I've always been told that if someone's shouting, it's usually because they feel like they're not being heard. On one level they may think that they now stand a chance of making their point (rarely works). Mostly, though, it's just a way to relieve the extrodinary frustration of feeling like "they" aren't listening.

I have to say I've seen MUCH MUCH nastier discussions about politics elsewhere, here I think you've got a core group that like each other regardless of political affiliation, and it works as a buffer to keep things somewhat civil. I think the phenomenon that may be bugging you, LDW, is actually the end product of stuff that never happened here. The topic can't come up anymore without people starting off frustrated from the last time they were banging their head against a particular wall.

But you're right, insofar as when we feel we have all the answers we stop listening to the other side. I haven't got cred here, so I'm trying to keep my head down. Not always successfully, but never mind. I do think, though, that the day you decide the folks who disagree with you haven't got a point, you stop learning. And then you may as well bow out of the coversations...cause there isn't anything left but the slogans.

Personally, I think my conservative friends do have many points. I certainly don't think they're bad people..and I think name calling is counterproductive, whichever side it comes from. And sometimes, just being willing to admit that is enough to relieve enough of the frustration that real communication can happen.

The 'debates' do sometimes veer into rants...but i'd rather have that than no discussion whatsoever about issues that matter.
