OOC / Casting Call: Xavier Institute For Higher Learning

Alright, I've finally heard from everyone and it's been decided that we are going to keep moving on with the thread, however we are going to fast forward a few days after the "Kitchen Massacre With Non-Lethal Bullets" and either Shaq or myself will write up a Monologue as either Havok or Gambit setting up the new beginning.

Also, Gentli will be starting a Brotherhood Thread much like the Xavier one where villians can hang out. This thread will be where the villians side of the SLs will develope and Gentli and Ankara will be "policing" that one much like Shaq and I "police" the Xavier thread. If you would like to pick or create a low level Villian, once the OOC thread starts post your villian stats.

I had to do a system recovery and I'm just now reinstalling my wireless network stuff.

If Shaq doesnt respond to my email by Wednesday Im gonna post a summary with Gambit or Thad, then move the SL on.

With us loosing Ithica though we will need a strong Female to assume the role of Storm and lead the School and the Xmen.

To get back in the thread you would have to start a separate thread with someone to rp with you as an example of how you would rp.

Or you would have to figure out what went wrong with Magma in the in the last thread.

It's not like anyone is trying to be mean or anything, if there is a question about the correct and incorrect way to rp all one has to do is ask but its important that you understand the right way before you come back because last time there were a lot of problems with the way you post.

Solid post - I don't think we're too far removed from where Ank and I intended. I just PMed the chica, and we should have this train chugging along in the next day or two.

I'd like to apologize to everyone for this mess. While there were a few inevitable factors, I believe it was my idea to start off the SL with some action in the hub. I thought I could do a quick in-and-out, get people excited about it, and move on to our on thread. That blew up big time and we all suffered for it.

That's a "my bad" moment if I've ever had one.

It was like a student's perspective on the changes that had happened and I got the sense of the status quo resuming so we could continue.

Gentli dont beat yourself up about it. If you really think about it were doing a beta version of the Hub since it's never been done before so were still working out the kinks. Also when you make a Sl you cant see how everyone is going to react until it is usually too late and its set in stone which is what we got caught up with.

Nah it wasn't your fault.

The first achilles heel of the last thread was how to conduct battles.

The first "red flag" was over a battle (magma drop kicking juggernaut and sending him tumbling lol)

And the exact same thing happened again.

From what I was able to see you and Ankara had some wicked ideas going. It's funny cause with all that's happened we still have established a pretty good commentary on X-Men in this thread with 4 separate instances of the X-Men "Opening their doors" and it blowing up in their faces.

Cause Political Correctness Sucks

I'll be bold. There have been two reasons for delays or lags in the X thread. One of the reasons has been player unavailability (vacay, work, etc) the second bad posts. The first is inevitable but the second correctible.

The bad posts have pretty much centered around 2 things.

1. Creating An Original Character-

Since we don't have any new applicants for original characters I won't go into this one much but the second one is a doozy.


2. Bad RP Battle Post

This has been the BIG one that has caused problems in the thread. There will always be disagreement over posts. I remember the Fatale kidnapping Psylocke move. It was one that even while I made it I could acknowledge it was a debatable move whether or not it would or could happen.

But then there are some moves that aren't debatable they are just plain bad whether due to ignorance about the scope and limits of the involved characters powers or ignorance over the nature of online rps.

"Say his name! Say the motherfucker's name!" Tupac on "Against All Odds"

Ex: Magma, a energy manipulator with a normal body, punting the Juggernaut like he was a football.

So, in order to help make others aware of what constitutes a bad battle post I turn to the ever helpful wikipedia for explanation on this matter.

Meaning: Making your character supremely powerful or invincible

Examples of this:

Professor X puts Magma in a telpathic hold. Magma simply broke it because of a strong mental will.

Wizard's abilty to make spells of anything


Other ways players do this is when one takes control of another person's character and forces an action upon them.

EX: Magma kicking Juggernaut and writing that he went tumbling though Jugg was not the rpers character.


So remember, no godmodding in rps!

This is one of those things that have to do as much with the integrity of the rpers as it does with the integrity of the story.

For the sake of dramtic irony and overall quality there will be lots of instances where players will make a post about knowlege that is restricted to a few characters but every player will know.

Fantomex's deception, Gambit's allegiance with Sinister, and some character weaknesses.

But just because every player knows doesn't mean our characters should know.

Metagaming would mean a player lets their character "guess" others secrets or other forms of knowledge when they would not normally know that.


It hasn't been a huge problem yet, but fear of it has limited some players so far.

Ok, the big thing that will have to come into the rp at some point is the concept of LOSING.

If toad is facing a mutant army of the X-Men, Brotherhood and Avengers then he's going to LOSE.

Coming up with some contrived scheme so that he ends up winning is no fun for anyone involved.

The most recent slowdown for the thread happened because razor's character was tricked into an action which was a valid move because the poster who tricked him did not impose her will on the character.

Instead of acknowledging he had been beaten and used Razor had his character "undo" everything that had just happened which makes for a totally uninteresting story but also isn't fair to the poster who came up with an executed a great plan.


"Be a good loser" and we'll have a better story.

I don't think this will be so much of an issue now since we're seeing more and more canon X-Men and everyone is doing pretty well with the current cast of originals but the big thing to remember is if we're rping students then we should intentionally make them fight or act appropriate to their level.
