Another world according to Jagged

Like many historical films you do have to take a creative license because something you just don't know but have to be there for things to take place.

So here are two troop types. They are general terms but with so many different cultures being used in the game some common terms are necessary to identify what is being dealt with in the RPG.

Men-at-Arms

A term I find mostly in medieval text but it is very useful for the rpg. A Man-at-Arms is a warrior of great skill and prowess on the battle field. A master of many weapons of his own culture as well as enemy and ally. Often speaks more then two languages and is stronger then fast then the rest of his unit. He is the NCO who has been with every army over the centuries in one form or another. He is a natural leader and keeps the troops together and even after the death of the officer this individual can often keep things together or at least insure the unit survives the fight. In peace time he keeps order and sees the training is maintained.

To create a Sergeant you need a veteran soldier who is highly skilled in the type of unit he is being sighed (best swordsmen in his unit of swordsmen). Next he is given better gear and trained in the art of leadership. Many times you will have veterans in your villages long before you begin you campaign so it is up to you to seek them out and train them.

An alternative way to use this class is form whole units of these elite warriors. With better gear and training they can turn the tide of battle and put fear in the hearts of men. They are battle hardened warriors that won't run and are of great loyalty. They are the killer elite infantry.

The knight

The elite mounted warrior of noble birth. Like the Men-at-Arms this soldier is the leader in battle but this time is the cavalry elite. A master of over 20 weapons and of horsemenship. They are the partian class that fights. Unlike the Men-at-Arms who will gladly take an increase in pay The knight will want large soils like land and treasure. These armored fighters are loyal to you and often have ties to religious institutions in your community. They are professional soldiers though and sometimes wish to go off on quests or fight for gold or land for other leaders in time of peace as they continue their search for glory.

A whole unit of knights from many noble families is very expensive to maintian and keep together, but is a powerful force on the battle field. As I said above this troop type more then others is adventurer class. They travel where there is work and glory. So while at war you may find more then a few come to join your banner, but in the dull winter months or a peaceful summer they may be off to the next "hotspot" for battle.

Another plus side to these warriors is as they gather wealth they will build "strongholds" where they will produce food, weapons, and even troops and other knights.

What I have written here is a guideline for players to create troops to help them in battle. Often cultures have their own but this gives us some common ground. Also the guidelines help in creating troops like cavalry for cultures like the Aztecs who never developed that type of troops. Well I hope this helps and please give me feedback and ideas.

HA HA

**splat** Jagged's snowball attack hits Tonofnoise a couple of times both in the face and body. ***ANGER FACE : 0 ***

With the thrill of snowballing on his mind

pulls two of his finest snowballs; Firm, well rounded, and the perfect throwing weight.

**moves silent and with the skill of a snowball sniper waits for Jagged to shot his face again.
****splat **** Jagged resurfaces to take pride in his last him and gets snowballed and knocked off his little legs.

ONE MORE FOR WHOM EVER WANTS TO TAKE ON THE BEAST FROM THE EAST

Just some thoughts, but as always, it's your world boss. I'm just a squirrel looking for a nut.

The man-at-arms was historically a roaming mercenary, swearing no real alliance to amy. Are there going to me roaming solgers for hire as well?

As for knights, the civilizations are all a bit early historically for mounted, armored knights as per the medeval times isn't it?

Oh yeah...

**splat attacks Tonofnoise**

Take THAT you...um, ... you YOU!

All troop times and cultures willbe roaming about in the game. You may find yourself with Samurai and Mayan mercenaries at one point.......they are part of the fun of my world.

Knights.......are just mounted elite cavalry as far as this world. They are not the medieval knights though the Romans did have knights.

That is all I am talking about...and your all able to develop things once the knowledge is in place.

*drinking coco recovering from the snow ball fight....*

Historical......kinda

If their are any inaccuracies let me know, but know also that I am trying to keep things balanced and let's face it some cultures over time at different periods have had better things then another....For centuries Poland produced great cavalry while the best Russian cavalry was Cossacks (nonRussians.)

Some tribes in groups in my word have developed and appeared differently then they may have in the past. All I can say is rest assured there is some historical basic for their existance, and that I try to be fair so nobody is to many steps away from someone else.

METALS

HEY I'M TRYING TO GET ALL MY MEDEVIL METAL DOWN IN PROPER ORDER.

COPPER, BRONZE, ZINC, AND IRON?? I THINK THESE WERE ALL THE RAW METALS NOT LIKE STEEL WHICH IS A MIX OF METALS.

ALSO ANYONE KNOW WHICH TYPES OF WOODS WHERE MOST COMMONLY USED FOR WEAPONS.

OAK, PINE, HICKORY, OR BIRCH.

I recall bronz to iron........Iron and bronz are of the same strength but iron is easier to work with and I believe cheaper on the ancient market place.

Just a side point, bronze isnt a raw material. It's an alloy made up from the base metal of copper and adding various other metals, Zinc Tin and Lead, amongst others.

http://www.americanbronze.com/WhatsBronze.htm

I don't personally believe the way it was discovered was as described here as there is no way a campfire could get anywhere near hot enough to melt copper, let alone somehow mix several metals together. I mean, if the campfire gets hot enough to melt the rocks, why would you make a circle of them around you campfire and if it did get hot enough, the people sleeping around the fire would have been incinerated from the heat!
Steel is an alloy made from iron ore and zinc but it also requires coke in the manufacturing process to get it hot enough as coal doesnt burn hot enough due to it's impurities.

Anyway, that's just my two cents worth....

Duely noted

But from a historical view point what was the evalution of metal and weapons. Thats what I'm trying to find out. Which metals were used first to the most common metals for fashioning weapons. IE bone, rock, wood, copper, iron, bronze, than steel?

well, I believe that we were created and didn't evolve from some improbable primordial soup (I'm probably opening a can of worms here) and thus I believe in the bible as a true record of what happened, Therefore, I know that man did not 'discover' metals but the knowledge was simply given to him.
I also know that those of ancient history were much more technologically advanced than we give them credit for. The 'ark' found on Mt Ararat has metal rods that were used for riveting the main beams together. The metal is of a very sophisticated alloy; iron, copper, aluminium and even titanium.
The bible in the Genesis account mentions a man named Tubalcain who was a teacher of metalurgy. I cannot see how some people sitting around a campfire would suddenly decide to throw rocks into a fire to see what happened when they melted. As I mentioned before the fire simply wouldnt get hot enough anyway. They would have had to build a furnace.

I am aware that there were different types of metals used for the construction of weapons throught the ages, but there are many different factors that people simply don't think of or choose to ignore. Such as cave men were not apelike ancestors. When somone was deformed or was slightly odd in their appearance in times past, they were more often than not banished from civilization to scratch out an existance among the hills and mountains. When forced to live in caves for shelter and use whatever tools come to hand, one becomes a 'cave man', using sharp, pointed rocks for a knife, and large flat rocks for an axe.. Their physical appearance making discoverers believe that they are of a new race, a missing link if you will, whe all they were was an unfortunate individual who was forced to flee from an unforgiving and uncaring people.
So to answer, There is a certain order I suppose to metals used, but it seems to come and go, to surge and abate with time.

Just a side point, bronze isnt a raw material. It's an alloy made up from the base metal of copper and adding various other metals, Zinc Tin and Lead, amongst others.

Bronze also had the advantage in that is was much more resistant to corosion than iron or steel.
