine they have good intentions, but I can't help but be offended. A select few people at work know I'm struggling with the whole God thing right now, so this really seems like a slap in the face.

Plus, I'm not too certain of the legality of such things.

Any thoughts?

I haven't read any of the other responses yet, but this kind of thing gets me very angry.

I think religion is a strictly private thing. You decide with whom you share it and it has no place at all in public life. Not in politics, not in education and certainly not in your work.

If something like that happened to me, I'd be very, very angry.

Sounds like some misguided do-gooder to me. I would accept it as well-meant, and ignore it - but keep a copy.

If I received any more I would circulate copies to everyone requesting: Please confirm if this was sent by you. (I don't expect an affirmative reply by anyone as the sender was too gutless to identify themselves in the first place.)

Note to Sender: Obviously you have a big problem. I will pray to My Lord Satan that he takes your soul swiftly, so I'm left in peace.

The thought of you praying to Satan will but the shits up any religious freak.

Joe:

I'm all for God being in the work-place (The whole kit and caboodle of the many varieties.) All I would ask is that they pull their weight, and keep religion out of it.

Look carefully at the picture of his little girl, and gush, “Oohh! What a masculine little boy he is already!

If it’s a boy, “Oh, my! She’s going to be a heartbreaker. Such a sweet and feminine looking child.”

Eventually, perhaps, they will learn.

THAT, to me, is using God's name in vain.
I do not believe God is there to DO OUR bidding..a magic Genie!

I believe in prayer. BUT, i also believe that many "Christians" also mistakenly atribute some events (good and bad) to God's actions based on THEIR perceptions.

I think God COULD have a hand in awarding an account...(I believe that God does not meddle with that...I'll never know) but if God did it would be to HIS own purposes NOT because of some selfish prayers.

Dead on, Rhinoguy.

The arrogance of claiming the Lord as a partisan of your human purposes is not blasphemy, taking the Lord's name in vain, but idolatry, according to Hanafi and Shafi'i musilim jurisprudence (fiqh). You have set up a God you have yourself customized and transferred your allegiance and worship to it.

I don't mind him if he stays out of my way. Useless bastard.

I feel that God needs to be in my workplace.
For when I strangle my coworkers. He oughta be there to protect them. :p hehehe.

I'm a huge advocate for multiculturalism in practice. Always have been. Long time ago I had to accept that someone's ethnic culture and their religious culture were often the same thing (or parts of the same thing), it was then I had to open my mind to the idea that religious freedom for everyone--not its censorship--should be a social goal.

couldn't let this pass without saying-

This is incredibly flawed and narrowminded.

But a discussion of it doesn't belong on this particular thead.
I opened this thread especially so that you can expand on your comment. I'm interested.

Joe,

I have been working in a multicultural setting for more than 10 years. I am a teacher for adult refugees and my school houses over 100 nationalities. I think that qualifies as multicultural.

Rule number 1: no racist or discriminatory conduct is permitted
Rule number 2: no politics in the school
Rule number 3: no religion in the school
Breaking these rules is ground to get dispelled, permanently.

This means you can discuss your culture, your religion, your everything ad infinitum, if you want to and someone else is willing to listen. It is often encouraged in classes to enhance understanding of each other's culture.
But it also means advocating your beliefs is an absolute no-no.

Why do you think that is? Ever broken up a fight, you yourself, bodily, because of emotional disagreements? I have, it's not funny and it hurts like hell the day after.

Thank God (whichever one you care to pick) I am bigger than most of my students and none of them were carrying weapons at the time.

End of rant.

Try working for Proctor and Gamble.

They donate gernerously to the Church of Satan!

If it weren't for the stage dressing, I could get behind the Church of Satan. The ideas behind the Church of Satan really appeal to me. But again, I don't have any use for ANY organized religion. Instead, I can take the parts that appeal to me from anywhere and use them as I see fit.

Also, I bet Proctor and Gamble pay pretty well.:)
