It's been complicated for me to figure out friendships here. Sometimes they seem real and solid and then they evaporate with just a whimper. In RL I am slow to make deep friendships. I am loyal to those I call my friends.

There are some alphas, that would prefer to go it alone, equal in all ways that matter to a pack leader, with the distinction being, ...doesn't need or want a pack, with no desire/need to prove, test it at your peril, and just try and stop this lone wolf from doing or getting what it wants....thats my take

I want to do a quick survey this morning. I believe a quite a few people stop by to see the topic and follow the shenanigans. So for the survey portion of the post if you just lurk and enjoy, let us all know you're out there. I can't imagine what will happens is there's a semi-quantifiable audience number. Plus, I bet there's a large percent of people that some of us don't know. Always good to make new friends.

And why is that? Why do we never turn away making a new friend when yesterday we were quite pleased with who our friends are and how many friends we have. It's not like we sit down, assess and decide we need more friends or that we are good and get less friendly towards strangers. What is this need for friend accumulation?

Its biology, compatibilty with species and communication across wavelengths defined as professional, family, friend, acquaintance, lover, self awareness, conciousness, etc....more connections equal more communication of ideas influence of the cellular colony, which in turn equals at least potentially immortality. ...for us humans, its what we do making friends, influence, legacies, history.

The philosophies of Socrates and Plato touch us all today and have a direct influence on the civilization and behaviors of today. Achieving immortality, effectively, at least for the time I'm on the planet

I'm pretty guarded. Both here and in RL, I tend to keep people at arm's length for awhile before I consider them to be a friend. I think of myself as friendly, but slow to make friends.

My best friend and I met in first grade and I'm still close with numerous friends that I've had since middle school, high school and college. So once I make a friend, I'm in it for the long haul.

I used to be quick to make friends, but now I am very guarded and will hold almost everyone at arms length. I have a handful of close friends here that I have had for a long time, but I mostly interact with them on Facebook and/or real life.

I come back to this thread every now and then, not religiously like I once did. Sometimes I'll answer the question of the day, and sometimes I'll read the last page and then go on my merry way.

You basically come to see if I've posted something clever. Just go ahead and say it.

My favorite topic: behavioral science, specifically; the ways of the wolf. When one of a pack leaves or is pushed out, it becomes more fierce. In affect, it becomes an alpha. It becomes a lone wolf. Having to rely on oneself is harder, but that hardens you too.

The male lone wolf, typically creates a new pack with an female alpha lone wolf... or dies alone.

Luck. You hear all the time about people having good luck, bad luck, or down on their luck. So much references to luck you'd think it was a tangible thing. Or is luck just an excuse for not working hard enough or maybe even out working everyone? Do you make your own or are some people just "lucky". Or is luck even real?

There is luck. If you're the one who hits the lottery, the fact that those numbers come up on the exact game you play them...one in a bunch of million. So that's luck. But I think that most luck is all about being observant and leaving yourself open to possibility. When you meet the right guy...it's not luck. When a scientist makes a discovery. Not luck. Even if it came about because of a mistake. Are there serendipitous events that lead up to it? Maybe. But I think you make most of your own luck.

There is no such thing as luck.

That said, we use the term "luck" to express when odds seem to be stacked favorably or unfavorably, resulting in an overwhelmingly likely outcome.

I can't discuss this further without stepping on the toes of someones belief system.

Since I don't believe in any agency that manipulates odds one way or the other, I will say it is always tricky interacting with people who state a public outcry to sympathetically stack odds in their favor.

Prayers, luck, wish, and hope; all being useless terms subscribing to some manipulator of odds, leaves someone who doesn't believe in any such agency, very little to say.

I don't know if luck really exists, but I watched a fascinating show by Derren Brown (a British illusionist) on luck. It was so brilliantly done. He had people who considered themselves lucky and people who considered themselves unlucky. The experiment was to see if people really were lucky.

He set up opportunities in the path of both sets of people. Those who considered themselves lucky, embraced them. They were more open and aware of what was going on so they saw the opportunities. The unlucky fuckers just walked on by. Sometimes it was a simple test of a $20 bill being thrown on the ground in front of them. The unlucky people- they just walked right on by. It was fascinating.

So, what I drew from that is that "unlucky people" are those who just don't see opportunities in front of them. They don't notice the things in front of them.

I consider myself really lucky, if I need to use that term. Good things happen to me.

I do not think that luck is a tangible thing. But like the illusionist found with his two groups of people, it has to do with mindset, openness and the way people view the world. I think that two people could be given the same set of facts and one could see it as terrible "luck" and other as "lucky"

I too consider myself extremely lucky, in that good things happen to me. But I do not play the lottery and I rarely "win" things. I have been known to say that the lottery is a tax on people who can't do math.

Ah, luck.

We live in a world of statistical probabilities that drive most of our lives, far more than many people realize, in complex, chaotic and sometimes invisible systems. It's like a game of chess - everyone gets the same pieces and starts in the same place and some win and some lose and it all comes back to choices made earlier in the game. What most people think of as luck is probable outcomes based on previous choices.

But, when I think of luck, I tend to think of it as an unknown agency acting in the world that takes things that are statistically freaking highly improbable - and makes them happen to some people more often than others. That's the "fuck me, dumb luck" factor.
