Guys I just tried to explain the difference between a small business and a company, tax wise to Jen. She thinks that the stock market is socialism and I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. Like she literally thinks that capitalism is socialism as if she got the vocabulary words wrong on a test. So it's not actually that she dislikes socialism. She actually hates capitalism. That explains a whole, whole lot. To me, at least.

Years ago I took care of a person who had to take lithium every day to remain on an even keel. For some reason your post reminded me of him. Jen's persona here is exactly like he was when he'd stop taking his lithium. Completely irrational, out of touch with reality and no concept of how illogical he was being. It was a good thing he was also blind, so he couldn't see the dumfounded looks I'd give him, it would have flipped him out even more.

On the flip side, when he was on his meds he was a really nice guy and we got along fine. We had very different political views but could have intelligent discussions about stuff.

There is no easy answer to that question...and as a conservative I can admit that.

No one is going to want to hear this, but it doesn't make it any less true, the problem with healthcare in this country started with the advent of medicare, and medicaid. When I was a kid, we'd pay out of pocket for our routine medical care, and insurance was for catastrophic illnesses only. It worked reasonably well, and just as insurance was supposed to work by spreading the risk across multiple people. Yes, some people got left out in that system, the poor who truly couldn't afford the Doctor's visits, or the people with some pre-existing condition that kept them from being able to afford the insurance plans that were available. I don't know if charity worked well enough to meet all those needs, but it is what it was. There are way too many reasons to list here, but all government healthcare schemes work as policy but fail in practice because it needs more people at the bottom of the pyramid to pay for the folks at the top, when their healthcare needs are the greatest. As costs rise, it becomes unsustainable. I understand the compassion, and even agree with it up to a point, but at the end of the day, paying for it is going to be impossible. The ACA exacerbates that problem. I personally don't have a solution, but I know the road we are on now ends in failure, as all pyramid schemes do.

Our political discourse in this country as sunk to a low point when right and left see everything in blue and red. We become so entrenched in our belief system, that we miss the good faith that the other side approaches the question with.

It is what allows Nancy Pelosi to make the statement "We have to pass it for you to find out what's in it" No American should stand for that from their elected leaders, it's outrageous, and the biggest reason we reel from one crisis to the next. Allowing the President to say he doesn't know about policies being implemented by his own administration is laughable at best, and treasonous at worse. Not to give the republicans a pass, they shut down the government when they don't get their way so they can go home and campaign on the fact that atl least they tried.

For the most part all of the people in Washington are acting in their own self interest, and lining their pockets on the backs of the American middle class. The politically connected petition the government for favored legislation or regulation, and in turn contribute to the right and the left political campaigns, to keep them in power while the real problems facing this country continue to get passed over with lip service, and the media sycophants cheer for their favorite side, and give them all a pass, while Rome continues to burn.
