If you look at the margins independently, Trump is ahead by 6.3 mm votes in those 44 states.
I understand that the reason the electoral college system was put in place was to avoid just that situation of a few powerfull heavily populated states being able to control the election through popular voting. This actually worked again this time as it did in 2000 Bush. I think, because you're looking from the outside, that you are putting too much importance on what a state is in the United States. We're a very mobile country. There are separate state governments, yes, and there are historical claims of a level of state autonomy. But they no longer mean beans in terms of being an American. That's part of what outmodes the Electoral College. We are much closer to a popular vote across the nation meaning something than we are to the separate rights of the states. The rural in the rural-urban split only made the difference in this election because a rural vote outweighed an urban vote. At the base, this isn't really an American concept of equality in voting power--every person one equal vote.
