Old House Renovation Journal

Yeah as far as air Paslode is probably best. PC I like for the
routers and sanders. I had a PC brad gun and it wasn't
worth crap. They all have their specialties where they are
really good. Dewalt makes good drills and saws. I never liked
their sanders too much. Like you said, too light. I like a good
balanced feel like the PC and the real old Rockwells.
Do you ever get into making cabinetry and funiture? Are you
familiar with a magazine called Fine Woodworking? A lot of
cool stuff and well worth the money. I used to have a subscription to it, but got too busy I guess with what I do now.

I've got an older Campbell-Hausfeld brad nailer which won't quit - amazing for a cheapie, I think.

I've repaired some furniture, but never made any. My neighbor/friend (I got him to take the rear apartment here where we live - the landlord appreciated it, too) is thinking of building some chess tables - the design is still up in the air.

I know "Fine Homebuilding" - I used to subscribe. I find that a lot of their stuff is like "This Old House", in a way. I saw the TV guys installing wood flooring with a medium crown stapler one day, and haven't watched it since. My next investment is probably a spring-loaded floor nailer. I'm still nailing our porch floor by hand, and I don't do much of that any more.

Damn!!!! That last one was post #200. Who'd 'a' thunk it?

And we're not even framed all the way by a long shot, either.

I am not familiar with the C-H brad gun, but if its German that
explains why its good. Yeah most of the tv shows are geared
to the home do-it your selfers, so I don't watch em as much
as I used to. I like to watch for the new products sometimes.
I used to watch This Old House. They've had some cool old
homes on that show. 200 posts, Cool. Did you have to gut the
house completely? Nailing a floor by hand. Hard on the knees
and back. I guess I have gotten lazy and/or soft in the past
years. I have seen some nice air nailers I like. Is there a lot of
nice wood trim in the house?

Yes, the house was completely gutted. Fortunately, the owner had that done, save for trim removal, before we got there.

Because we have to "abate" the lead paint (too many Federal dollars involved, so we have to follow their guidelines), we removed the old trim. That's the bad news. The good news is that the oldest mill (founded in 1884, and still owned by the same family - Germans, too) in town still makes exactly the same moulding, so we'll be putting it back in kind. It was all painted anyway, originally, so painting it back, and in the same profiles, will make the place look like it did 80 years ago.

I use air every chance I get to fasten things. There's nothing worse than spending 20-30 minutes fitting a joint and marring the surface with a hammer face from missing a nail.

Or hitting the wrong nail. Ouch G** D*@#* M*&#$@* F*#*#*
And then turn aroun and see the guy his wife and the little kid
all standing there looking at you.
So all of the old wood is gone. Too bad. Yeah all the EPA laws
can make it tough. Out here we don't have em watching us on
stuff like that too bad. I just hate seeing hard wood going in
trash. I used to get a lot of oak out of old homes.

Well, all of the stuff we took down was pine, so it is no great loss. The mill we use runs pretty good stuff, and we compared their catalog to the actual trim, especially the pilasters at the windows and doors - it is identical. They may have run the original stuff 82 years ago, for all we know.

I'm a little miffed at the Federal standards for this crap. There are three regulatory agencies envolved - HUD, EPA and OSHA. What a pain, and we didn't vote for a single agency head, either - they are all appointees.

We also have a great old house parts salvage yard here. They are expensive, but if you cannot find what you are looking for new, they very well may have it. They also buy stuff from us jobbers, too. I have three sets of sashes and a complete window that I intend to take to them to sell.

I was going to pirate the three pocket doors out of this house - they will be sealed in the walls, reserved for future use. One is a 5/0-8/0 - friggin' huge. But it had been cut by an HVAC butcher with a sawzall years ago - what a waste. I'll leave the whole set - no point now.

I have a bunch of old router and shaper/moulder knives to make
"antique" moulding designs. The only time I have used 'em is
when a couple of friends come over for parts. They do old and
new home const.

I've been watching a new house go up on the local avenue I have heard described as "the embassy row of a nation that doesn't exist". They seem to be very sensitive to the architecture on the street, and also to be spending bucketsfull of money.

I'll bet that would be a neat new project to work on.

Staying out of trouble for the most part - so far. It could be a boatload worse.

Cleaned out my old truck - I've got to sell it or something. The tags expire tomorrow night, so I'm moving it to Mom's house. She has a huge driveway, and it won't bother her. The city tows stuff without all its papers being in order.

Thanks for the kind offer - we seem to have a distance problem, don't we?

I seem to have taken leave of my senses.

Why, Dear? Sanity can be so fleeting and tenuous. It is a relative term at that.

can you be teased

I'm not that tough, really. Crunchy on the outside, but a chewy center.

Seduced? I believe that such is possible - wracking my brain to try to remember when . . . .

you are so tough...

here let me look for my hammer so you can wrack some more....

I want you?

Take me now?

Or that it has just been too damned long????

Most, yes.

And, when she kicked me to the curb, all of that went away.

There has been no one remotely like her since.

In many ways, I have ceased to ask, "when?"

Most things come to me when I am not looking for them.
