NaNoWriMo 2005 - Join, write, be a novelist!

I don't get how NaNo works  Do you have to submit your work to the site or what?
Only at the very end of the month, or whenever you hit 50K words, whichever comes first.

You just write out your stuff like you would any other story/document/what have you, then send it end at the end of the month for the 'official' word count. You can go through and change letters and stuff if you're worried about anybody else getting ahold of it.

What ent said.

If you're worried about anyone nicking your work, you can just do a "find & replace" with a letter, or a word, that will make your work into nonsense. You're only running it through their word counter thingy, that's all, just to verify that you made the 50,000 goal.

You're only competing against yourself, which is really cool, because it doesn't limit the number of "winners" there can be.

I just realized I have something to do before NaNo....

I need to collect the information I have on my character I am transfering from my 2 erotic horror stories, would be stupid to have his hair change between stuff :)

But yeah! the forums are back up!

That good part, I've forced myself to do all my NaNo thinking on the treadmill, and I am not a fast thinker ;)

Thanks, Cloudy and Entitled for answering my question. I'm actually getting quite excited! :nana: This will be the biggest thing I've ever attempted to finish. I still can't decide whether I'm planning too much or too little... or even biting off more than I can chew. What I'm aiming for is a lesbian / science fiction / historical novel. If I can pull it off it'll be great, but it's going to be one hell of a challenge. How much planning is everyone else doing?

Scheh -some people do lots of planning, some none at all. I think i'm in the middle somewhere as i have a general idea written down ,and in the next week i'll get some vague idea of characters and names and flesh out the plan a little, but probably not much :)

I'm lookin forward to it!

Hi Ladies and Gentlemen, and good evening. I've got a question particularly for the ladies among us.

One of the leading characters in my potential Na No story is a young woman taken off the streets in Bradford and forced to work in a brothel. Now, being a clean cut young ? man of course, I know next to nothing about such subjects. Oh I'm aware that condoms are generally de rigeur in such establishments, only some of the girls in this brothel are hired out 'condom free' to medically checked clients.

For these girls I need a genuine brand of birth control pill. Any recommendations ? And a little advice as to the course of tablets required.

Best wishes,
Chris

hehe... i see you!

Ortho Tri-Cyclen is a fairly popular brand here across the pond. It's probably the most widely recognized, at least. They come in 30 day cycles if i remember correctly. It's recommended that alternative protection (condoms, sponges, etc.) be used for at least the first four months of taking a pill as added protection, as it takes the body a while to adjust to the unnatural levels of hormones.

Thanks Ent  I don't think the guys that run this place will be too bothered about alternative protection for the girls. they are 100% bastards. International traders in sex, they generally bring girls in from Eastern Europe, so they may well have access to 'Ortho Tri-Cyclen' At least, they will in this story.

Hugs, Chris

I dount they'd use anything that expensive :)

Generic 21 days hormones, 7 days no hormones are the cheepest pills. Other options would be depo provera shots, have a dr come in once every 3 months and assembly line inject them.

Other things would be a bit pricier, so I would think those 2 options would be the most believable

I like the assembly line analogy Alex, it has just the right level of disinterest in the real welfare of the girls, and if it's cheap, these guys would be only too happy. So thanks for the suggestion.

Take into account i'm a wiry little shit. There's power in them most people couldn't imagine without experiencing.

However, if you feel better in creating a circle, get it done.

Done, or at least started.

Plans? Plots? Characterisation?

Having a strategy for NaNoWriMo is a good idea but you can go too far.

The only thing necessary to complete NaNoWriMo successfully is to write 50,000 words in November.

If you set yourself a target of 2,000 words a day you should succeed.

Those 2,000 words CAN BE ANY OLD CRAP!

Next month you try to make something out of what you have written in November.

If you have several possible stories churning about in your head why not start all of them? The 50,000 words can be a whole set of ideas that you can use throughout 2006 as ideas for stories or as a basis for the great novel you always intended to write.

You can restrict yourself too much with plots and plans and forget the object - writing 2,000 words a day.

If you have overplanned - when your plan fouls up you will be floundering. Even at that point as long as you continue to write anything, even stream of consciousness stuff, then you can still complete NaNoWriMo and have something to use later.

I have to jump in here and agree with the King. The real purpose of Nanowrimo is to get yourself into the discipline of writing enough words every day to pump out a novel. No one is going to grade the quality of your effort. Besides, say you started the Great Novel on day 1 as a novel of intrigue and part way through you realize you are far more interested in one character than you expected. Keep writing - just write about what ever comes to mind. You've all heard about stories taking on a life of their own and going to places the writer never expected. Do that. Give in to your characters and watch where they take you. It may be the ride of your life – or at least your mind.

If they all get tired and decide to sit down and stare at you as if expecting you to come up with something new, then do it. Give them a new problem to deal with. Don’t play fair. Play Jerry Springer with them and reveal a secret one of them is keeping from another. Then step back so you don't get hit with the chairs and write down what happens.

You see, little Jack Horner did more than sit in a corner. I think he was hiding. Why else was he in a corner. He could have been sitting at the table in the kitchen. Which, is probably where he would have been if he had been given the pie to eat all by himself. And where did he get that Christmas Pie? Did his mother bake it? Or did she have to buy it? You know, piemen used to go down the street hawking their wares. Did Mrs. Horner need more than a pie? Was she starved for attention? Did she have difficulty controlling her urges? Or were the Horners poor? Did they even have two nickels to rub together (why do people do that – for luck)? How did Jack know he'd have time to hide and eat it? What was Mommy doing with the pieman to pay for the pie? Was Jack planning on blackmailing her? Or did he have a better plan? Maybe Daddy was going to run for public office – say the local Chief of Police. How would it affect his chances to get elected if his opponent got a picture from Jack’s camera phone? Is that why he said "What a good boy am I"? And if his scheme worked, what was his next exploit? Did he want to watch? Did he want to participate? Ah the ideas. Whenever you think of writer's block, demand a bunch of them. Then you can build your great pyramid of stories into that novel. All you need to do is type, type, type. And the next thing you know, you'll be there.

By the way, this post is exactly 500 words. It took twenty minutes for me to write. You can do it too.

I'm writin' naughty stuff, so I'm trying to figure out a character and then I'll just let the story wind up where it likes...but I have no inkling of a character just yet. :(

 With an AV like yours? There's a whole story right there in that picture. Those deliciously evil eyes look like they're hiding a whole lot of secrets about more than one person. ;)
